i just bought anew macbook pro with mountain lion and the iPhoto was not installed...when i go to the ap store to purhase it says that it has already been purchased using another's apple id...this was an open box purchase with best buy...how do i get iphoto and apeture?

So I just bought my MacBook and it was discounted as an "Open Box" which meant that someone had bought the computer and shortly (less than a week) decided that they did not want it. So because the person would have begun setting up the computer and using the computer's serial number to download Apps they would then cost money for peoplel like me who purchase them. This person did not purchase GarageBand because I got it for free, but iMovie and iPhoto both are $14.99. The salesman told me that I could use Apple's Up-To-Date program to get these Apps, however, when I tried to I am only able to get iWork and not iLife. How can I get iMovie and iPhoto without having to pay for them? I also have just updated the computer just incase that was not allowing me to get iMovie and iPhoto but that was not the problem.

Verizon offers an email service for non-smartphones called Mobile Email. According to this Gizmodo article (link is below), it apparently was initially compatible with only certain of the non-smartphone models available at that time.

Getting iLife on a open box mac.

I have a family member that just bought an open box comuter at a retailer and is unable to download iLife. I've read that it could have been registered by the previous owner yet when the product was returned the liscense stayed with him even though he doesn't own the product anymore. So the new owner my family member is down iLife and is unable to download it when it should come with just as the OS did. I've heard of Apple warranty reset request forms yet I not been able to find one anywhere in these forums or even mentioned. Does apple have a solution for this? Will there ever be solution for this?

You still don't comprehend so you are banned from this chat for life. When I bought my mac mini it came with iLife '11 that I got for free I didn't have to for pay it. I linked it to my Apple ID & was able to use it on my other macs since I now own it now for life. So if you buy a new and mac register it you get iLife linked to Apple ID for free no extra charge, zero. Now if you then return that mac to the apple store or what ever other retailer you bought it from you still get to keep the iLife, which I think isn't fair. There are pros and cons to the app store this is one of the cons, being able you use your apps an all your macs if you own more than one pro, I think I read somewhere up to 5. Micheal I also read some of your other posts & it seems I'm the only person you have offended. Your you have such a high level of experience yet no profesionalism, I don't know if it's your ego but your rude. I came to this forum for help not to have my intelligence insulted.
So I tried the other good recommendations. I have already wiped the partitions and restored the mac using both internet recovery and a Lion bootable USB I created back when I bought Lion but still no iLife. I had them call 1-800-APL-CARE and they said they couldn't do anything even if that apple was now registered to them, apparently once an apple product is registered for the first time and if that wasn't you, you will not get much help from the 1-800-APL-CARE number, I've also read that using your warranty is nightmare unless you fill out an "Apple Warranty Reset Request Form" that you can only find in the Apple store since I've had no luck finding it on their site or any mention of it on these forums. I had them sign out of their Apple ID and re-sign in and still no iLife.
So as of right now it seems that the only answer is to go to an Apple store to have them reload iLife or have the retailer issue out an App Store card for purchasing iLife. I never new that buying a used Apple product was such a nightmare.

Yes. There is no Superdrive. You cannot play DVDs or CDs.
You will need to buy an external DVD player/burner. Almost all will do the job, just make sure you can connect it, as your iMac does not have Firewire or USB2 (USB3 is backwards compatible).
Or there is of course the expensive one from Apple.

Migrated from old Mac to new Mac with Lion, iPhoto 6 still here, can't update

Hi, I just migrated from an old MacBook to a brand new MacBook Pro. The Apple Store did the migration for me. For some strange reason, iPhoto 6 is present on this Mac, even though it should have come with iPhoto '11. I understand that I should be able to install iPhoto '11 from the App Store, since this Mac is entitled to it, but it only shows up as a $15 purcahse instead.
Does anyone know how to get the App Store to recognise that this Mac shipped with, and is entitled to, iPhoto '1?

First, get rid of any old copy of iPhoto you have on the new computer. Log into the App Store using your Apple ID. Click on Purchases icon. At the top you should find the three iLife apps with an Accept button to click on. Then you can download iPhoto without having to pay for it.

Keynote file will not open on Mac with older version.

I write presentations at home (Mac OSX 10.9.4 with Keynote 5.3 (1170) - iMac Desktop
and I play them at my retail store (Mac OSX 10.4.11 with Keynote 5.03 (791) - MacMini
I must have automatically let the computer at home upgrade Keynote and now the file I have spent hours on will not open at work. <banging head on desk>.
The error I get is "unable to open because this is not a valid keynote document".
My Mac Mini says everything is up to date so I don't believe I can update anymore. I do believe i have an iWork disc somewhere and I guess I could try and go BACK on my iMac, but I am not even sure how to do that without goofing up my entire computer.
Ideas?

Unless you have manually deleted Keynote 5, it is retained in the Applications folder in iWorks 09 folder.
If it is no longer installed, use the install discs to re-install and follow the onscreen instructions.

SQL file does not open in Mac with SQL Developer

Hi,
I have my .sql extension files in mac associated with SQL Developer, but when I open the file SQL Developer does not start; nothing happens.
I checked all the associations and it seems correct.
Any suggestion?

Hi Mike,
I can provide solution if you can tell me the registry value(HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\sqlwb.sql.9.0\Shell\Open\Command). I believe there is an extra %1 which is causing this.

RDP file won't open on Mac with double click

Hi
We have sort of created our own RDP Gateway and this used to work fine on Mac's double click the RDP file and this automatically opened Microsoft Desktop App and you could login in once entering username and password. Since the last couple of updates to
RDP App it doesn't work when double clicking the RDP downloaded file, it works if I import it into the RDP App and start it but not when I double click it.
This is obviously causing an issue with quite a few users and causing our number of support calls to increase dramatically.

I have Adobe Reader 10.1.3 for Mac, (10.7.3) and am having problems opening pdfs. I get an error message: Adobe Reader could not open file name.pdf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). The files are not from emails, but are from websites, government sites, professional organizations etc.) Help! Adobe is no help!

Manually download the files to your computer (right-click on the url). When the file is downloaded to your computer do you get the same message when you try to open in Reader through the File->Open menu? What about when you open the file in Mac's Preview application?

Need suggestions for new router running mac with eyeconnect,and ps3

We have the latest version of leopard on our 24" imac and we have eyeconnect ver. 1.6 we need to buy a new router and i want one that is very easy(like plug it in and walk away)to use. The main priority for this is not having problems streaming media to our ps3 via eyeconnect or medialink. Wireless or wired whatever would be the best i have never actually had an airport only linksys and have been unhappy with most of them any advice welcome about the router or getting eyeconnect to be recognized by the ps3 once its hooked up. What I have in my house is an Airport Extreme with it's two (n,b or g) wireless connections for older non-N wireless connections. I then got a D-Link DGS-2208 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Desktop Green Ethernet Switch 8 for fast subnet sharing in the house. This speed is important for HD video sharing for from the external I have connected to the USB2 port on My Extreme.
Note: My Extreme is in "Bridged mode" because it sits behind a wired router that acts as the DHCP server.
Getting a router with Gig Ports and and USB2 port for an external to store/share files (videos mainly) to all my networked devices. The USB2 port on the Extreme was the deciding factor for the extra cost and this handy port making any USB2 external into a networked drive. Plus my older iPhone 3GS only does G it was a no-brainier because of the dual wireless.
The GIG switch is future proofing yourself for the years to come.
Plus I called the extreme but it is a Time Capsule that is just and extreme with a built-in disk.
One more thing: Use CAT6 cables in your network.

2010 open box or 2011?

I can get an open box 2010, with 320 gig HD for $505, or the new 2011 with 500 gig HD for $569. Which is preferable, and why?

There are cases here and there about people having problems UPGRADING to Lion, but I've yet to see a problem with the 2011 mini that comes with Lion pre-installed. I picked one up right after it released, and it's been humming along quite nicely.
I too, would choose the 2011 over the 2010 for the reasons vazandrew listed. The CPU is probably the biggest deal, since it's now a Sandy Bridge. Not to mention the addition of the Thunderbolt port for future compatibility. $65 is $65, but in the grand scheme of things it's a small difference in price for what I would consider a big jump in performance.

E mail. I can not send email to a contact from my list. When I hit their email address, the new message box comes up but the send icon is not highlighted and I can not send it. Why? How do I fix it. Happens on both I pad Air 2 and I Phone 5

Hey I had the same situation, albiet it took longer to reach that understanding!I've been a Best Buy customer for some time now and have always loved the open box discounts and GSP. Apparently, what was told to me (that the battery and charger is covered) when I bought my openbox laptop and GSP is completely false! Me only finding this out after bringing my charger to the Cambridge, MA store, being told that despite having the charger I needed my laptop serial number which I'm supposed to know by memory? Then being told I should call the parts store when I got home, then the representative told me that my GSP does not cover the charger and I should contact Apple, as I made my purchase in August of last year. Now apparently Apple does not have on record that the purchase was not made in August (when I purchased the laptop) but in June (when the original purchase was made) could someone at Best Buy please rectify this? Get me my Apple one year warrnty coverage? Thank you!

It is discouraging though to hear that you may have been provided some misinformation regarding our Geek Squad Protection plans. I’m sorry it seems that you’ve had trouble with your charger or battery. I'm sure that encountering more trouble with receiving service through us and Apple due to the different purchase dates would be even more irritating.
Using the information you registered with the forum, I was able to locate the purchase of this MacBook Pro. You should be able to receive service through us either under your manufacturer warranty or your Geek Squad Protection plan. Furthermore, per the Geek Squad Protection plan terms and conditions, your battery should be covered. Although your charger would be excluded from coverage under this plan, it may be covered by your manufacturer warranty.
With that said, do you seem to be having trouble with your charger or your battery, or are you unsure? I would be delighted to assist you in looking into what options you have!

I just purchased a new Mac OS x 10.9.1.
I'm trying to move over files from Passport which was my backup for my old Mac. Not all my photos transported over. I'm missing about 3 years worth. I followed the instructions for the iphoto 11 upgrader for the library, download, utility etc. But no go.
Now Iphoto -- the app -- wont open at all without thisk pop up:
To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.

But
Then you do not have an iPhoto library - it is not possible to move "some" of an iPhoto library - it is a single entity and must be treates as such
Exactly how step by step did you do this?
I was able to move virtually all my photos and "events" prior to 2010.
I did create a copy of my old iPhoto library from the Passport drive on the desktop but that to gives me the "to open..."message when I tried to open it.
So run the library upgrader (applications folder ==> utilities) against tha tlibrary and then open it using iPhoto 9.5.x
