Hi, I have a similar problem, my son erased my wife's game data for pet rescue. We left the phone in Apple for repair last week and now we got it back but it is fully restored from a previous iCloud backup which did not include the game save.
I have an iTunes backup of the phone which was made just before deleting the pet score game score and therefore which should contain it. I don't want to restore the iPhone from that iTunes backup. Is there a way to just bring the game save data separately?

Backing up does not restore anything, it simply makes a backup of the content on the device.
I suspect you intended that you synced the device as this would put contacts and media from iTunes back on the device.

I have just started using game center on my iPad 2. I had previously been playing Temple Run on my iPhone, once I had logged in on both devices my achievements from my phone transferred to my iPad but not the points I had accumulated for power ups etc in the store.
If the only way to transfer game progress is to restore from a back up how come my achievements have synced across? Isn't there a way to sync store points across as well?

You can find the backup files and then copy them to a safe place if you are worrying about this.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then press Return.

Regarding not being able to open iPhoto. As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Were you able to create a new library?
If so then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. It has a Wi-Fi connection
It is connected to a power source
The screen is off
5GB is plenty of storage for me to backup to iCloud automatically.
I have a 64GB iPhone & a 128GB iPad both backing up to the same iCloud account and I still have nearly 2GB free.
This is mainly because media is not backed up and Photo Stream & iTunes purchases do not count against your iCloud storage.
