Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.) -
I am wanting to have my music available to me, but not actually on the new laptop (like my iPhone is set up to do). I suppose I am wanting to know if I can transfer, or authorize my new laptop to have all of my music in iCloud, but not actually in iTunes on the laptop? You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before. -

i tried transferring my iphoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook pro (via external hard drive), but when i open the new iphoto, it seems to have transferred ALL images ever used on my old macbook. so i tried to just delete all those images so i could try a different approach to transferring, but the new iphoto won't let me do anything and every time i try to delete anything it crashes (since the image amount is so high). please help!!

How can I get my music off my old ipod onto my new iphone?
I just got a new computer and have an ipod from a long time ago. I would like to get the music off the ipod and onto my computer and then put it onto my new iphone. I already have the cables and have installed iTunes but I don't know what to do. I'm afraid if I tell it to "sync" it will erase all the music already on my ipod because there's no music in my iTunes library currently.

Thanks for the response. Do you have more specified instructions to which you can direct me? This sounds "too easy." I had a problem once before consolidating libraries (when moving the music from my hard drive to an external hard drive on my old computer). I missed one small step and it was a nightmare!

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. Last link in the table to the iLounge article is probably all you really need for older iPods, though you'll need to use the iTunes transfer purchases command to retrieve any ClickWheel Games. Once everything is in your library you can add it to the iPhone.

Just got an iPhone 5, and learned that the 100 or more CDs that I had uploaded to iTunes on my older Mac cannot be downloaded to my new phone using iCloud/iMatch. I match is not compatible with the older operating systems. I spoke to a Apple genius, and he said that there is software out there that will do the job. Is anyone familiar with any of these? Frustrated, and need help.
I regret to say that you need a new computer. That G5, as good as it still is, simply cannot run the required software to be used with the latest iPhones and other software.

Try resetting your iPhone. Hold the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
On a separate point, you may wish to consider updating your iPhone if you're still on iOS 5.0.1 as your post says.
