I just got a new iMac and am trying to transfer iTunes library from old PC (barely running) to new iMac. I tried through Home Sharing but couldn't find how to sync. Is it necessary to get Firewire? Or should I sync it from my iPad? I'd like to avoid the middleman. Thanks!

I'm having some trouble moving my iTunes library from my old Windows XP Dell to my new MacBook Pro. I used my iPod video on the Dell, but now that I have a Mac, I want all my songs to be moved over there. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do this. I looked at the Apple Support pages, but none of them address this particular issue. Can someone guide me on how to do transfer my library?

the ipod now showing up in my computer or wherever is probably because the ipod is not set for disk use. go to the ipod settings in itunes and fink the check box where it says "enable disk use" this should make the ipod show up. now you should be able to put the songs onto the ipod as a music file to transfer them. other methods of transfer could be an external hard drive, a travel drive, a usb cable, or the most convenient but frustrating way is to open the ipod folder in my computer... and nvm i cant remember how to do it and dont have a working ipod at the moment to find out. ill post that solution later. i will say it involves opening the folder where the music is saved on the ipod, copying them onto the computer and renaming every single file. this is convienient only because it doesnt require modification or movement of any songs to the ipod because it uses the ones on there. all the files renamed with random letters and numbers when put on the ipod so youll have to reorganize all songs

The left hand pane is the source pane. Were both Macs running the same version of iPHoto?
Try rebuilding the library with the option to Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.

It will take a little time and patience so read through the steps first. Remember - Turn off auto sync in iTunes on the Mac, then transfer purchases and then backup your iPad before you sync with iTunes.

But I have since established my own Apple ID in an attempt to organize my music and downloaded a few things there. Since puchasing a new apple desktop and having our files transferred, I would really like to "copy" or "share", not sure what the right term would be, all of the music under the original id to my own and keep things separate from here on out. But how do I get, or bring up, all the old music in my new(er) apple id?

Music from your cds in not "under" and Apple id at all.
Put all of the music in your itunes library. that simple.
Music is not in an id. it is on a computer. Put it wherever you like.

This is the method I would normally recommend:
Backup with this User Tip, restore the library to the new computer using the same tool, keep the backup up-to-date in future. Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer need to access protected content on it.
You can use your iPod classic to move your library to a new computer but if you don't already have a backup copy of the library (and your other important data) now is the time to think about it.

I've tried copying the entire itunes folder from my pc and copied it on the Mac. it synced and i didn't lose my information luckily, but i can't listen to any of the music on the Mac. i get an error "The song “ ” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
any suggestions on this would be great. obviously i missed something here. The new Mac is authorized so i've done that. all the music still plays on the iphone as well, which is good.
