HT4946 will updating on a new computer delete my contacts?

will itunes delete my contacts if i update my iphone on a new computer? (windows7)

Possibly.
However, relying on a single device for storage of data like contacts, calendars, media, etc is not very intelligent.
The iPhone and all iDevices are designed to sync contacts and calendars with a supported application on the computer, a cloud service or and Exchange server.  If the device is being as used, there is no concern with loss of data.

will syncning my iphone with a new computer erase my contacts ?

Probably.  You can use software such as PhoneView (mac) or Touchcopy (windows) to copy them to from your phone before you do. This must be done before you sync, however, or you contacts will be wiped.

  • HT4972 I replaced the computer I originally used to synch my iPhone. I get the message stating that my content will be erased, even though this is the computer I now synch with. Is there a way to make the update recognize the new computer?

I replaced the computer I originally used to synch my iPhone. When trying to update to iOS5.0, I get the message stating that my content will be erased, even though this is the computer I now synch my phone with. Is there a way to make the update recognize the new computer so that my content will be kept?

The best option is to copy your entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one using one of the methods described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527.  This will allow iTunes on your new computer to recognize and sync with your phone without deleting content.  You will also need to copy over any other synced data not in your iTunes library such as photos synced to your phone, calendars and contacts.
If you can't do this, these articles will help you start syncing with your new computer with minimal or no data loss:

  • I have new computer, want to update itunes on new computer?

I want to update itunes on new computer with my old iPod nano version 4.  How can I do this?

If you already have iTunes on your computer, then open it up.
Go to the menubar at the top of the screen, and select "Advanced"
In there, you will see the option "Check for Updates". Select that.

You can install new machines as needed.  Your subscription allows for functioning installations on two machines, so you could keep the original installation as a backup if you could use one.  Otherwise, you can sign out of the old machine to discontinue the use of it there.  You will install on the new machine just like you do for the current one.

Will updating to this new os affect my phone being unlocked?

If officially unlocked, no. You have nothing to worry about. If hacked to unlock it, worry...as your phone will be re-locked to the carrier it was originally locked to, that is if the update  even succeeds.

I want to update my iPod touch to iOS 4 on my newer computer, but a message came up saying "Updating to iOS 4.2 will delete all media, including iTunes store purchases. To preserve your media, apply this update on the computer where you sync music, videos and photos. Updating on this computer will only preserve apps, contacts, calendars, messages and other settings"
I need to make this new computer the main and official one that I sync on because soon enough the old computer is going to get chucked out. Please can someone tell me how to do this?

  • IPod will not sync to newer computer

    Friends,
I have a perplexing problem. I am moving my computers around. I always move the faster one up to the office while the older one goes to another room. Currently I have the iPod synced to a MAC 450 GHz G4 computer. I wanted to move the iTunes and sync to my faster computer. ...I have a G4 dual 1GHz MDD. I inserted my pod into the dock and it requested that I sync to the iTunes new computer. This required that the iPod be erased. I have already moved the library to the new G4 1GHz via DVD discs as per the instructions for moving to a new computer. However, within about 4 minutes as it was writing the tunes to the ipod, a dialogue box popped up and said " Attempting to copy to the disk "my name" iPod failed. The Disk could not be read from or written to." I checked the iPod drive via disc utilities. Everything is fine. The iPod mounts with no problem. I even purchased music that the library disc is on ( I keep a separate drive for the library) every thing is good. I updated my OS (10.4.11 and the iTunes is 7.6.1 (9) For some odd reason my 1 Ghz MAC will not sync to the iPod. I then tried the ipod on the old G4 450 GHz and it re syncd...... no problem. Any suggestions ??? Trouble is .. in order to test it ..... you gotta see if it will write all your tunes.. I really want my 1 GHz to be the main "sync" one.
Second problem, but not as serious... every time I insert my pod into the dock, BOTH MACs tell me that I should use 2.0 USB and connect the dock to the back of the computer. IT is connected to the back of the computer!!!!!
    Mike

Did you download the ne iTunes?(i think its 11)
If that's the case then you need to go to "music" and select that you want to sync your music.
    Hope that helps.

  • Need to download/update iPhone to new computer.

My old iMac has a full disk. I bought second, used iMac, also running 10.5.8, which I want to use to upgrade
my iPhone 4. I saved all apps and purchased iTunes to the newer computer, but when I tried to download & upgrade
I am getting the message that I will lose all the apps and purchases if I upgrade with the new computer. I can't run
the upgrade from the old computer because there is no memory left. How do I get the new computer to download & upgrade without losing everything?

Are you running iTunes 10.6.3 or later?  If not, update iTunes.

  • Advice for moving to, and updating Aperture on, new computer?

I am moving to a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display, from a 6-year-old MacBook Pro. I'm looking for tips to make the transition smoother.
I will be upgrading to the newest version of Aperture. I currently have Aperture 3.4.5. Everything is all on my laptop. The Aperture file is 938 MB, and is SLOW! It's barely usable as it is.
I will be using TimeCapsule to transfer files. My current OS is 10.7.5.
Should I update Aperture before I move it? Should I move it, and then update it? Should I (somehow!) "disconnect" the files from the program and then reconnect them after they are transferred?
I'd like to make this transition as painless as possible!
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

    1. You can't update Aperture past 3.4.5 from 10.8.5 or earlier. You need to move it and then perform the update.
    2. See #1.
    3. No. Just keep a backup of them.
    4. If you got Aperture from a DVD and the new computer's running Yosemite, you'll probably need to contact Apple to perform the update.

  • Update iTouch with new computer?

I have a new computer (Mac Mini).  When I connect my iTouch and update for the first time will I loose all my ebooks and other information?

Yes if you do nothing beforehand. Move/copy your entire iTunes library to your new computer. Also move/copy the iPod backup file.  After the stuff in on the computer, restore the iPod from the backup you just moved/copied.
    The backup file is here:
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP,  Windows Vista and Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.
If you are moving from a Mac to a Mac, use the Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder under Applications.

  • New computer: delete duplicates completely and transfer my playlists

I have a new computer.  I transferred music from backup...didn't see it...transferred again.  So now I have duplicates.  I deleted some of them, but they still showed up grayed out.  I tried deleting everything so I could start from scratch, but that didn't work.  They were still just grayed out.   How do I make them go away completely so I have a clean slate????
Also, when they transferred, I had no playlists.  Is there some way to transfer them into my computer library from my ipod?  Or is there some way to copy them from my old computer to my new one?
Any and all help will be appreciated!
    Edana

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)
