I really want/ need to update my ipod touch to ios 5. I dont want to loose all of my media, apps etc. Is there a possible way of doing this? Ive heard about backing up your things but im unsure as to how to do it. Any help would be much appriciated.

As long as you do the update on the computer you use for syncing and all thesynced media (apps, music, video etc) ore in you iTunes libray or computer (for synced photos), you should be OK. Howevery, things do happen so you should have a backup of your iTunes library somewhere..

Sanmannyer, just what are you smoking? iTunes can sync non-iTunes purchased music to any iPod and iOS devices (iPod touch, iPhone and iPad) as long as it is not DRM protected.
Would y plase stop posting incorrect information.

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article. As it's running an iOS version prior to 5.0, there won't be an option to update from the device itself.

I had a PC that crashed and recently bought a MacBook to replace it. When I tried to import the music from my iPod to my MacBook I got the error message that iPods can only be synced to one computer at a time and I was then given two options: either erase the data currently on my iPod and allow it to sync to the new computer or transfer previous purchases. I cicked transfer previous purchases but not all of my music transferred. How can I get ALL of my music on my iPod to transfer to my MacBook??

Welcome to the discussion,
Create a new user in windows to keep your iTunes library separate and log in. Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

there nothing about syncing music? show the memu bar. The menu bar includes Help.

Just do the update on your syncing computer. All the items should be in your iTunes library or, for synced photos, on the computer. The items will be synced back to the iPod during a latter stage of the update.
