5.1.1 is the highest for the first generation iPad.

HT4972 can a 3GS iphone be updated with iOS 4 or iOS 5 software?
I have a 3GS phone and would like to know if It can be updated with ios 4 or ios 5 software.
Thanks!Yes, the iPhone 3GS can be updated to the current software iOS 6.1.4.
UPDATE - It might be 6.1.3 ... I don't remember. But anyway, you either update all the way or not at all. -
Music collection lost on iPad third generation after updating to iOS 8.1.1
I updated my third generation iPad to iOS 8.1.1 recently. This deleted my entire music collection from the iPad except for the songs i had purchased on iTunes. I had over 16 GB of music & i use manually manage music feature. I have never changed the Manually Manage setting.
iTunes on the iMac still shows all the music listed with 16 GB used for audio but the iPad is empty. I tried syncing the iPad several times but the music is never copied to the iPad.
This was a precious music collection! How do i get it back without manually selecting and copying songs from the iMac?
I believe that it can be done somehow as the iTunes is still listing all of the music. So i lose my old collection while doing that!
its 16 GB of highly selected music.. will take for ever to make a similar selected collection all over again!
I have never directly synced to a playlist or my library... i have always used the manually manage feature. -

Can I update my iPad first generation to ios 6?
iOS 6-- can I update my iPad (first generation) with it? It appears I cannot, but I want to make sure.
No, unfortunately not the 1st gen iPads... The new iOS 6 will run on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5; the iPad 2 and third-generation iPad; and the fourth- and fifth-generation iPod touch.
Hope this answers your question.

Why can I not update my iPad first generation to the latest software?
Why can I not update my iPad first generation to the latest software?
Which version of iOS is supported is a decision made by each
individual software developer. If there is an app that is not available
in iOS 5, contact the developer to see if they can provide a version
compatible with your iOS.
Perhaps one of these links may help:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Vintapps 3.1.3 - paid app.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version. -

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

I can't find app for iPad first generation! Why ?
I Had an iPad first generation and I can't find app under iOS 5.......why And sometime m'y IPad close alone.
Apple requirements now ask to make them for iOS 7 and above. iPad 1 has become outdated and there are barely, if any, apps available for this device.
If your iPad restarts on it's own, try restoring to factory settings.

Can the first generation iPad handle iOS 5
I know with Mac computers after awhile the models cannot support the newest OS. Is this the same with iPads yet and if so can the first generation iPad handle iOS 5?
as an owner of a first gen iPad running iOS 5.1, I can tell you with absolute certainty, that the first gen iPad is completely capable of running iOS 5. I have been running iOS 5 since the day it was released with no problems.

I have an Ipad first generation with IOS 5.1.1. and I have just got a new ipad mini. Should I use the back up copy of the old Ipad from Itunes to configure the new one, or it is better to configure the new one from scratch?
Contrary to the opinion above, I see no reason whatsoever why you can't set up the new iPad from the backup of the old one. Obviously you will have app updates to make and complete and that sort of thing, but if you want to retain all of your app data and device settings (some of which will change because of the updated iOS), I would certainly restore from the backup first.
If you find that to be problematic, you can always start all over again. -
Ipad first generation or ipod touch 4g or 5g?iIhave already had a 4g and broke it and thrown it away. I wouldy really love to use a ipad but im not sure. By the way im only 12.
If I may ask, how did you break your iPod Touch 4g...?
I just bought an iPod Touch 4g and an Armored Case to give my 8 year old grandson for Christmas.
He has been using my iPad 1st gen for almost two years (under close supervision) and I'm hoping that he will respect the new iPod Touch as much as he does my iPad.
I can think of more than a few problems with a 1st gen iPad,
1. it can not be updated past iOS5
2. it is heaver and harder to haul around in your pack pack
3. it is harder to hold onto and crashes a lot harder on the floor than a iPod Touch
So on that note: I think that you should put another iPod Touch and an Armored Case on your wish list.
Edit
I almost forgot, see > Refurbished iPod - Apple Store (U.S.) -
I have an ipad first generation. I am trying to connect to a linksys router and the ipad is not finding the wireless network. What do I need to do? Thanks for your help.
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app
• Tap on Wi-Fi
• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
