looking to download iOS 5.1 to my iPad 2. How do I do it?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

If you already have iOS 5+ installed then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update option for direct update on the iPad. If you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes (you can also do it this way if you hae iOS 5+).
To update via your computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

A first gen iPad should update to iOS 5.1.1 (it doesn't support iOS6). An iPad 2, 3 or 4 should get updated to iOS 6.0.1, so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change.

You cannot. 5.1.1 is as far as you go with the original iPad. The hardware is not up to running iOS 7.

Problem: after downloading the iOS 6.0 update on iTunes, and verifying with apple, it says preparing iPad for update.
Then it gives the following error messsage:
The iPad "iPad" could not be updated. It is not eligible for the requested build.
I have tried the instructions provided on the Apple Support website (i.e making sure you're up to date, quitting iTunes, using a different USB port, and putting iPad in DFU mode, etc. nothing works! (tried 20+ times)
Can anyone help me?
