HT4972 How do you update an older iPod V4.2.1 to ios5.1

I am trying to upgrade my ipod touch to ios V5 but am struggling.  The current version is 4.2.1.  I was told that it would update automatically when connected to ITunes but this is obviously not the case.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I suspect you have a 2G iPOd. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1. See:

iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later. With OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1

Connect the iPod to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPod to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPod as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPod by right-clicking the iPod 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPod on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
What version of iOS that your iPod will be updated to will depend upon which generation it is - older iPod Touches can't update to more recent iOS versions.  If it's a recent model then it should update to iOS 6, in which case you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change.

  • HT4972 how do you update it without losing apps, and media?

My brother has a 4th gen ipod touch and he easily updated to iOS 5 by using the software updates button on general settings. He had no problems with losing apps, or media. I also have a 4th gen ipod touch but for some reason in my settings i do not have a software update button. when i tried to get the iOS 5 on my Windows PC it came up with a message saying that downloading it to my ipod will delete all media, and apps. How can i safely download it, or get a software update button.
    Thanks

For the wifi update option yu first have to update via USB to iOS 5.
To not lose you media and other stuff you need to do the update on your syncing computer and all the media has to be in your iTunes library. The backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like aps and music.
    See:
iOS 5: Updating your device to iOS 5
What you can do is connect the iPod to a computer and:
    - Treansfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right-clicking on the iPOd under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup. The restore will also update the iOS.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.

  • TS3694 How do I update my older Ipod touch from 2.2 to 4.2? When I try to update from Itunes I get a -1 error code

Thanks for any help you can provid.e

A -1 error code often indicates a hardware problem, but it can also indicate an inability of iTunes to connect to the update server due to being blocked by security software on your computer. For help with that possibility, see:
    Troubleshooting security software issues
If that fails, try updating from another computer. If that still fails, your iPod may have a hardware failure.
Note that if you have a first-generation iPod touch, it can only be updated to iOS 3.1.3, and that update is not free.
