All you have to do is connect the iPod to our computer and update via iTunes. You do not have to seperately erase and restore the iPod. That is done automatically as part of the update process.
To update see:
iOS 4: Updating your device to iOS 5 or later
You need iTunes 10.5 or later on the computer. Y will go to iOS 5.1.1. the last update fopr the 3G

I attempted to update the software of my dated iphone 3G last evening. My phone was constatantly connected with iTunes during the process. The iOS version 4.2 downloaded and installed successfully on my phone...only to state at the end that "Your SIM does not seem to be supported. Please insert a supported SIM....". It gives me no option on the phone other than making an Emergency call. I can't even restart or reboot the phone, or access springboard, etc. The black screen displays a USB cable plugged in to the iTunes logo. Maybe it was hacked before and now through the update it's locked back to the original carrier.

Why can't I update the software for my IPad model MB292LL? The ios is 5.1.1 and I have seen newer ios versions come out. Also, many apps aren't available for my Ipad because of the ios. Is this Apple's way of forcing you to buy a new IPad? If so, that *****!

How do I update the software on my 1st generation ipod touch?
I have an ipod touch 1st generation. I am unable to upgrade the software so that I may use newer apps like Instagram. What can I do? I also have a new imac, and a first generation ipad. None of the calendars will synch! I must be missing something! So frustrated as I would like to be able to use all to full capacity and easiness among devices.

i have plugged in my phone attempting at the new ios5 download multiple times and to begin with it claims to me that it cannot restore my ipod but gives no reason. but i continues with the download, and now i have a blank iphone with no data on it at all, says to plug it into itunes, so i do and it freezes in the same spot about a tenth of the way full of the bar below the apple logo.
roadpup27, having multiple replacement devices is no fun! I'm sorry you have to endure this experience with your phone. So I got a software update for iPod.. Thinking it would be knowing all it would do is update my iPod so it would work better i pressed accept. I guess I screwed it up because I was using FaceTime when impressed accepted it. A second later it shut off my iPod and began the update which took about ten minutes then it turned back on so I unlock it and immediately called back my friend on FaceTime. After spending two hrs on FaceTime I ended the call and immediately noticed my iPod was acting funny. It wouldn't lock when I pressed the button and it won't take a picture of the screen when I press those two buttons. And when I pressed those two buttons together to turn in off it went straight to voice control and I was like what. It won't turn back on unless plugged in. I don't know what is wrong with it. Enyone have an idea? Please help.

Can't restore my iphone 5 after attempting to update the software
and not it got stuck with recovery mode. I cant do the recovery as it says it cant contact the apple server I need help!!!

My iPhone is in recovery mode after attempting to update the software
How do i get my iphone to stop recovery mode, it is connected to itunes and everything. When i take my phone off itunes it restarts and tells me to connect to itunes, then tells me the phone is in 'recovery mode'. Please help me someone.
same exact problem here, phone won't go out of recovery mode. went to apple store, said to restore it but will lose all of my data. don't have it backed up. read that the restore resets the phone and deletes data however it does not actually 'erase' the data. if i can get the phone restored, how do i get the data too?

Once I update the software to iOS 7 can I still use my old backups saved on itunes?
I wanted to know if I can use my last backup onto itunes once Ive already updated to iOS 7, Because I need to delete most of my pictures before I can update because there isnt enough space for the update. And I know that backups contain photos and texts, So I was wondering if the new software update would affect that.
Absolutely! They only time the backup is not compatible is if you were trying to go backwards. I.E. From iOS 7 to iOS 6.

I updated mine and my parents iPhones. My photos stayed, but my parents photos seem to be deleted, yet when they receive a call the photo id for that person still shows up. How can I recover these photos?
You need to restore from your back up.

My ipad 1 is stuck on IOS 4 as these IOS 5 update instructions do not work. When I use itunes update the software looks for an IOS 5 software update file and the apple site doesn't seem have one anywhere!
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

I plugged my Ipad3 in order to update the software to version 6.1 but I got an error message and my Ipad is locked now, it's showing the Itunes logo with USB cable on the screen. What should I do now?

Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for iPad to turn off.
If you cannot turn off iPad using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the iPad turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPad. When you reconnect the USB cable, iPad should power on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the recovery mode alert that iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode.

When I plug my IPOD touch into my Dell computer it comes up with Judy's IPOD, the click on where it says internal storeage then a folder comes up that says DCIM then click on that and another folder comes up 800AAAAA and when you click on that all you see if pictures. I am afraid to update the software on the IPOD I am afraid it will erase all my songs. Does anyone have any idea what the problem or can I update the software without fear of losing all my songs.
You have to follow these instructions. When they say restore from backup your iPod will also be updated.
