Apple has a recycle program, but it will only give you 10% of a new iPod. Your best bet is to sell the existing iPod and use the proceeds to purchase a new unit.

I had the same problem with my iPad, i couldn't get the newer version of itunes because the computer was too old and my iPad couldnt sync with the old itunes. I got a PC from school a few months later so that solved the problem for me. Unfortunately i don't think there would be a program to put your music on your iPod, iTunes should be the only way to transfer files to Apple devices. If it's an older iPod, its software is not being updated by Apple. So, I don't see how updating iTunes would make the iPod not work with the car's audio system, since iTunes just updates the song files (not how the iPod operates).

Apple will only give you a 10% "recycling" discount if you turn an old iPod in when you purchase a new one. You are usually better off just selling the old one
