  • No "Software Update" button in my General settings

All of a sudden, I am not able to log on to any internet sites on my iPad.  I checked the WiFi and it is excellent.  Then I found out that there is no Software Update button in my General Settings anymore.  I thought I needed to update the software.  And even though I have a WiFi signal, I cannot get on iTunes, Apps or any other website.  I Reset my network settings, signed in again and still no web access or Software update feature.  Do I need to plug my iPad into my Mac?  I am afraid to corrupt my computer.  I tried to find my operating system in my settings folder, but I couldn't find it.  Has this happened to anyone else?  Any help would be appreciated!

The Settings > General > Software Update option only shows if you have iOS 5+ on the iPad - you current version is shown in Settings > General > About > Version. If you are on iOS 4 then you will need to do the next update via your computer ( the iPad and your Mac are different operating systems, so I'm sure why you think the iPad will corrupt it).
If you want to update to the current version (i.e. 5.1.1) then connect the iPad to your computer and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

I do not have a software update option under my general settings.  How do I update to ios 4.0 to get free apps???

... and the option to update the software from the iPod using Settings/General is not available on iOS 4 or earlier.
You can get free Apps with iOS 3.x - providing they will run on the version you have. That's dependant upon your model of iPod. So before anything else, which version of iOS do you currently have on your iPod and do you know which model you own?

If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

If you have an iPad 2 you will be able to update to the latest iOS level which is 6.1.2

  • HT1222 How do I update my first generation iPad without the software update button in the general settings menu?

When I go to my app store the store will load but nothing within the store will load. I haven't updated my Ipad in a long time because the computer died I would use. I have tried different things but can not find a way to update to the new operating systems which is what I believe is causing my problems in the app store.

Need to update iso but I don't have a soft wear update in my general setting

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • HT4623 i don't have the "software update" button in the general settings bit on my unlocked iphone 3GS? how do i update my iphone 3gs?

i have an unlocked iphone 3gs, and i want to update it. it doesnt have a software update button in the settings section under general. how do i do it? would i have to plug the iphone into the computer of the person who used it before i did? please help!

Plug it into itunes with the USB cable.  The over the air update feature is a new feature, not part of iOS4, so you do not have it to use until you update.

Your iPad should be updated to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change - though google do have app versions in the store

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.
