HT4972 Trying to update my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5..when I go to General----below ABOUT---there is no Software---option...?

Help! Pulling my hair out trying to update my iPhone 3GS with iOS 5...when I go to " Settings"---general-- under "about" there is no " software" option.....right now I am typing on my iPad 3 so I can see better..
