HT4972 Updating an iPhone 3G
I have an iPhone 3G... I'm trying to use the Square credit card scanning device, but it's saying that I need to update my iPhone 3G to iOS 5. Can I do that on this iPhone?
The iPhone 3G can only go as high as 4.2.1. It was discontinued over 2 1/2 years ago. A 3GS can run 6.1.

My brother gave me his old iPhone (Apple iPhone 3GS 16GB Black (MC131X/A) HSDPA Mobile Phone) and I have reset it using iTunes, but am having trouble activating it. Any ideas why? It has not asked for any login ID or password.

I have tried multimple times via the phone and iTunes.
I think iTunes said the update was to OS 6.1 or something.

Fee charged by the technician could have been saved, by a bit of more research.
Well, I understand that 3GS phones won't be supported much longer on updates. So it wouldn't bother me if there weren't any more updates.
is not correct. Apple has recently released iOS 6.1.2 for this iPhone.

The screen you're seeing on your iPhone indicates it is in recovery mode. Now since the device is not appearing in iTunes on your PC, first follow the steps in this article:

After following those steps, you should be able to restore your iPhone.

i have version 4.3.3 and am updating my iphone software. I am updating it on a computer that is not mine, as i only have an iPad. Can I do this without loosing my music, apps, photos, etc?
You do see the devices heading on the left sidebar? If you don't see the sidebar, go to View>Show sidebar in the iTunes menu and then check to see if the device appears.
If that isn't the problem, go through the troubleshooting steps. It could be the Apple Mobile Device Service issue.

I recently updated my iPhone to iOS5 and it worked o.k. Then I updated my wife's iPhone and it loaded all my data (pictures, phone numbers, etc.) to her phone. All her data is gone. Is there a way that we can re-load her data?
If there is a backup somewhere that had her data you can restore that backup. Otherwise, all her data has been overwritten by yours.

I have just updated my iphone 3gs from iOS 4.1 to the last one which give me iTunes, by iTunes, I introduced my language, country, wi-fi, and when I got the step of activation iPhone, I got a message that says

Probably because you have an iPhone 3G and 4.2.1 is the latest update that you can get for that phone - it is too old to support anything further.
If you have an iPhone 4, then connect the phone to iTunes to update it and ensure that you have the latest version of iTunes too. -

Please read and follow the instructions of the Apple link you posted from. Please note, if you have a 3G as opposed to a 3GS, you can not upgrade above iOS 4.2.1.

Most likely your phone was hacked to unlock it from the carrier it was locked to. When you updated it the lock was restored.
