HT4972 Updating without syncing

Can you update an iPad 2 to iOS5.1.1 if you do not have an iTunes library? I.e. if you do not sync your iPad at all, to any other device.

If you are on a version earlier than 5, no, you will to connect to a computer running a current version of iTunes.
If you are on 5 or later, open then Setting app, select General, then Sotware update. Follow the instructions. You will need to be connected to the Internet via WiFi.

  • HT4972 update without losing all info

I really need to update my iphoe 4 but I don't want to lose all my music, photos and apps, how do I back them up first?

If things went correctly your phone should look the same.  But now you are able to sync with your new computer without losing your data.  If you succesfully synced your phone with iTunes and still have all your apps and other data intact then you're all set.  (If you didn't get a merge or replace prompt for calendars or contacts you may not have chosen to sync these by selecting to do so on the Info tab of your sync settings.)
Updating is another thing; it does erase the phone but restores from backup later.  Read "The Update Process" here: https://sites.google.com/site/appleclubfhs/support/advice-and-articles/updating- ios so that you understand what to expect before updating your phone.  Also, as a precaution, before updating your phone you should always import all your photos to your computer and back up your contacts.  If you don't have any other way to back up your contacts use the app My Contacts Backup.

  • Smart playlists not updating without syncing

I've had the 30GB video for over a year. All the latest iTunes software and Vista OS. I probably have over 100 playlists of both kinds (static and "smart"). Some time in the past few months (maybe a year), the smart playlists stopped updating dynamically without a sync. I've been an ipod freak for over 3 years and I own a shuffle, nano, and a very old paper weight.
    Simple playlist:
    Playlist IS "static playlist name"
Last played IS NOT in the last 1 day
Songs should drop off after they play. They don't. I've scanned the web for a real answer and haven't found anything helpful.
Please help me before I start doing crazy things like backing everything up, removing all my playlists, and starting all over!
Life started when the ipod was born

I have a smart playlist of podcasts syced to my iPod Touch that has worked with iOS 3 and works with iOS 4, using the settings described here: http://bit.ly/c9GoOF . The key is to check "Live updating". Once the podcast finishes playing it drops off the playlist as expected.
I had the "bright" idea of also including a playlist identical to the first but with "Live updating" not checked (see http://bit.ly/922a2L ). I did this so that I had a playlist containing the already-played podcasts in case I wanted to go back to listen to them again.
The trouble is that this playlist doesn;t sync properly with iTunes. The only fix I found was to sync twice: Sync once, right-click, edit the Smart playlist, make no changes and press OK, and sync a second time.
    Has anybody seen this behavior?

  • ASAP Help needed for iOS4 - Updating without syncing to iTunes

Right, I'm currently unavailable to access the computer that I sync my iPhone with and cannot access it for the forseeable future as I'm going away from home for a while tomorrow. I need to know if I can sync my iPhone with a computer that is not my standard syncing one that has iOS4 downloaded on it without my iPhone syncing and losing all of my data - and if this is possible how to do it.
    Thanks

You should be ok to update your phone on any pc or mac.
When you update iTunes will back up your phone to that computer, and will update only the os.
If you restore though you won't be able to sync your music, photos, podcasts, or apps but your contacts, email accounts and setting will be restored.

  • Can I do backups and updates without syncing with itunes?

I want to use other methods to put content on my IPAD and just use Itunes for backing up my IPAD and installing updates. I also want to be able to manually put content on my IPAD using drag and drop within Itunes. If I select the checkbox in preferences to prevent automatic syncing will this do what I want?
    Thanks.

Yes, if you check the box to prevent automatic syncing, you will have the control to do what you want to do. I have always chosen the option to not automatically open iTunes or to sync when I connect any of my "iDevices". I check the music, apps, photos, books, etc, that I want to sync -always have and always will. I drag and drop as well at times. I want the control and that is how you get it, by checking that box in the preferences.

  • HT4972 update without a sim card

How do can i update my iphone without having a sim card in.

iPhones require a SIM card for activation.
Part of the update process requires activation of the device.

  • Calendar event updates without sync

Can iPhone be set up to receive changes in one's Outlook calendar events without plugging the phone into one's desktop computer in the same way that iPhone gets mail messages? Most of the current Mobile Windows phones and I believe all Blackberrys do this. If not, is anyone aware of why not and when Apple may fix this?

This is called over the air syncing (OTA) for short and the iPhone does not support this.
I believe this would involve Apple licensing ActiveSync from Microsoft with no way of knowing if Apple has any plans to do so.

  • How do I update and sync a new Iphone without adding an old Iphones Info?

I used to have an I phone 3 that was backed up on my laptop. I then got a new Iphone 4 and have never synced or updated it in a year(I know that sounds crazy lol). I want to sync and back up the info on my newer Iphone 4 without adding what was on my old Iphone 3 to it and replacing my current contacts and data. I am scared that when I go to sync it and update, it will clear my new Iphone 4 info to put on the old contacts and what not.
Will updating and syncing my new Iphone do this, or will it just clear my backed up Iphone 3 info and replace it with my newer Iphone info and back up the new Iphone 4 data? Thank you so much!!!

You need to move all your data from the original computer over to the new computer first.

  • My itunes says that my ipod is synced with another library when it is not and cannot update or sync without wiping it and all its data

My itunes says that my ipod is synced with another library when it is not and cannot update or sync without wiping it and all its data
    Can anyone help me

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your iPod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
All media content will be erased during the first sync, but you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Can I update my dads ipad from my computer without syncing?

My dad is in town and I want to help him update his ipad to ios5.Can I update my dads ipad from my computer without syncing my stuff onto his ipad??

You could but it's probably not advisable, because as part of the update process all content is removed from the iPad, the update is then applied, and the content is then re-synced to the iPad - so is all your father's content (media, apps, synced photos etc) on your computer so that they can be re-synced back to it ? It is usually best to only sync and do updates via your own computer.

  • HT4972 Updating my iPad to iOS 6

I'm trying to update from 4.3.3 to 6.14 and software update does not show up under settings general

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • Move audio between GarageBand and iTunes on iPad WITHOUT syncing to a computer?

Is it possible to transfer audio on my iPad from GarageBand to iTunes WITHOUT syncing with a computer?  Specifically, I would like to edit some audio for an iMovie project.  I feel like I should be able to take an audio track from iTunes, chop it in GarageBand, send it back to iTunes, and then use it in iMovie without being dependent on a separate machine.  Am I dreaming too big here?

I guess I wasn't completely understanding what exactly you would like to do. The article HT4972 refers to updating your software, and you are right it does not explain how to back up the contents of your ipad and restore and there should be a link within the article for that. The following article we explain how to restore your ipad software and there's link to an article expalining how to back up. Make sure your version of itunes is completely up to date, and the computer for that matter. Connect your ipad to the computer, open the summary page and choose backup to this computer.
(go to #5 for restoring from a previous backup)
