HT4972 Why can't I update my iPhone 3G iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 5?
I tried to update my iPhone 3G iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 5 or the current version. It wouldn't let me
update, and said that iOs 4.2.1 is the current firmware. I want to update the iOS to at least 4.3 , 5 , or 6 for games and other apps. Please show me step-by-step on how to solve this situation in your answer box.

There are actually a lot of games which are compatible with your older device which runs iOS 4.2.1. You just need a tool to separate them from the incompatible apps.
Here is my favorite solution:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
And here are some things other people have suggested:
Vintapps 3.1.3 - paid app.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.

You appear to have an iPhone 3G, which can't be updated past 4.2.1. If you happen to have a newer iPhone, it will be updated to 6.0.1 or 6.0.2, not 5.0.

I have just updated my iphone 3gs from iOS 4.1 to the last one which give me iTunes, by iTunes, I introduced my language, country, wi-fi, and when I got the step of activation iPhone, I got a message that says
"your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavlaible. Try connecting ypur iPhone to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a few minutes."
The thing is, that I am connected to iTunes, so Can anyone tell me how can activate it?

The version of iTunes can limit iOS levels. Are you running iTunes 11?

Sorry you can't. The highest IOS for a 3G i-phone is 4.2.1.
You would need to get an iphone 4S or higher to use those apps, that require a higher IOS. -

Why can't I update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1? Every time I try it gets all the way done downloading it; however when it's processing the file the page tells me "There is a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. Network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active. or try again later." and next to the file it has err = -3259. I have tried this 17 times and it won't work. My iTunes is completely up to date. I have made sure that my connection is fine and I have tried turning my firewall off with no avail. This has happened to me before but usually the update will go through after 2-3 tries, never to this extent. I don't know what to do. Help!
