Why can I not find software updates or icloud on this iphone 4?
If you are going to use her PC to update make sure that you do the following:
BEFORE you plug your phone into the PC. Open iTunes. At the top of the window, click on Edit then Preferences and this will pull up the General Preferences menu..Click on the little icon that looks like a phone under devices..choose the option to DO NOT automatically synce this iPhone, iPod or iPad with iTunes, this ensures that your device will not be synced with her iTunes information.
Once you do that, click done, then click on your deivce name in iTunes and it will bring up the Summary page which will give you the option to Check for Updates.

because you do not have a 3rd generation device. The OS Version says so , otherwise you would be at 4.3.5 minimum and also Itunes is also always correct in determining if you have the latest OS ( if not it fetches the newest from Apple's Servers ) . And because a 2nd generation iPod stops at 4.2.1 you can't get the newest OS, because your device is old. Buy a new iPod , they have iOS5 preinstalled. -

I tried running the new itunes installer since it couldn't update itunes, then I tried the installer with
compatability checked. The older version worked fine till an update came out and now nothing works
(sync /app updates/ photo uploads)- it does still play music on the computer.
My son had older (windows 7) computer but if I sync there it tells me I'm wiped and stuck with his music.
I'm really hating itunes and ready to trash the phone etc. Im due for upgrade anyway.
With all these stupid upgrades why hasn't this issue been addressed. 8 has been out for awhile now.
Has anyone been able to fix this issue? Please share how!You will need iTunes 9.2.1 at minimum to access the iTunes Store. Earlier versions will not work.

but it would be best to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6, since it's probable that eventually the iTunes Store will no longer support iTunes 9.x. and newer versions of iTunes will not run on Mac OS X 10.4.

your iphone is definitely supported for the update, is it not showing up in Settings / General / Software Update?
if not, try plugging your phone into itunes and do the update there. -

Try going into the control panel, programs, add/remove programs
Uninstall iTunes, apple mobile device service, apple application support
Then go to apple and redownload and reinstall iTunes and try again.
