If you have an iPad 1G you cannot run iOS 7. If you are currently using iOS 4.x.x then you cannot upgrade OTA. Instead do this:

Download Apple – iTunes 11.1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes. Select your device under the Devices heading in the iTunes' sidebar. Click on the Summary tab in iTunes' main window. Click on the Update button.

Go to Settings > General > About and see what iOS version you are running. If it is lower than 5, you won't find the software update button. It was added when iOS 5 came out. The current iOS is 5.1.1. To update to the current OS, you'll need to connect to the computer you sync with (this is important - do not connect to a computer you do not sync with as you will lose you apps) and update the software in iTunes. Once you have updated to the 5.1.1, the software update button will be in Settings going forward. Make sure you have a lot of time. Updating from below 5 to 5 or higher is a somewhat lengthy process.

Upgrade to Snow Leopard - it's compatible with the latest version of iTunes, and still supports PowerPC applications.

Snow Leopard is required if you wanted to upgrade to Lion, anyway, which you may want to in the future if the latest version of iTunes no longer supports Snow Leopard.

Welcome to the Support Communities! If you are having issues trying to update your Aunt's iPad, the troubleshooting steps below may help:
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update - Apple Support
Update does not complete
If you're installing the update and the progress bar appears to move slowly, be patient. The time an update takes depends on the size of the update and the number of files on the device.
When you're updating over the air, keep your device connected to a power source so that it doesn't run out of power. If your device does run out of power, connect it to a power source and turn on the device to let the update or restore complete.
If the update never completes and the progress bar hasn't moved for an extended time, try restarting your device. If you still see the issue after you restart, see what to do if your device appears frozen or won't start.

"Software upgrade" not shown in general settings....trying to upgrade to ios 6.0 or better but can't.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    1.    Go into the iPad's Settings.
    2.    Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
    3.    The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
    4.    Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
    5.    Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
    1.    If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
    2.    Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
    3.    After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
    4.    If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
    5.    After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
    6.    From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
    7.    After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
    8.    After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.

I updated my ipad with the IOS 6 but now the itunes in my computer (itunes 10.6.1) doesn´t recognizes it and I can´t upgrade to the last itunes because my computer has OS 10.5.8. Any ideas? Is there a way to download the itunes 10.6.3?

Please Help! Since I upgrade the ipad with the IOS6 I haven´t been able to sync the ipad with the computer. When I connect the two objects a popup itunes text box appears saying that in order to recognize the ipad I need itunes 10.6.3 or later. But I can´t find that version to download, I just find the latest version of itunes, 10.7, and for that one my computer doesn´t meets the operating system requirements.

Discharged? As in dead battery? If the battery is dead the best way to charge it is with its supplied power brick plugged into the wall. And if the battery is totally drained, it may take a good half hour or more for it to show any signs of life. If your only way of charging is via a USB (which is not the recommended way) then it may take even longer for the iPad to get enough power to turn on. Most USB's put out about half the power the iPad wants and even then only when the computer is on and awake.

What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
However, iTunes should ask if you want to backup before you update, but just in case create the backup yourself before you update. The backup contains your app data and settings - so make sure you backup first. If something goes awry when you update, with regard to apps, you can download them again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought them with.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.

Updated my ipad to the iOS 6.1.3, only apps, music and videos were restored?! HELP!!

I don't know if this is a stupid or noob problem, but I did the update and everything, then after it restored from my back up, i opened to see my ipad in factory settings?! I finished the setup and all, and then i saw all my apps not in the folders that they were meant to be in, no app data, no camera roll photoes, no background images and passcodes. So my ipad was pretty much restored and backed up onky with apps, music and videos. Nothing else!! In previous update+backup restores, the ipad just goes back to how it was before being updated, with everything in place like how it was originally. Later I also tried restoring again, form an earlier backup, but that did not work either. Someone please tell me what happened!!

Is this how the restore goes?
1. Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings
2. You'll be asked twice to confirm
3. You'll see Apple logo and progress bar
4. You'll see a big iPad logo on screen
5. Configuration start
6. Set language
7. Set country
8. Select Network and input Password>Join
9. Enable Location Service>Next

Why doesnt 3G work on my ipad after the IOS 7 upgrade

I recently upgraded my Ipad through Itunes on my PC and since then I am unable to retrieve email and data using the 3 G network. I have reset all of my user settings and checked my cellular data settings. All seems okay but the device will not recognise the telstra network, even in Brisbane CBD. Can any one suggest a quick fix before I go and buy a competitors device.

I have since posting this performed a full restore of the Ipad using Itunes 11.1.1.11 but to no avail.
Have read other suggestions on the web but unforunately no response from Apple yet. It would seem all the reported benefits of IOS 7 are far out weighed by the loss of service. Has this stuff been tested prior to release??

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
