HT4993 I got an iPhone 4S from work. It has an activation lock and the guy that had it no longer works here...is there a way around it?

All I'm wanting to do is unlock this so I can use it in a foreign country rather than buying a cheap phone when I get there. Because it has the lock I can't get past that screen. If I can Sprint will factory unlock for me. Is this a lost cause?

If there's a passcode on it(good for you!), then whoever stole it can only access your information if they can guess your passcode. However, they would likely get it disabled before guessing correctly, and be forced to Restore it. At that point, your information would be wiped off the device.
And Apple can do nothing to help you, unfortunately. If you did, however, set up "Find My iPhone" before you lost it, then you can track the device. If not, then sorry - you're probably not getting your iPhone back.

I think it does work as described, but the description is not very complete. Capitalization does not change any of the characters that you type; what it does is allow some of the lower case characters to display as capitals. If you copy the result and paste it as plain text, you'll see that the lower case characters are still there. It doesn't actually say anywhere that it can make capitals display as lower case, and it can't.
The obvious way around this is to actually type what you want.
The more powerful way is to install WordService from Devon Technologies which adds the functionality of Pages' capitalization menu as well a lot of other ones. WordService actually changes the character to the one displayed, and it works in most of the applications on your Mac.

This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.

You can transfer the purchases you made on your old iPhone 3 by plugging it in to iTunes and doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases from your IPhone to the iTunes on your computer. This will get music you purchased in iTunes, apps, etc. (e.g., movies).
But for the rest you would need to restore a backup of your newly deceased computer.

If you had iTunes Match before all this happened, yes. Just log in, activate iTM and download the music. If you did not have iTunes Match prior to these incidents, no, it can not help you.
You should also be doing regular backups of your personal data to an extnal HDD. If you had a backup hue could simply restore it.
