this has happened before and a coworker fixed it but i am clueless.

Try the following steps:
TS2802 iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
"No SIM installed" alert (GSM models only)
Remove the SIM card.
Verify that the SIM card is not damaged or dirty, then reinstall the SIM card.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Wait approximately two minutes, then see if iPhone detects the SIM card and if it will register on the network.
If that doesn't work, try another SIM card for that carrier, if possible, to see if it is detected.
If the message still exists, please go to: apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/ for information on service.
Note: If you need to send your iPhone in for service or if you want to temporarily use a different phone, you may be able to use the SIM card inside your iPhone with another GSM phone.

Yes, All iPhone 5's have SIM cards... regardless of carrier.
Remove and reinstall the SIM.
If the issue continues, get a replacement SIM from Verizon.
FYI, Verizion uses SIM's in all there LTE devices.

If you haven't already tried, see if you can force it into recovery mode to restore it:

There is nothing on the iPad itself that can tell you. Did you buy it from a reputable retailer? You can try asking them.

I'm guessing that place's phone still has the SIM in it.
Mine did and I got that error as well yesterday.
It seems some people have been having an issues where all of the sudden, the SIM card isn't being recognized (in my case, I had successfully made a call with the phone just minutes before and then all of the sudden, it's telling me no SIM card).
Rebooting the phone nor resetting the network settings worked to get it to recognize the SIM card.
I ended up powering off the phone, popping the SIM card out, leaving it out for a couple minutes, and then putting it back in.
When I powered the phone back up, it recognized the SIM card and so far, it's been fine.

Thanx, the phone isn't locked tho, i had a nokia with the pre paid optus sim and the new phone has the new telstra micro sim in it, they told me once the optus sim stops working the new telstra one should start working but its not. and i can't do anything with the iphone, i have been trying to connect it to itunes becuase i thought that would work, but still nothing is happening.. bit confused and annoyed as i have no phone until it sorts out.

Although you say you have let the battery drain, was it for long enough? Since nothing else that you've tried so far has worked, I suggest that you leave the iPod unplugged for at least four days, preferably a week. That way, if something is stopping the iPod from turning the screen on, then whatever it is will drain the battrey. However, since the screen isn't on, that may take longer than if the screen was on.
Then, after that time, plug the iPod into a power source and leave it alone for at least thirty minutes. Only after thirty minutes will it show any signs of life, but you should leave it until it is fully charged before trying to use it.
If you get to this stage, the fact that the battery has drained will cause the iPod to reset when it springs back to life.

You say "It won't let me download iTunes ...". I cannot imagine what you mean. What does "It" mean?
iTunes is a part of iOS on your iPhone. If your iPhone can turn on, iTunes is already there. You cannot separately download iTunes to iPhone; you would have to update iOS to get a fresh copy.
