What Library upgrade 1? Are you updating from v5 or earlier? As well as installing you need to run it too.

  • HT5037 I have downloaded the Library Upgrader (twice!) but Spotlight can't find it and there are no instructions here on how to use it.Kludge!

I am trying to use my existing iPhoto Library with my new MacBook Pro, and I keep getting a message "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared." I then go to HT5037, which tells me to download the iPhoto Library Upgrader. I do that and install the Upgrader, which then appears nowhere on my HD and can't be found by Spotlight, but even if it were, nowhere are there instructions for using the phantom upgrader. Anyone have any advice (other than switch to Lightroom)?

It's in Applications/Utilities. Double click on it to run it.

  • What can I do? Every "iPhoto Library Upgrader" I've downloaded fails to prepare the my iPhoto Library, so I can't open iPhoto any more.

What can I do? Every time I download & run "iPhoto Library Upgrader" it fails to "prepare" the my iPhoto Library, so I can't open iPhoto any more.
(My MacOS & iPhoto are the latest versions.)
Ever since my last upgrades, every time I try to open iPhoto, a Alert box pops up saying, "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader", and it gives 2 options: a "Learn More" button or "Quit" (iPhoto) button. The "Learn More" button links to Apple's "iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader" page (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5037), but whenever I then download and run that page's linked app, the same thing happens all over again.
It does no good to rebuild the iPhoto Library (holding down the command & option keys while reopening iPhoto): the same thing happens.
It does no good to use iPhoto Library Manager (http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/) to rebuild the iPhoto Library, as was suggested elsewhere: the same thing happens.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto 9.3 & Library upgrades lead to editing glitches...

I recently upgraded to iPhoto 9.3 which required an iPhoto library upgrade as well. Once I did this, the Highlights and Shadows sliders no longer worked properly. Any adjustment of these sliders caused the image to go black. A person with a similar problem posted this in another discussion:
CoreImage: highlightsAndShadows: fragment program failed to compile
I tried myriad of solutions to no avail. (i.e. rebuilt library, rebuilt database, repaired permissions, created new library, created new user account, deleted files from cache and preferences folders, reinstalled iPhoto and upgrades, re-installed Lion.)
Here was my solution (this will only work if you have a time machine backup from before the iPhoto and Library upgrades and an iPhoto installer):
    1. Restore iPhoto to a point before the iPhoto 9.3 and Library upgrades
    2. Trash iPhoto and Receipts
Drag iPhoto from Applications folder to Trash
From Go menu in Finder select Go To Folder and type in /var/db/receipts and delete all iPhoto pkg files
    3. From Finder, go to HD/Library/Application Support and delete iPhoto 11 folder
    4. Reinstall iPhoto 9.0 from disk and run updates from Apple - Support - Downloads.
         Upgrade to iPhoto 9.1
         Upgrade to iPhoto 9.2.3
I have on older MacBook (black - late 2006). I am refraining from updating to iPhoto 9.3 at this time. I do not know what caused this issue. This solution worked for me and I am once again able to edit my photos.
I hope this helps anyone with similar problems.

    Did you reboot your Mac?
This is the iPhoto for iOS forum. I'll report your post and request that it be moved to the iLife > iPhoto forum in thehope yo get more help there.

As for goign back: do you have an undamaged library?

  • HT5037 What is the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool?  Should not need it, because installed Photo 9.5.1 three days ago, AND my iphoto will not open. The message says if I have v8.x or later, I don't need this tool.

Why is my iPhoto 9.5.1 blocked?
Message on pop up screen says I need the Library Upgrader tool, when in the very discription of it: "If your library is from iPhoto (v8.x) or later, you don't need to use this tool."

What version of iPhoto did you have prior to upgrading to iPhoto 9.5.1?  The following is from this download page: iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1
This tool prepares libraries from iPhoto 7 or earlier so they can be upgraded with the current version of iPhoto.
So if you previous version of iPhoto was 7 or earlier you need to download (it installs in the Applications/Utilities folder), launch and apply it to your iPhoto Library before opening the library with iPhoto 9.5.1.

  • HT5037 photo library upgrade has hung up my iPhoto program and library

I got this message to upgrade my photo library, and it has made my iphoto inoperable. I get a continual spinning circle in the center, while it is supposedly upgrading my photo library. I can't select the Quit button on the upgrade message, and I can't close the program.  If someone knows how to get out of this inconvience I would appreciate the advice

Force quit, backup your iPhoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your library

Thanks, it worked first time that  I double clicked as you suggested.
Why do Apple make it so hard to upgrade some programs?  They could make the follow through instructions a lot clearer.
Now I have it open-  it works and.....................  it does look pretty neat.

  • HT5037 iPhoto Library Upgrader Not Working Properly

I followed the instructions, but when i clicked 'continue' in the Library Upgrader to upgrade my older iPhoto library, the original message about how my iPhoto library needs to be upgraded popped up

What version of iPhot do you ave hat is gving you this message?
    You say
am trying to upgrade the iPhoto library to transfer it to my new MacBook Air.
Instead move the libray to the MBA and  upgrade it there using the version of iPhotot that is there  - you can not upgrade it on the old system with the old version of iPhoto
And the library upgrader does not upgrade the library - it modifies version 7 and earlier libraries so that the new version of iPhoto can upgrade them successfully
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • HT5037 iPhoto Library Upgrade Issues

I recently purchased a new iMac that came with iPhoto 9.3.1 installed. I migrated files from an older Mac to my iMac. When I try to open iPhoto I got a message the I needed to install an iPhoto Library Upgrade. I found the upgrade and installed it. I still received the same message. I discovered an iPhoto update to 9.3.2 in the Mac App Store and installed it hoping that it would fix the problem. No such luck. I still receive the iPhoto library upgrade notice. So I downloaded and installed the library upgrade again. Still no luck. In the end, I removed my iPhoto libraries from the Pictures directory and iPhoto started right up. All of my photos are still in tact, only the libraries I organized them into are lost. If you are not able to revert back to an older version of iPhoto, which I am not able to do, this appears to be the only way to fix this problem. Fortunately, I did not have many libraryies set up in iPhoto.
I hope this is helpful to some of you who are in the same boat.

Backup your iPhoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild the library

  • HT5037 iphoto will not open although i have installed the library upgrade

iphoto will not open even after installing the library upgrade ....

Ok - but since we do not read minds we need to you tell us what you are talking about
If you are upgrading from a pre iPhoto 6 version of iPhoto to a newer version (one possible guess) then you download the upgrader, run it and then launch iPhoto so it can upgrade to the correct version.
If that is not it then what exactly are you trying to do? if upgrading, what is the old version adn the new version and what OS? And what does happen?
