I installed it successfully and restarted the mac, but I'm still getting the same error message saying I need it? gah!

You have to install and RUN the library upgrader if you are upgrading from version  or earlier - go to yoru applicatons folder ==> utilities and double click on the library upgrader to run it - then launch iPhoto to finsh the upgrade

  • HT5037 iPhoto Library Upgrade Issues

I recently purchased a new iMac that came with iPhoto 9.3.1 installed. I migrated files from an older Mac to my iMac. When I try to open iPhoto I got a message the I needed to install an iPhoto Library Upgrade. I found the upgrade and installed it. I still received the same message. I discovered an iPhoto update to 9.3.2 in the Mac App Store and installed it hoping that it would fix the problem. No such luck. I still receive the iPhoto library upgrade notice. So I downloaded and installed the library upgrade again. Still no luck. In the end, I removed my iPhoto libraries from the Pictures directory and iPhoto started right up. All of my photos are still in tact, only the libraries I organized them into are lost. If you are not able to revert back to an older version of iPhoto, which I am not able to do, this appears to be the only way to fix this problem. Fortunately, I did not have many libraryies set up in iPhoto.
I hope this is helpful to some of you who are in the same boat.

Backup your iPhoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild the library

  • HT5037 iPhoto Library Upgrader Not Working Properly

I followed the instructions, but when i clicked 'continue' in the Library Upgrader to upgrade my older iPhoto library, the original message about how my iPhoto library needs to be upgraded popped up

What version of iPhot do you ave hat is gving you this message?
    You say
am trying to upgrade the iPhoto library to transfer it to my new MacBook Air.
Instead move the libray to the MBA and  upgrade it there using the version of iPhotot that is there  - you can not upgrade it on the old system with the old version of iPhoto
And the library upgrader does not upgrade the library - it modifies version 7 and earlier libraries so that the new version of iPhoto can upgrade them successfully
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • HT202358 iPhoto Library Upgrader will stops in the middle of operation and will not finish. Now what?

I downloaded iPhoto Library upgrader, installed and attempted to use it. It stops in the middle of operation and will not finish. Now I cannot open my iPhoto Library! I'm freaking out a little. When I try to open iPhoto, it tells me I need to "prepare it" with the upgrader program. When I select iPhoto Library as the Library I want to upgrade, it tells me I don't need to upgrade it and should be able to open it with iPhoto. Ugh. Help??

If your photos have any value to you you should have an ongoing backup program - TimeMachine is a good first choice
For this purpose simply duplicating the iphoto library is adequate since you are not trying to protect against human or hardware failures - just against a rare rebuild issue

  • HT5037 installed the iPhoto library upgraded and still getting same error.

i've downloaded and installed the iPhoto library upgrader, clicking on iPhoto app and still getting the same pop up message, "install iPhoto upgrader"

You need to go to the Applications/Utilities folder, double clic, on the iPhoto library upgrader to launch and run it on your library.  Then launch your iPhoto application to open the library.

  • HT5037 What is the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool?  Should not need it, because installed Photo 9.5.1 three days ago, AND my iphoto will not open. The message says if I have v8.x or later, I don't need this tool.

Why is my iPhoto 9.5.1 blocked?
Message on pop up screen says I need the Library Upgrader tool, when in the very discription of it: "If your library is from iPhoto (v8.x) or later, you don't need to use this tool."

What version of iPhoto did you have prior to upgrading to iPhoto 9.5.1?  The following is from this download page: iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1
This tool prepares libraries from iPhoto 7 or earlier so they can be upgraded with the current version of iPhoto.
So if you previous version of iPhoto was 7 or earlier you need to download (it installs in the Applications/Utilities folder), launch and apply it to your iPhoto Library before opening the library with iPhoto 9.5.1.

  • I updated my MAC to Mavericks and purchased iPhoto 9.5.  Installed new version of iPhoto and installed using iPhoto Library Upgrade as directed.  Each time I try open iPhoto I receive the same message.

I updated my MAC to Mavericks and purchased iPhoto 9.5.  Installed iPhoto; however when I try to open iPhoto I receive The folling, "To open your library with this version of  iPhoto, it first must be prepared.  To prepare use iPhoto Library Upgrade".  I have have downloaded and installed the upgrader, with no success.
I need to add that I am a senior and am not as computer savey as I should be.  Therefore, i really need step by step help.

After you download the upgrader, you will need to go to your Applications folder and find the Utilities folder.
In there will be the iPhoto Library Upgrader (version 1.1). Open the application and follow the instructions. Should get you going.

  • HT5037 I have installed the iPhoto Library upgrade, which confirms it was successfully installed, however when ever I try to open iPhoto 11, it refers me back to the bloody library upgrade again, so I can't use iPhoto any more.

Thanks, it worked first time that  I double clicked as you suggested.
Why do Apple make it so hard to upgrade some programs?  They could make the follow through instructions a lot clearer.
Now I have it open-  it works and.....................  it does look pretty neat.

  • HT5037 I installed the iphoto library upgrader and iphoto still will not open

I installed the iphoto library upgrader and iphoto still will not open. can anyone solve this?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

my iphoto wont open since i updated my mac, please help? it says i need to install an iphoto library upgrader which I have installed but still cant see my photos.

What version of iPhoto are you using? 9.6 is the current version.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • I just upgraded from IPhoto7 to 9.5. Now I can't open iPhoto without a downloaded tool to bridge the gap bewteen versions. I downloaded the tool and I still get the message "To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple."

I had to upgrade to Mavericks to send off the iCanendars I made in iPhoto. Then I had to upgrade my IPhoto from 7 to 9.5. Now when I go to open iPhoto I get the message "To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple."  Well, I installed the Upgrader, but I still get the message and can't open iPhoto.  I have tried restarting the computer, but that didn't help.  How do I get the computer to recognize the Upgrader?

You may get more replies in the iPhoto forum.

  • Missing iPhotos after iPhoto 9.5.1 install & iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1

    iMac 24-inch
    Mid 2007
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Downloaded iPhoto 9.5.1 from Apple website, Saturday, August 9, 2014.
When I tried to open iPhoto the message said "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.”
I successfully installed iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1
Only 248 of the >7000 photos in my iPhoto ’08, 7.1.5 now appear in my iPhoto 9.5.1 Library of the prior 18 months.
From 2008-2011 some photos appear in the Pictures section of Favorites and are viewed only in Preview.
I want to view all of the >7000 photos of the prior seven years from my iPhoto ’08, 7.1.5 Library to appear in my iPhoto 9.5.1 Library.
What must I do to make this happen?

    Hello Old Toad,
Using the first aid iPhoto 9.5.1 window directions, photos were recovered (it says Recovered Photos in the top horizontal bar of iPhoto 9.5.1) from the iPhoto 7.1.5 Library and now reside in the iPhoto 9.5.1 Library.
While the process I was directed to, by the iPhoto first aid window continued, the computer message said import.  I was under the impression that the photos from  iPhoto 7.1.5 Library were imported to the iPhoto 9.5.1 Library.  That's all.
It's all working smoothly right now.  Should I be concerned that I did something harmful?

Just open the app and follow the steps. It should look for your library and upgrade it. Make a backup of the iPhoto library before using the application
