HT5065 How to avoid "Optimizing movie..." in iBooks Author?

I find the "tips" at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5065 highly confusing.
It states that files that are already meeting the "requirements for audio and video on the iPad", will not be re-optimzied. (quote is a url-link on the support site)
Firstly, that link goes to "http://www.apple.com/ipad/", which is just iPad promo for consumers, nothing about the above promised requirements.
Secondly, when exporting from FCPX, using "Format: Apple Devices", I end up with a .m4v file - which according to the support states "You cannot use media that has .m4v or .m4p file extensions."
Thirdly, I waste my computer´s and my lifetime to sit and wait for hours of re-optimizing video...

Hi All,
Yes I have used compressor to prepare movie files for iBooks and when importing the movie file into iBA it starts to compress the already compressed file.
Additionally it also starts to compress other files that need no compression.
For example I wanted to use animated gifs in iBooks Author and it converts them into .mv4 files and the Gifs are unusable for the compression is so severe that the animated GIFs become unreadable.
Regards,
Nigel

  • How to avoid text cutting on iBooks?

    Dear All,
In epub 3 when multicolumn text used means text cuts on the top and bottom margin, flows on the next page. Kindly suggest me how to avoid these type of errors in iBooks.

    Hi Sreevidhya,
In the collection renderer that you are using in the layout, there are 2 collection renderer.
One for display on the tab and the other for display inside the tab content.
Edit the one for display on the tab, for the parameter Style Safe = Yes
    Check the layout now.
Check this link [Collection renderer settings|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/87/3d48475ee8bd448c4031aa98d90524/content.htm] for the section, Additional Parameters of the Collection Tab Renderer Settings Group

  • Can I move an ibook author file from one device to another?

I have ibook Author on my Macbook and my Mac Mini.  If I start a project on my Macbook, is it possible to transfer the incomplete file to my Mini (where all my pictures and charts are stored) later to complete it?
    ~~ Chikana

Just like any other file, save your book where you can find it - it will have the suffix .iba
Move that file, however you like, to your other computer and continue there.

I don't think they dropped the ball at all really. This is Version 1 and judging from the package contents employees at Apple have been at making this app for over a year. Send feedback to Apple requesting an enhancement and maybe it will show up in the future.
I know everyone expects a lot out of Apple, but this is a free offering and probably the best one out there to make an eBook as it stands right now. I agree footnotes, bibliographies and even other print based standards should be worked into the app, but also remember that this is an eBook and perhaps footnotes aren't as useful anymore in a hyperlink context.
It would almost be easier for someone to import footnotes into a database on a custom built website. Then find a way to create hyperlinks from the text to the entries of the database.
Also, just because you can drop in text generated from Pages or elsewhere doesn't necessary mean it should be done in the scope we are discussing. A footnotes import isn't practical by any means. Glossary terms could be imported though, but in what format? There are several standards footnotes are written so how could you match it up programmatically page by page? I suppose if everything were tagged a certain way it would help, but even that solution would require the author or designer to sit in front of a spreadsheet tagging every term that requires a footnote and glossary term.
I think DTM82 had a good idea. If you have footnotes already formatted from a previous text, maybe you could create a layout with a footer text box and connect that box sequentially throughout the pages that are created. That way you could paste in the footnotes to the text box at the beginning of each section or chapter and create page breaks where they need to end on each page.
I'll experiment with this idea and if I can get it to work, I'll post the solution.

  • How do I import templates in iBooks Author?

The folder /Library/Application Support/iBooks Author/Templates does not exist.
Even if I make it, it doesn't work.

    Same problem
If I Click the Finder icon in the Dock and choose Go > Go to Folder and enter: ~/Library/Application Support/iBooks Author/Templates/My Templates/
I can see a new template listed there, but it does not show when I go to iBA:File:New from Template Chooser.
Here's hoping they sort it out soon!

  • HT5067 Can you move an iBook Author file into Keynote?

I have created an iBook for a presentation, however I would like to create a Keynote presentation of the iBook file.
Does anyone know if an iBook file can be transitioned to keynote? If yes, how can I do this, please?
    Many thanks,
    Greg

You might consider sharing/exporting/printing to PDF. Then covert the PDF's pages to jpegs pr pngs which can then be used to export to whatever or used directly from KN.

  • How do you make footnotes in ibooks author

I have not been able to make footnotes nor does iBook import the footnote format from Word. This is frustrating since the software (iBooks) is intended for the creation of textbooks which contain many footnotes.

IBA doesn't support footnotes. The next-best thing would be to use numerical superscript references that you make hyperlinks to the notes. You should be able to select superscript as a character style in the font palette. Alternatively, use "[1]" as the footnote style and make the entire thing a hyperlink (including the angle brackets). This creates a larger target for tapping.
Be aware that, even if you do this, it will still be clumsy for the reader because iBooks does not have a "back" button. Once the reader follows a hyperlink, there is no way to easily get back to where the reader came from. For this reason, it's probably best to avoid internal hyperlinks and only use external ones (to web pages), because these links open in Safari, so the reader does not lose context.
    Michi.

  • How to show the formatbar in Ibook author again after upgrade

Since I updated iBook Autor I can't see my formatbar anymore. I looked a lot around but still can't find the menu option to show it up again. Anyone please?

Mine is broken it seems..I will reinstall now then.
Update: There was another wordlist bar (woordenlijst in Dutch) that was the problem of NOT showing the format bar.
So I said hide wordlist and show formatbar and then everything worked fine. It showed the formatbar. To me it seems a bug.

  • HT201611 how to play rented movies on another authorized device instead of the original rent device?

i needed some movies for a trip but my laptop downloads too slow so i needed to use my desktop, not working after moving files, but, the laptop in question is authorized, i moved the movie files from the desktop to my laptop adding them as files back into itunes
when i go to play the movies through iTunes, it just sits there staring blankly at me, no movie, no password confirmation, nothing, and they haven't even been played yet, they come up under un-watched but wont play
is there anything i can do or is this a limitation?
BTW both devices are using Windows 7

It's a limitation; only one computer can be authorized for any given rental. If desired, click here and ask the iTunes Store staff for assistance.

  • IBooks Author: How do you get the inset margins applied to the caption text of gallery widgets to preview correctly?

Currently the inset margins I set for caption text in the gallery widget reset to zero when previewed on different iPads. These galleries have multiple images and the captions are set to "individual caption per image" on the widget interaction panel. BUT the inset margins preview correctly if the gallery caption is set to "same caption for all images" in the gallery widget interaction panel. How does one fix this in iBooks Author? Would appreciate any advice or work arounds or suggestions.
    Thanks!

The arrows don't show up on the iPad, they are only to aid navigation within iBA. You can use boxes in the background to frame your galleries (as the background is off). I believe it's also possible to change the colour of the dots beneath the gallery too, although I forget how to do that right now.
About Apple's rigid UX – I agree that it can be frustrating. Apple intended iBA to be used by everyone, and the sort of design options and customisability we might want may confuse the less experienced user. Apple also wanted the UI for every book to be the same – from the point of view of the new user, once you've used one iBA ebook (or iBook, I'm not sure what Apple want us to call it), you can use them all. Otherwise end users would to get used to a slightly different UI on each book, which kind of works against the idea that ideally UI should be intuitive enough to be invisible. I can see the point in that. I have created a 'How to use' section in every iBA file I've made. It get's old quickly.
Oh, and (you probably know this, but…) you can choose your own custom icon for audio. It's limited, as it's only a placeholder image that allows you to play an audio file, there's no ability to pause the audio or stop it once you choose the view as thumbnail choice. Something I'd like to see changed.
Here's a link to Apple feedback page for iBA. Feel free to hammer it with your suggestions.
