HT5072 Font substitution in iBooks Author

Hi All
The font I'm using (HelveticaNeue Thin) at first appears in my iBook on my iPad, when I hit the Preview button, but when the preview has finished loading the font defaults to a different font (possibly Helvetica Regular?). Consequently the ends of each of my lines of text are being cropped.
The font being I've selected is an Open Type font and it was chosen from the font format bar, so should be supported.
Could it be conflicting with a font with the same name on my iPad?
The other font I've used is fine.
Any help to rectify this problem gratefully received.
Thanks

Same issue here. My web site has a .ttf font called Gentium, and I wanted to use it in my iBook. So I downloaded the font (no copyright issue) and, using Format=>Fonts=>Show Fonts (or shortcut Command+T), I substituted the new font into the book.
But Preview on iPad does not show my new font. Here's what to do: File=>Export=>iBooks, and send it to someplace like Dropbox. Using your iPad, go to your Dropbox, find the file (extension .ibooks), and click the icon in the far upper right, which shows an arrow pointing down. Then click Open in iBooks.
That should do it. You will now see your book with your replacement font.
Apple "obfuscates" your font when you export (and eventually publish) your iBook. They "protect" it from being changed back to the generic font. I'm an English teacher, and it took me awhie to figure out what they meant.

  • Using custom fonts in iBooks Author

I have a book in South Asian (Indic) script. The encoding is Unicode. I wanted to see how different fonts would look on iPad. Using iBook Author i created two different versions of the book. One used Gujarati MT, Apple supplied font. The second used open source TTF font. It checked out fine by MacOS when I installed it. The rendering of conjuncts (which would use additional glyph present in the font file) on iBook Author  looks good. When I use "preview" function of iBook Author to see how the content would look on iPad, conjuncts dont use special glyph but only standard character (I guess GSUB is not utilized). I tried the same experiment with Arial Unicode MS and Shruti both are standard fonts provided under Windows. it appears that only Apple supplied fonts have correct glyph substitution on iPad.
Is there a way to fix it?
If the issue is with iBook Author, I can use another software. My book is plain text so Author is an overkill. I was using it to test embedding of custom fonts because Author is easy to use.
If the issue is missing definition in the font that is required by iPad rendering engine, I can get the font author to enhance the font.
I attach four images. First two are from iBook Author where rendering is correct. The next two are from iPad where rendering using non Apple font is messed up.

Is comment about enhancing the font to support AAT still relevant? Are you saying that iOS needs those AAT extension that macOS does not need? Is this mostly around MORX table?
iOS (and OS X) comes with two Gujarati fonts, Gujarati MT and Gujarati Sangam MN.  So the easiest thing to do is to use one of those.   Other platforms will probably have their own default Gujarati fonts with different names.
If you want to embed a different Gujarati font in your .ibooks format book, then you will indeed have to convert that font from OpenType to AAT before iBooks will display it correctly.   It's not true that OS X no longer needs AAT Indic fonts -- Pages for example still cannot use Opentype Indic fonts.
To convert an Opentype Indic font to an AAT Indic font I think someone will have to add a morx table along the lines of what is contained in Gujarati MT.
Bear in mind that iBooks Author creates a format that can only be read on an iPad (unless you want to export to PDF).  If you want to produce books for all platforms and readers, then you need to use .epub format and a different app, like Pages or Indesign.   With epub format you would probably not normally try to embed fonts but just  rely on the reader to supply whatever Gujarati font is already on the device.

  • IBooks author font substitution problem

    Hi
Ive now been using IBA for a month or so and have to say its a frustrating piece of software.
This is my latest issue that i cannot resolve.
Ive been building a book for 2 weeks which is at the publishing stage and then all of a sudden when i opened it this morning it tells me that a font is missing and substitues it.
But the font is there and i can change everything back by appending the style sheets. Then if i save and close then reopen it tells me the font is missing again.
I do use Suitcase Fusion but have taken the step to put the fonts i use in IBA only in Font Book as .ttf's.
Also if i open the file on my Macbook, there is no font substitution and the book displays correctly even though the fonts in  Fontbook are the same ones as on my iMac.
    (Pulls hair out)!!!!
    Anyone have any ideas??

Yes its been working fine in all preview tests on my iPad and others in the company.
Plus my Macbook is a carbon copy of my iMac (i use CCC to clone the iMac HD)
Someone suggested that the two ways to change fonts in IBA causes some differences, apparently the top left dropdown menu when selecting fonts only show whats available for embeding and the drawer you get by clicking the 'A' in the top right shows all the fonts on your system.
    Still cant figure it out!!

  • Ibooks author font change

When opening up an iBA file, some of my text's fonts have been changed. (I did not change them).
The last time I saved my file, the text and formatting was correct, but when I opened the file again, some of my text is now messed up because iBooks Author has changed the font (from Palatino to Helvetica) and paragraph style on me.
Why does it do this? I have not messed with the file at all. Any ideas?

    Hi kkam08,
There several reasons the font could have changed. The problem might not be a bug or a corrupted file.
    1) Are you working from the same template in different files?
    2) Have you modified or reset the style on any default paragraph styles? (I.e., "body" paragraph style) What about any custom styles you created and possibly shared with another file?
    3) Did you import any text content from Word or Pages,
        Or
    4) Did you copy/paste from a PDF or word file that might have brought over Palatino or Helvetica?
    5) Have you opened files or templates someone else could have modified?
I noticed a similar change when I shared the same template between two different files. The problem happened after I modified paragraph or character styles in file #1, then found they had also changed when I opened file #2.
Depending on what triggered the change, one solution is to save & work from two different templates, so that cross file changes don't take affect.

If you are willing to use other apps to produce .epub instead of .ibooks, this may be useful:

  • How do I download a campaign font for use in iBooks Authoring rather than the standard fonts available?

Is it possible to use a campaign font when authoring an iBook rather than the standard font menu?

The font menu in the toolbar includes supported iOS fonts on the iPad. You are obligated to work with those fonts only.
While apps have a way to add additional fonts, iBooks Author does not provide support otherwise, sorry.
As an alternative, you can use any font you like and generate an image instead.

ibooks author, how do I get the standard book pages background into my document. I have published one book so far which does not display with a book pages background or options for font size.

No on the book title, no problem there.
The issue is: my book pages appear as on white paper, no background that resembles a open book and also no option to change fonts. The book was created in iBooks author, there was a problem going with the "Publish" menu route so I was instructed my Apple to "export" the file and submit that. I think that's the problem after reading that iBooks author is a hybrid epub file.
Thanks for getting back to me.

  • Does iBooks author and iBooks support thai fonts?

I ,live in Thailand, want to create books by using iBook author but from what i've know iBook only support one font for THAI language, is it true or not.
Also does iBooks author support modifed thai font from the internet?
Last one, can I use .ibooks for limited usage not for public?
    Thank you for your answer

The iPad only has one Thai font, Thonburi, and you cannot embed other fonts using iBook Author.  Here is some info about using other apps

  • IBooks Author TrueType font problem

I'm working on an iBook and I'm attempting to use a truetype font for a page heading, but when I preview it on my iPad, the font shows up correctly for a brief moment, then is replaced by something generic. I have confirmed in the Font Book application that the font is a .ttf, and it DOES show up in the font selector drop down menu on the formatting bar in iBooks Author. Why would the font show up correctly for a second or two and then disappear on the iPad?

It would appear that there's a bug in the preview mode. Maybe something to do with a cached version of the book? I fixed the problem by deleting the "proof" version on my iPad and re-sending it and now the truetype font shows up correctly.

but, I don't know how to activate the keyboard to type tamil within iBooks.
Go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and check the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar.  Then go to the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and select Tamil.  Then type.
What you type in iBooks Author is automatically Unicode.    I was referring to the case where you might use some sort of scanning to convert your print titles to digital text.

I have created a book in ibooks author with a custom font when previewing on the ipad the special characters within the font do not appear?

'custom' font sounds like you may be working with a font that is unsupported on iOS/iPad.
Supported fonts are found in the pull-down font menu in the toolbar. Authors are obligated (mostly) to stick to that list.

  • HT5072 What is the default font for I-books author. I believe it is Helvetica 14. thanks/marv

What is the default font for I-books author, the one brest to choose so that book is readable om an i-pad. Is it Helvetica 14? How about the paragraph pf text that introduces each chapter (it is a larger font, I believe) Thanks.

It depends on the template and the part of the text.  Just click your mouse on the text and you should see the font name in the format bar at the top.

  • How can I add an ePub into iBook author?

I am trying to insert an ePub file created on the App "My Story" into iBook author, any suggestions?

    Copy/paste
Open in Pages - use iBA's 'Insert Chapters from Pages' menu.
Either of those should work, basically. You'll need to check font substitution, etc.

  • Is there a way to create drop caps in iBooks Author?

Is there a way to create initial drop caps in iBooks Author?

    Great, drop caps work, thanks.
I wanted to kern them back (I can't help myself) and I found that if I put a space after the box and then kerned the space back, it worked visually. Do you think that will cause issues down the road? It previewed ok.
Also if I make the boxes too tight, again to make it more typographically pleasing, may I have issues later if people increase or decrease the font size?
I don't have an iPad yet so I can't check it that way. If something previews, will it run?
    thanks
