HT5096 Format required is Mac OS Extended (Case sensitive and Journaled)

In step 4 of this article, the disk must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Case sensitive and Journaled) or the system won't copy Backups.backupdb.

Really why not just check the box that says ignore ownership on the volume.

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • How do I change the Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) Format of my Verbatim External Hard Drive

    Good evening.
I have a Verbatim External Hard Drive, currently being used for my Time Machine back-up on my MacBook (Running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8).
I also frequently use a normal Windows laptop (Normal 32-bit OS).
The Hard Drive was formatted to Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) in order for the MacBook to do the Time Machine back-up.
How do I change the fromat of the Hard Drive, as i do not need the Time Machine back-up to be done on the Hard Drive anymore, and I NEED to use the external in both PC's.
Your assistance will be greatly apreciated.

Open Disk Utility, select the external hard drive, select erase, and format it as FAT32. You'll be able to use it with both Mac and Windows.

  • Not able to install adobe due to Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)?

My harddisk is Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and  this does not support adobe aplications. Is there a way of changing the format?

    No, not easily.
How and why is it case-sensitive?  Macs are case-ignorant by default, but a few 3rd-party apps require it.  Do you have another app that requires it?
Assuming you already have data on your Mac that you want to keep, you'll need to start with at least two full backups on two separate external HDs, because you'll have to erase the internal, reinstall OSX, and put your data back (that may be rather tedious).
What version of OSX is your Mac running?

  • How can I transfer my iphoto library from a Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) harddrive to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) hard drive?

    Community,
Every time I try to transfer my iphoto library from a Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) harddrive to a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) hard drive, I receive the attached message: "You can't copy 'iPhoto Library' because it has the same name as another ideon on the destination volume, and that volume doesn't destinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames."
My theory is, if I am able to unpackage my iphoto library, I can transfer each folder one at a time so that I can trouble shoot any "duplicates." Will this work?
Let's say that works. How can I repackage the library so iphoto recognizes it?
    Is there a better way?
    Thank you,
    Jonathan

Can we assume that I don't have any naming conflicts? Clearly there are or else I wouldn't get the error I'm getting.
The error doesn't mean you have name conflicts. It means that the Finder won't take the chance that you might have them.
You're suggesting that all I would need to do would be to use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer the files from the case-sensative harddrive to my Extended Journaled harddrive?
Yes. But I would just use the built-in rsync shell command. First, back up all data if you haven't already done so. Launch the Terminal application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press the space bar:
    rsync -aE --delete
Now drag the iPhoto library you want to copy into the window. You should have something like this:
    rsync -aE --delete /Users/you/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library
Drag the Pictures folder on the destination volume into the window. Now you have this (line will wrap on the page):
rsync -aE --delete /Users/you/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library /Volumes/something/Users/you/Pictures
Press return. The copying operation will start. When it finishes, you'll see a new dollar-sign ("$") prompt below what you entered. If there were no errors, you're done.

  • Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled)

Why i can't find the external HDD plugged to airport extreme. i already format it with mac OS extended (journaled).
Does only certain branch of HDD can be connected to aireport extreme?
I collect some information and i knew i have to partiion the HDD into Mac OS extended (journaled),
and i did so. Still the usb HDD cannot be found.
The other question is, can i partition the HDD into two sections, one of it is Mac OS extended(journaled) while the other is Fat32?
I want to share Fat32 section with another PC with windows system.
Thanks a lot if you have any suggestions.

I had tried to set up the connection via usinb a powered usb hub as the bridge between external HDD and the airport extreme. i still cannot found the HDD in the "airport utilities".
    This is my setting.
    1. Set airport extreme  as "sharing-single-ip" mode. The wireless network functions correctly.
    2. Connect external HDD to MBA. Partition it into single-partition with Mac OS extended (journaled).
    3. The HDD can be found if i plugged it directly to my MBA.
    4. Connect a powered usb hub to airport extreme.
    5. Connect external HDD to the powered usb hub.
    6. Open airport utilities.
         a. Select "airport extreme" in the sidebar.
         b. Change the "Disks" sheet.
    7. Cannot find an external Disk
    Is there any problem here?
Please help me. Thanks a lot!!

  • Network diagnostics is not accepting the WEP password on my wireless router. I know the password is case sensitive and was very careful in entering it but it still gives me the "Unable to join Wi-Fi Network" error message.

I need help setting up the wireless router for my iMac. I did not know the WEP password when I first turned it on to set things up. Now that I know the WEP password I cant get Network Diagnostics to accept it. I know it is case sensitive and was very careful when I entered the password. What should I do?

Hi, unfortunately WEP is about as secure as a bar of gold lent to a Gang Den! It can be broken in under 30 seconds these days!
If the PW is ASCII, try enclosing it in qoute marks, if Hex try preceding it with the & or % sign.
Also, is the Router set to only allow connect ion to MAC addies of the Interface?

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • Formatting HDs to Mac OS Extended: Does Partition Map Scheme need altering as well?

Most people know that third party hard drives need reformatting to Mac OS Extended before use but nobody seems to mention the Partition Map Scheme which is somewhat hidden away in Disk Utility.
When reformatting a drive is it sufficient to just set it to Mac OS Extended or does the Partition Map Scheme need to be reset to GUID or another of the Apple ones? (I believe GUID has to be used if you want to make the drive bootable  .  .  .  but most of the time you don't).
What problems, if any,  will arise if the PMS is not altered?

I frequently use FAT for externals, and there are no problems. You are right that GUID is required for booting, but that's about it. If I recall correctly though, a GUID partition map is much more efficient, so whenever I can use it I do.
One thing to note is that Windows XP and prior versions of Windows do not like GUID, and any version of Windows, including current Windows 7, will only see the first partition on a GUID formatted drive.

  • Disk Utilty - Reformating Windows-formated drive to MAC OS Extended Format

Can a drive previously formatted as Windows FAT32 or NFTS subsequently be reformatted to the MAC OS Extended format, via OS X Panther Disk Utility's Erase and/or Partition options?
If so, is it straightforward to do, or are there any potential pitfalls?

Hello! Yes, it should work fine to use disk utility to format the drive to HFS+. Tom

  • HT201250 reformat FAT-formatted drive in Mac OS Extended

I am using an external disc to backup my whole Mac, using Time Machine. I want to include in the back-up another external hard dirk INTENSO where I am already saving lots of pictures. Time Machine tells me that I can not include it in the back-ups because it is formatted for Windows (FAT32).
How can I format it for Mac? I know I would delete all the existing files so I need to make firstly a copy of them. THANKS

Open Disk Utility, and follow the sequence in the pictures below. Please note that step 2 is in the last picture.

  • Case sensitive and case insensitive Search

    Hi friends,
Iam doing an Search RFC which will search records based on the search parameters provided at the portal side.
One of the search parameter is a field with 40 character which holds the description(title) of the record.
With this search paramter iam facing case sensitive problem.
    Example:
Values in Database Table: ( Can be in any case)
           Record 1:  Sensitive
           Record 2:  SENSITIVE
           Record 3:  SensTive
           Record 4:  sensitive
           Record 5:  sensTive
         Input to RFC:  sens*
Output: Getting only 4rth and 5th record but not all the records.
The same is the case with the remaining search parameters(Like user name..).
Is there any way of getting all the records when searching from the data base (with case insensitive).
Kindly let me know if there is any possibility.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Swarna Munukoti.

Generally, no.  So, you'll either have to use EXEC SQL, or add more fields to the table.  You can do this using APPEND structures, which is the SAP approved way of adding fields.  If there are suitable user exits in the standard SAP code, then you'll be able to populate the additional fields there, as new records are created, or amended.
Alternatively, create your own Z table with the same key as the standard table and a "search field" which contains the uppercase version of the field you're wanting to search.  You can either, again populate in suitable user exits, or, in worst case, have job that runs regularly populating your Z table.

  • Username - case sensitivity and embeded period

I have been asked to investigate the impact of syncing our oracle user names with our AD names .. which would mean putting a period (dot) in the username. (example - john.doe). First attempt to create one returned an error which lead to the following testing:
