HT5096 There is no "ignore ownership" checkbox in Mountain Lion. Where do I set it?

Where is the “ignore ownership” checkbox at the bottom?

You don't need to ignore ownership to do that.

Is there a way of using IE7 with Mountain Lion? There used to be this facility using Safari "Develop" with Lion, but this doesn't seem to work with ML

Thank you for this, and to Caleb.
I've tried using Caleb's approach (which is the same as I used with Lion), but the programme doesn't respond now that I have installed Mountain Lion.
My problem is that I do not want to use IE7 but that a programme I need regular access to will only allow IE7 and I've been told by the developers that it is too expensive to upgrade this programme to allow it to be used by other browsers.
So, my puzzle remains the same. I could access IE7 and use the programme using Caleb's solution with Lion. I can't do the same with Mountain Lion. I do (I think!) understand your point about the programme requiring IE7 specifically, but if it worked on Lion, why isn't it working on Mountain Lion? Or was I just lucky before?
I'll try mende1's approach, though I doubt I'm technical enough to virtualise anything!
Thanks again. Any further thoughts welcome.

  • Is there any way I can still get Mountain lion 10.8?

I never knew that that Macbook Pros could have iMessage until now. Am I a little to late to get OS Mountain lion 10.8 since OS X Mavericks is out. So is there anyway I can get OS Mountain Lion. Also without OS Mountain Lion 10.8 you can not get OS X Mavericks.

False. You can upgrade to Mavericks from OS X 10.6.8 ( Snow Leopard ) if your Mac supports it.

  • Why is there no Passwords tab in my Safari Mountain Lion Preferences?

I need to remove a stored password from my laptop, but there is no Passwords tab in my Safari Mountain Lion Preferences window. How can I get past this roadblock?

Do you have some other software installed, like a password manager, that is removing the Passwords tab?
Take a look in Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access. Your password may be stored in there. Look in the Login Keychain, Category: Passwords. You can just select the password and delete it.
You could reinstall Safari perhaps to restore the Passwords tab. I don't think you can just download Safari by itself, though. You'd have to reinstall Mountain Lion. Alternatively there's an app called Pacifist that will let you extract the Safari installer package from the ML installer. CharlesSoft — software you always wished someone would write

  • Is there a way to refresh Messages in Mountain Lion?

I have noticed a reoccurring issue in regards to the Messages app in Mountain Lion. It often times does not sync messages correctly. Or sometimes it has a long delay for receiving messages, and out of order. The messages app for ios has a pull down to refresh option, is there any similar feature for the Mac OS version? If there currently is how do you force a refresh?

    HI,
At present the Out of Order iMessages is a "known Issue".
The current best "fix" is to relaunch the app after an sync period has caught up.

  • I want to upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion. Seems the app store only allows the new Maverick to be downloaded. Is there is a link to still install Mountain Lion?

I upgraded a couple weeks ago on my macbook pro, and now that Mavericks is out, it seems one can't install anything but the latest. Some of my apps aren't yet compatible and I need to wait. I have a 2009 MacPro.
    Thanks, any help appreciated.

Call 800 MY APPLE and get sales support. They can work it out. It is still possible to purchase Mountain Lion, they send you various emails and links to do so. It costs $19.95.
In my case, I had purchased it for another computer, I was told if I go to purchases at the App Store, there it is, and I can download it to the one that needs it. It's that simple.

  • Is there a way to get rid of Mountain Lion and return to Snow Leopard?

Eversince apple replaced my hard drive due to a recall and I installed mountain lion because it was touted as the greatest, i have been greatly disappointed. My system has slowed to a crawl, and there's just too much going on. I don't see the benefit and feel ripped off.

Restore your backup. (The one you made prior to replacing the operating system)

  • HT5096 Can't "uncheck" "ignore ownership" in step 6

I'm trying to follow the above article to copy my existing TM backups from my NAS to a new local external drive, dedicated to TM backups.
In step 6 it states that I should ensure the new drive has the "ignore onwership on this volume" checkbox UNCHECKED.  I cannot do this because the box appears as checked, but greyed out.
How to enable this checkbox to uncheck it?
    Thanks,
    Geoff

  • Is there a known USB 3 issue with Mountain Lion?

I have a 17-inch early 2008 MBP which only supports USB 2.0. My external hard drive, WD My Essentials 2TB has USB 3.0 connection but it worked fine with Lion. After upgrading to ML, it doesn't recognize the drive at all. Is there a firmware update coming which would allow older machines to operate USB 3 devices on ML?

Try both of these, the SMC reset is the most important:
    SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    PRAM:
    i. Ensure the machine is powered off.
ii. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
iii. Press the ‘power on’ button.
iv. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    v. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally.

  • There is no java virtual machine in Mountain Lion?

I try to access a .jar file typing "java -jar <file name> in Terminal, but I received the following message:
"Could not create the Java virtual machine"
    Some help, please.

OK, David, thank you very much. The default version is Java 6, but Java 7 appears as the version to be used with Safari and Firefox (but not with Chrome, as this one is 32 bit based).
One can see that version 7 is installed in the System Preferences, as shown in the window.
How do I know if I have Java installed on my Mac?
Mac OS X 10.6 and below: Apple's Java comes pre-installed with your Mac OS.
Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and above: Java is not pre-installed with Mac OS X versions 10.7 and above. To get the latest Java 7 from Oracle, you will need Mac OS X 10.7.3 and above.
If you have Java 7, you will see a Java icon under System Preferences.
Java versions 6 and below are listed in the Java Preferences.app located in the Applications > Utilities folder on your Mac.

  • Will there be problems on my iMac on Mountain Lion if I upgrade to Maverick?

Except for two times that my iMac on Mountain Lion froze completely recently, my iMac has been working just great. I am concerned that upgrading to Maverick might cause problems. Any suggestions?

We have not way of knowing that. If you have no particular need to upgrade, then I suggest you don't bother. You can always get an external hard drive and install Mavericks on it so you can see if you really want to upgrade. Or you can clone your existing internal HDD to a backup drive. Then you can upgrade one. If you aren't happy you still have your old system.

Please help! I've been searching for the solution why my built in camera doesn't recognized after some updated just a few days ago. I have a macbook air mid 2012 and my operating system is OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Will my mac camera work again if I upgrade it to mavericks? Please give me solution. Thanks!
    -Sarah

The upgrade to 10.9 is not a cure for your issue.  Use Apple's troubleshooting article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 to be certain your problem is not application or user specific.
If your problem is the same with both Apple and third party camera apps in every user account you test, use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions and then download and apply the latest Combo Update.  For your Mac OS 10.8.5, the current Combo is at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1676.
Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble remains after using the latest combo update, Reinstall OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Is there a Pages 09 only update for Mountain Lion?

I have downloaded the iWork 9.2 update for Mountain Lion but can't use it as I have Pages 09 but Numbers and Keynote 08 and the update says the 08's are not compatible. I bought Pages 09 from the App store as a stand-alone, so surely I should be able to upgrade it on its own without Numbers and Keynote?

Are you using iCloud? Some of the initial sluggishness may be due to the initial screen referencing iCloud:

  • HT1338 Is there any way to get OS X Mountain Lion on my version 10.5.8 MacBook?

I have an older MacBook, and a brand new iPhone 5c. I am having problems syncing them because I cannot download the new iTunes because my software is too old. Somebody help!

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
