HT5139 Is this really the only way to back up service settings?

Am I completely missing something here, or is Time Machine supposed to be the only easy way to back up service settings in Mountain Lion with Server.app? Is there really no way to export/import service settings anymore? It sounds to me from what I've read and seen of Server.app that if, for example, my DHCP settings get mucked up, I have to take the entire server offline, boot to the recovery partition, and restore from Time Machine? I can't just stop that ONE service and re-import the settings while leaving everything else up and running for 100+ users? Someone please tell me I'm missing something obvious.

Which service?
The "serveradmin" command line controls are always available. They can do much more than the GUI can.

  • Is this really the only way to download a CD to iTunes? It's way too slow...

Hi, I have tons of CDs I want to upload into iTunes using my new Dell computer. I just inserted my first CD. It has 11 songs and says it will take 39.8 minutes and is taking as long to download each song as it does to listen to it. This is not going to be possible to do with hundreds of CDs I have. Should I go back to using my Microsoft Media Player? That takes just a few seconds to download on. I don't understand why iTunes takes for eternity....been over 20 minutes barely through the first half of the fist CD...will take years at this pace. Thoughts??? Did you go through this too? I already give up after midway through my first CD, can't use itunes if it's going to take this long to transfer my music onto it...

So...basically I just want to know if this is normal, to take this long to transfer music onto iTunes.
    1. It took 40 minutes to upload a 40 minute CD onto iTunes.
    2. It is taking equally long to transfer music that I drag from my Microsoft music library onto iTunes. I started doing this hours ago today and am only on the 4th CD (have hundreds so how long is this going to take? Is it normal to take this long?)
I had Microsoft Music on my old Dell computer from 2001, I NEVER had to update it, and it took seconds to upload each song, not minutes like iTunes....and that was on my old computer...I just bought a new one I'm using, had to re-install iTunes to the latest version and for the first time downloading CD/s/existing music onto it and it's taking forever. Is it because of the latest 10.5 version? Is it normal? Is everyone else experiencing this? Is it a problem with my computer or iTunes setting? Am I doing something wrong? Please if anyone can share their experience for my reference I would really appreciate it, thanks.

If this is regarding your information line that says a stolen iPhone, Apple can do nothing to help you.  You must track the iPhone yourself using iCloud and must have turned on Settings > iCloud > Find My Phone before it was stolen.  If that was not done, there is no way to track the iPhone.
Report the theft to the police and the cell service provider and ask if they can blacklist the iPhone so it cannot be used.  Change all passwords associated with acconts on the iPhone.

  • Disable opportunistic locking on Server 2012 R2 - Is downgrading to SMBv1 really the only way?

We have an application that uses an Omnis 7 datafile (a service-less, Access-like database, from what I understand).  The application vendor has told us that opportunistic locking must be turned off on the server hosting or the clients accessing the
datafile, or there is a greatly increased risk of corruption of the Omnis datafile.
We are migrating some applications from a 2003 server to a 2012 R2 server, including this datafile.  I have read about opportunistic locking on 2012 R2.  It seems opportunistic locking is hard-coded into both SMBv2 and SMBv3 and there is no way
to disable it without disabling SMBv2 or SMBv3.  Is this true?  Is there truly no other solution for this but to downgrade my server to use only SMBv1?

    Hi Scott,
As you said we cannot disable Opportunistic locking in using SMB2 or SMB3.
    See:
    https://login.live.com/kb/296264/en-us
•The opportunistic locking registry keys are valid only for traditional SMB (SMB1). You cannot turn off opportunistic locking for SMB2.
From your description it is the limitation of the application - SMB2 comes with Windows Vista /Windows 2008, which means the vendor of the application did not recommend to use SMB2 or the application is released for earlier systems while SMB2 is not available
    at that time.
You can confirm with the vendor to see if any upgrade version of that app which is suitable for newer operation systems.

  • Is this really the best way Adobe can find to help customers - ask a bunch of stingers?

Adobe has a number of ways to help customers... I don't think one could be considered best compared to others... though the one that gives the help that's needed could be considered good enough.  Do you need help?

Yes, it will do no harm, but it is meant for trouble shooting and you should not have to use it all the time.

  • Is this still the only way to view Xvid and DivX movies on ATV?

By removing the drive and ssh'ing into it to add the codec support. Has anyone come up with a simpler solution that is less techie and complicated?
    Thanks

Correct. I ended up opting the other route to convert the divx movies to h.264 compressed MP4's which work natively...took about two weeks of processing time across three systems to convert the library but works without any issues now.

  • Hide field using a different configuration, is this the only way?.

I know that I can control which configuration is used by inserting code into the do_config_determination method, but is that really the only way?. I don't want to have to even more copies of the configuation showing or not showing this particular field. Surely there must be a way of hiding the field within this method without changing the configuation set being used?.
I just can't believe that there is no way around this.
Now I know that using standard configuration can take care of this, but what if you had a screen with lets say 30 fields or which 5 are dynamic, in other words are either diplayed or to be hidden. The combination of on and off states for these 5 fields being either displayed or hidden would mean that you would gradually build a huge number of screen configurations. Hence the need to hide via coding. Does that seem logical?

One of the suggested solutions was to create one line views and display them beneath the main view. We can the determine (via code) whether these views are displayed via view sets. This in effect allows us to have multiple fields that can be either displayed or hidden depending on some kind of routine/logic.

  • Is this REALLY the easiest/best way to do this?

I'm no SQL guru by any means, but I can get by. Here is some background.
I am running Perfmon Data Collector Sets to collect performance counters.
I am using Relog.exe to take the .blg files and pushing them into a database
I am attempting to write a query that will ultimately get the information out of the database and see if I can aggregate the data a bit as well. If the last part is better off doing in Excel (where this data will ultimately end up for charting), then I will
    do that part there.
Here is the table layouts when you import the .blg files:
    Table name: CounterData
    Columns:
    GUID
    CounterID
    RecordIndex
    CounterDateTime
    CounterValue
    FirstValueA
    FirstValueB
    SecondValueA
    SecondValueB
    MultiCount
    Table Name: CounterDetails
    CounterID
    MachineName
    ObjectName
    CounterName
    CounterType
    DefaultScale
    InstanceName
    InstanceIndex
    ParentName
    ParentObjectID
    TimeBaseA
    TimeBaseB
I need to pull multiple sets of data out of these tables, so I built the following query:
    USE PDB
    SELECT
CAST(LEFT(CounterDateTime, 16) as smalldatetime) AS CounterDateTime,
    REPLACE(CounterDetails.MachineName,'\\','') AS ComputerName,
    CounterDetails.ObjectName + ISNULL('(' + CounterDetails.InstanceName + ')','') + '\' + CounterDetails.CounterName AS [Counter],
    CounterData.CounterValue
    FROM CounterData
FULL OUTER JOIN CounterDetails ON CounterData.CounterID = CounterDetails.CounterID
FULL OUTER JOIN DisplayToID ON CounterData.GUID = DisplayToID.GUID
    WHERE CounterDetails.ObjectName = 'Processor'
    AND CounterDetails.CounterName = '% Processor Time'
    AND CounterDetails.InstanceName = '_Total'
    UNION
    SELECT
CAST(LEFT(CounterDateTime, 16) as smalldatetime) AS CounterDateTime,
    REPLACE(CounterDetails.MachineName,'\\','') AS ComputerName,
    CounterDetails.ObjectName + ISNULL('(' + CounterDetails.InstanceName + ')','') + '\' + CounterDetails.CounterName AS [Counter],
    CounterData.CounterValue
    FROM CounterData
FULL OUTER JOIN CounterDetails ON CounterData.CounterID = CounterDetails.CounterID
FULL OUTER JOIN DisplayToID ON CounterData.GUID = DisplayToID.GUID
    WHERE CounterDetails.ObjectName = 'Web Service'
    AND CounterDetails.CounterName = 'Bytes Received/sec'
    AND CounterDetails.InstanceName = 'AppName'
    ORDER BY 1
Is this REALLY the best way to do this?
Also, trying to figure out how to build in data aggregation in 5 minute average blocks.
    Any assistance appreciated!

    Erland,
    Thanks for your response.
The related items in the table are CounterID, in a nutshell, what I want to do is the following:
Get the data from the CounterDetails table that holds the MachineName, CounterName, CounterType and so forth.
CounterID MachineName ObjectName CounterName CounterType DefaultScale InstanceName InstanceIndex ParentName ParentObjectID TimeBaseA TimeBaseB

  • When I try to instal latest version of iTunes onto my computer I get error messages, and then the only way for me to access iTunes is to do a System Restore to and earlier restore point

When I try to install the latest version of iTunes, during the installation I get error messages saying that a program is trying to change registry and the installation is stopped.
After this happens the only way that I can open iTunes is to do a 'system restore' to an earlier time.
Has anyone else experienced this and can you help?

Could you please post the exact text of the error message or provide a screenshot?
There is advice on issues with the update at  Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. One of the entries in the further information section refers to a possible registry permissions problem which might be what you are seeing.

I delete one of the purchased apps. Then I go to the App Store and re-download and install the same app. After that, all my apps work again.
    Please help.

Download/install an app is a know possible solution.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If all user-installed apps are not launching, it could be an Apple ID authorization issue. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information.
Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.

  • How do I stop Firefox from creating untitled web pages when I try to send email from a web page. The only way I have found is to turn the computor off and then reboot. I don't have this problem when using Internet Explorer

Every time I click on a web site that has an email option the browser starts making untitled web pages and never stops unless I turn the computer off. It is very frustrating to not be able to use an email option when offered by a web site. The only way I can send email messages on the Firefox browser is to go into my hotmail acct. and copy and paste the addresses. I don't have this problem when I use the Internet Explorer browser.
