• Hard Drive not permitted for Startup install

Snow Leopard tells me that my Hard Drive can not be used for a startup disk, but doesn't say why . My OS 10.5 startup and all files are on this drive, except for Time Machine which is on an external drive. and there are two other external drives which contain a backup copy of my Hard Drive, and the library for another application.
I follow the instructions to repair the Startup drive with TM, but nothing changes after I do that. It still tells me I can't use the Hard Drive to install SL. I tried ejecting the external drives and TM, so the only remaining drive the computer sees is the HD, but it still says HD cannot be used. I am going in circles and stumped. Can someone tell me where to go next?

Take a look at this article:
[Snow Leopard cannot be installed on Macintosh HD the disk 'cannot be used to start up your computer'|http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10330520-263.html]
It includes the following:
This problem happens because the Snow Leopard installer detects a small discrepancy in the partition table of the drive, and assumes booting off the drive may not be successful. The fixes involve rewriting the table without formatting the drive, but if that does not work then formatting should definitely work (provided you have a backup).
Fixes:
1. Run drive checks.
The first thing to do is run Disk Utility or, even better, run a third-party utility program to check out the drive to ensure it is functioning correctly. Fixing any errors may require booting off a volume other than the boot volume (i.e., the Snow Leopard DVD or a Drive Genius DVD), and performing the fixes from there.
2. Repartition the drive.
This problem might happen even if the drive checks out with various disk utility software. The way around this is to have Disk Utility repartition the drive, which, luckily, can be done without having to format the drive. To do this, boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and select your language. Then launch "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" menu and perform the following steps:
1. Select your boot device (the device above the boot volume name), and select the "Partition" tab.
2. Resize the partition by selecting the volume name in the rectangular volume representation and drag the bottom-right corner of it to change its size.
3. Click "Apply" to change the partition's size.
4. Revert the change by dragging the same resizing corner back to the bottom, and click "apply."
After this is done, quit out of Disk Utility and try installing Snow Leopard again. Since you are booted from the Snow Leopard DVD you should be able to continue immediately without having to reboot your system.
Also see this very long forum thread here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2130966.
Be sure you have a backup before trying any of this.

• Chown: changing ownership of u01: operation not permitted.

Hi
I am dual booting Window 8 and Oracle Linux 6 on my system. Both OS is working perfectly. I have one NTFS partition "/dev/sda4" which gets mounted with no issues, when using mount command.
In my / directory of linux system I have created u01 folder. I changed the ownership of this u01 folder from root:root to oracle:oinstall (oracle user and oinstall group). Now when I am mounting /dev/sda4 to u01 using:
sudo mount /dev/sda4 /u01
It is getting mounted perfectly but the ownership of u01 is getting changed from oracle:oinstall to root:root again.
Now I am trying to change it back to oracle:oinstall using:
sudo chown oracle:oinstall /u01
But it is showing error: "chown: changing ownership of u01: operation not permitted. "
Note: My username is oracle and group is oinstall. I have put oracle user in /etc/sudoers file:
oracle ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL
Thanks
Nitish

Dude,
Actually I wanted to install oracle database in my linux system. I thought of putting database binaries in my NTFS partition. Everything was worknig fine. I was able to install oracle database such that the binaries are in NTFS partition.
The only problem was that I was not able to change ownership from root:root to oracle:oinstall. This is recommended by Oracle.
It doesnt matter you are root user or any user you wont be able to change ownsership.
I found out the probelm. Thing is that, no user can change ownership of NTFS or FAT system. It will always be mounted as root:root. I formatted the partition in EXT2 format and mounted it to /u01 folder. It was root:root then I changed it to oracle:oinstall by chown command and it was successfull.
If you have any other idea or workaround please let me know.
Thanks

although, it seems that the OES admin server is up since i am able to access the OES admin console.
i have tried playing around the policies to grant the "weblogic" the priviliges for an Admin but is still get the same issue. Although, when i try to distribute the changes in the policy, "ASI ( Policy for entire Oracle Entitlements Server system ) " still appears in the list of changes.
any thoughts on what the problem is? is there a way to force the distribution of the policy? maybe through the command prompt or other console?
Edited by: user9056644 on Mar 5, 2010 12:02 AM

Have you applied CP2 or CP3 to OES? There were enhancements that allows these policies to be scoped within an organization. I only ask to help guide you on distributing policies for the runtime WLS domain. The ASI domain is only for the admin. There should have been a set of resources and policies created as a result of running ConfigTool for your new instance (looks like you named it 'wls'). If no CP, it will be in DefaultApp next to ASI.
You have to distribute policies for 'wls' immediately following running ConfigTool before starting WebLogic or you will put it into a state where it can't be started. The corrective action is to remove the state.ck file under C:\BEA_HOME_10/ales32-ssm/wls-ssm/instance/wls_ssm/work/runtime, distribute policies, restart WebLogic.
If you need to re-run ConfigTool (after installing CP for instance), revert the following files:
<domain>/config/config.xml
<domain>/bin/startWebLogic.sh | .cmd
Revert from the no-ales backups created. Remove the instance folder under C:\BEA_HOME_10\ales32-ssm/wls-ssm/instance. You can then re-run ConfigTool if you have to.

Hmm I haven't seen so many errors either.
the number of errors is not high at all. Leopard would very often produce at least 3 to 4 times as many.
It could have something to do with me running snow leopard on a Macbook Pro 2.16 core duo and not a core 2 duo... ?
no, that would not have anything to do with it. as i said, those are most likely just errors in the permissions database. as i said, leopard was notorious for those. snow leopard is not as bad but produces a number of them too. I just haven't seen this particular kind of messages before. reinstalling SL will fix them but it seems like a serious overkill in this case.

• Mac OS X 10.6.8, receiving error message "Failed to check for updates. The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted." How to fix?

When I try to update my software, I'm receiving the error message "Failed to check for updates. The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted."
I'm using Safari 4.0.3. Yes, I know this is an old version of Safari - I can't update it, or any other software on my MacBook. Should I just wait for the Lion OS, or is there any kind of fix a non-technical Mac user like me can attempt without screwing up her laptop?
I've tried clearing my cache and resetting Safari already - doesn't help. I've also tried to update after disabling my (Norton) antivirus software, thinking that might be interfering. None of these help.
I don't know if it's a related problem, but also I can't download .pdf files from the internet, although I used to be able to.

You should use the NortonAV uninstaller to uninstall it. Disabling the dreadful thing in the past hasn't always been sufficient for it to cease creating system havoc. The Mac NortonAV version has a long and well-earned reputation for doing truly seriously nasty things to OS X. Shame on Comcast for inflicting NortonAV on its Mac customers. It's not a matter of if NortonAV will mess up OS X but when and how badly. I can't help but wondering if some setting in your Norton AV has decided that NortonAV, rather than you, will be making executive decisions about what you are allowed to install on your computer and is keeping that fact a secret.
After you are done uninstalling Norton use the finder to search for any Norton files that the uninstaller might have missed. Add the option to search for invisible files.
After you have removed all the Norton bits and pieces restart in safe mode by holding down the shift key right after the startup chime. Keep holding down the shift key until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Safe mode does some maintenance tasks which means a much longer than normal startup time. Use Disk Utility to repair permission
If your Mac works normally in safe mode restart. If things still aren't fixed you might want to give another shot at reinstalling Snow Leopard from the install DVD and applying the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo before taking your Mac to the Apple Store.

I've retrieved a download application in zip file format. During download, a message appears that states decompression failed. When I try to open the file, I get a message that the operation is not permitted. How do I correct this situation?

Make sure the place you are downloading the zip file isn't using a password protected zip file.
What operating system are you using?
Have you installed any decompresison software, or are you using the system built-in software?
Where are you downloading the application from?
Is your data backed up?
Are you using any firewall software or system optimization software, or any browser addon software?

The Apple Configurator tool robbed my school of @ 60×4 apps.
Here's my mistake. I bought all the apps needed for the whole school in one lump sum. i.e. 350 copies of Pages. Then happily went to Configurator and loaded the spreadsheet. Installed on all the student iPads. Then need the remaining licenses to gift to the teachers and @ 30 for the cart. NOPE! Once they are loaded in to Configurator you can never get them back. Apple said, “sorry”.
I did this for the iWorks suite, iPhoto, & neu.Annotate before I realized what was happening.
This is what to do, in short. From the VPP account, buy the number needed for exactly what you need, just make sure, it's over 20, even if you only need 11, 20 copies is cheaper than 11 because they are half off at 20 or more. Get the spreadsheet generated by the VPP site for the 20 then buy for the next cart or site, it will generate a new spreadsheet of 20 you can give to the computer and its copy of Configurator.

• Cannot start weblogic 8.1 User is not permitted to boot the server

Hi,
Sorry to cross-post, but I didn't seem to get any feedback on this in the 'security' newsgroup.
I have installed Weblogic 8.1SP3 on two identical workstations as well as deployed our application. On one server WL8.1 starts up fine. On another, it says "BEA-090404 user weblogic 8.1 is not permitted to boot the server".
The OS'es are identical: Windows XP Pro SP2.
The only difference I can think of: one is logged into a windows-domain, the other directly onto the PC.
I've ran diffs-ignoring-whitespace (i.e. diff -w) on the important-looking files (.ldift and config.xml) and don't see any differences that would warrant such difference.
Any suggestions?
thanks,
bill

when you installed the WLS , which admin user did you >create ?Admin user 'weblogic'. Actually someon did this long ago and checked in the generated config files (boot.properties) into our source tree?
So, in which mode do you start the WLS ? development or >production ?This I don't know.
Our setup is as follows:
1) We install weblogic (server only)
2) Run our ant scripts
3) Ant populates and deploys the config files and pe.ear file to a new domain.
4) we start weblogic from a script in that domain: startWeblogic.cmd
<Jul 20, 2007 8:17:35 AM CDT> <Info> <Configuration Management> <BEA-150016> <This server is being started as the administration server.>
<Jul 20, 2007 8:17:35 AM CDT> <Info> <Management>
We use a few app servers and use a similar paradigm: install, deploy from build tree, start from script.
My question: where do you specify that 'user weblogic is member of the administrator group' ?

• Changes to repository not permitted

Hi
I installed SAP ides 4.7 recently. I created a new user becuse DDIC doesnot allow us to do any changes or customizations. Then i tried to create a new program or change with ABAP editor it is giving me an error says that" Changes to repository or cross-client customization is not permitted".
what does it mean and what should i do to create new ABAP program and execute.
And also can any one pl let me know how to clear the user varibles in logon screen.
Is there any other existing user which i can use for login and create new ABAP programs like universal user or something.
I am new to ABAP.
Thanks alot
Madhu

Then i tried to create a new program or change with ABAP editor it is giving me an error says that" Changes to repository or cross-client customization is not permitted". what does it mean and what should i do to create new ABAP program and execute.
It means that the client is not set up for changing/creating independent objects. ABAP program is client independent/cross client object. To fix this issue, Go to SPRO and client management (Guess, transaction SCC4) . You can change option here to make changes to cross client objects. Look for SAP help if you need more detailed info.
Also I guess, IDES used to have standard user ids for Developer, Basis and other activities. Check the installation manual or SU01D for other user details. Check the user id 'DEVELOPER'. Otherwise you may endup with requirement of Developer Key.
Thanks

• -bash: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted

Hi all,
i´m preparing a linux 64bits environment to install Oracle 10g R2. I´m following the installation manual and there say that:
Depending on the oracle user's default shell, make the following changes to the default shell startup file:
For the Bourne, Bash, or Korn shell, add the following lines in the /etc/profile file (or the /etc/profile.local file on SUSE systems):
if [ $USER = "oracle" ]; then
if [ $SHELL = "/bin/ksh" ]; then
ulimit -p 16384
ulimit -n 65536
else
ulimit -u 16384 -n 65536
fi

Ok, I did it, so when execute the follow comand I get a error like this.
tetis:/etc # su - oracle
-bash: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted
oracle@tetis:~>
Can anybody help me ?
Regards,
Wander (Brazil)

The limits for -u and -n are defined in limits.conf, it looks like the -n section is not working (-u is already 16384), just to double check, show us the output for:
$ more /etc/security/limits.conf | grep oracle
oracle soft nproc 2047
oracle hard nproc 16384
oracle soft nofile 1024
oracle hard nofile 65536
$ more /etc/pam.d/login | grep pam_limits
session required pam_limits.soEnrique

• Operations not permitted

Hi
I have a MacBook Pro with a corrupted copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed on the HD (I say corrupted because if I try selecting the HD as the startup disk I'm locked at the pretty spinning gear screen). The problem started when I went a little OCD on system files and tried to make everything look pretty but accidentily deleted necessary things... IE... the entire utilities folder and what not... anyway I'm using my factory install disk with Snow Leopard 10.6.3 to run Disk Utility and Verify/Repair the permissions but I keep getting "operations not permitted", errors... I'm semi-comfortable in using the Terminal from my OS disk if anyone knows the commands necessary to fix the permission issues.
Any help is greatly appreciated -- I really don't want to lose my files (Silly me... I never used Time Machine or a external HD to backup anything important) and I'd like to have my Mac running smoothly!
Thanks so much,
Timothy

You should not be getting any kind of error message when trying to install, if you're booted from the DVD. I can't comment further on that without knowing what the message is.
As for backing up, you can do that within Disk Utility, but you should have done it long before now. If you don't make regular backups, you'll inevitably lose all your data.
