HT5244 how do I know whether my mac has the malware?

I've just installed the java fix, but I don't whether it's to late, ie whether the malware is already installed on my mac. Is there any way to check it, without buying an antivirus (cf. should be an advantage of the Mac so far). Cheers

I don't think common operating systems have an easy way to do that check.
If you have a limited number of files, implement access control yourself, instead of using operating system permissions. E.g. write a configuration file that contains:
# Syntax: "filename": "list of users who can access that file"
somefile.txt: fred, alice, bob
somedir/anotherfile.txt: bob, joe
Read in the configuration file and check against it when a file is being requested.

Hi, how can I tell if my dual processor 1.42 ghz fw800 mac has the Apple "quite kit"? I've had it with the loud noise now. I can hear the fans from other rooms.

Hi, and welcome to the Discussions!
Check the PSU. It should be a 360 watt model and not a 400 watt model. Also, the fans should be manufactured by Papst, not Sensflow. Here's a good link with info on this subject.
I am under the impression that the FW800 Macs all shipped with the quiet kits installed and that the mods were meant for the MDD Macs, though I could be wrong...

How do i know if my Mac has a virus? or any kind of malware? im running OS Mavericks.

I'm worried because one of my friends opened a website that seemed weird and i dont know if i could of gotten a virus or malware.

If your friend was using your Mac to visit this web site, you really should only allow your friend to use your Mac from the guest account. If you do that everything they do in the guest account will be erased when they log off you Mac. Also being on the guest account will prevent them from installing anything. That can really be helpful in preventing any such problems.
To do that just use Fast User Switching to login to the guest account and then give it to them.
My answer if they don't like that solution is to tell them to go find someone else's Mac to use then.

I have my current model MacBook Pro and new Airport Express up and running - no problems love it. It seams like a faster conntection but its always pretty subjective unless you run a test (which I am too lazy to do).
Does any one know how we you can tell whether the conntection is happening at b/g/ or n speeds. My windows machine tells me that is connection at using 802.11 G but I can't seem to find anywhere in the Airport utility or in MAC OS to show what mode it is connected in

I recently upgraded from Firefox 3.6.5 to Firefox 4.0.1 and status updates after pressing "Sync Now" which tell you that data sync is in progress or has finished, have STOPPED appearing. How do I know whether my data has been synced or not?

More specifically even when I click Tools->Sync Now nothing happens. Also when I do a "Reset Sync" via Tools->Options->Firefox Sync, nothing happens. Meaning no progress bar appears indicating that data is being synced or has been synced, as it used to happen in earlier versions of Firefox. Is there a way to know after pressing Sync Now that my data has been synced?

There is no visual representation to show that it has worked or is in progress, but if it fails you get a bar appearing at the bottom of the screen telling you that the sync failed.

So I got that warning of the RCMP virus..
It wouldn't let me close the window but eventually I did. Then I opened safari and it appeared again and I quickly closed it. I cleared my history and the website data from safari preferences.
Now I can go on safari and nothing comes up, but I'm wondering if the "virus" is still on my Mac? Will it steal my passwords and credit card information?

How are you creating the file, exactly?

Thanks. According to that webpage, my "Java is out of date." When an error message like that is returned, I guess it's clear that "it's a Java problem." Presumably, one would then just go to java.com and download the applet if he/she wanted to view the webpage.
I was wondering more about situation when unexplained problems that involved missing Java applets weren't noted in error messages.
But maybe I'm worrying about something that doesn't really need to be worried about.
