  • Trouble installing Windows 8.1 on MacBook Pro Retina mid 2014

    Hi everyone
I recently bought a MacBook Pro Retina (mid 2014, 15", 2.8GHz, 1TB SSD) and wanted to install Windows 8.1 on it via bootcamp.
I have an official .ISO package of Windows 8.1 (it's x64, I checked), got it from MS Dreamspark as a student, and a valid serial number for it, of course.
Burned the image on a 16gb flash drive via bootcamp and proceeded to install. When asked by windows installer which partition to install on, selected bootcamp and clicked 'format', as it was recommended to do in various instructions on the internet (as it wouldn't install without formatting, I tried). The installation went good and finished, but immedeatly after that the installer gave me a notification "Impossible to update computer loading configuration, installation cancelled" (maybe it's not exactly like that, translated as accurately as I could, I'm installing windows in Russian).
I tried it twice, each time re-burning the installation drive. Got the same error each time.
All the software (OS X, bootcamp, etc.) is up to date, the macbook shouldn't have any problems as it was bought just a few days ago.
How can I solve this problem?

  • What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

Looking for the best option here. What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

You should check your date of purchase against the manufacturer's warranty
or guaranty since some of those better brands have some recourse should
they fail within a specified time period. A good reason to save dated receipts.
Since solid-state USB drives probably don't (all) use a wear-leveling software
to equally utilize their recordable space evenly, it is possible that some of these
may exhibit a failure in some sector areas due to excessive over-writing. If the
ones you use do not have such a technology or an undercounted total capacity
with a means to automatically write in other sections, you may have to consider
manually using a disk utility to zero-overwrite and reformat them occasionally.
Even so, that may only help a marginal flash or thumb drive work a little longer.
Should a camera memory card fail you still may be able to attempt with margin of
success, to +recover image files+ from it. re: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
The standard default format they ship with works well for most file types; so if
you aren't moving OS X or Mac app specific files around on a USB flash drive,
the original format should be fine. Oh, you can use Disk Utility to attempt to do
a repair; but in some cases you may have to reformat them, etc.
    {Some of the flash drive warranties or guarantees may vary from between regions;
so if you have one with a '5 Year' guarantee in the US, other rules may apply in EU,
    or when you seek to replace an item under warranty outside of where it was bought.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What is the proper resolution to use with bootcamp and Windows 7 on a Macbook Pro Retina?

    Hi All,
Let me start by saying I have read numerous articles and blog posts about choosing the correct resolution to use when running Windows 7 via Bootcamp on a MacBook Pro Retina (15").  I have not found the "silver bullet" (correct resolution).  My eyes are sensitive to displays that are running in non-native resolutions (scaling).
When running the display in native resolution  (2880x1800) everything looks great, except that icons and text are way too small to read.  I have played with the zoom settings (150%, etc.).
When using any scaled resolutions, the display doesn't look as crisp and I get eye fatigue.  I have also tried Windows 8, with the same results (no surprise).
I would love to use this Macbook to run Windows 7 because the hardware is great, but it looks like I may have to switch back to Dell/Lenovo/HP.
Is there a proper or "best practice" resolution to run at in this scenario?  I want to give it one last try before putting the laptop away...
    Thanks for any help!
    Andrew

While I've never seen retina display, if you have not tried Hi-Contrast in Windows, you might find settings with it that are comforatable.
This is set with desktop rightclick->Personalize. You can vary desktop icon size in the View option above Personalize.
You can change most of what you see in Windows foreground/background colours & text with high contrast settings.
Also, text size in Windows browsers is variable with the Control an + and - key combo.
If the display you use is small maybe an external 24" or 27" monitor, if possible, would alleviate problem.
The attached pics are expadable by double click.

  • The best way to load software onto a MacBook Pro Retina?

Hi there I am new to a MacBook Pro Retina (as you know, without DVD drive) - when I recently purchased it I asked the Apple staff about loading external s/w and they said 'no problem'. I am still not sure how to do it - my desktop unit (with DVD drive) is a Windows PC. I have searched the forum and net for answers to what I thought would be a common issue for other users but no luck. I today bought Adobe Elements for Mac and want to install it. Any help gratefully received, many thanks, Sean

thanks very much Clinton - yes, good point re downloading s/w - unfortunately I live in a remote place in Australia and download speeds are such that often such downloads 'time out'. Also, we struggle to ever get any responses out of Adobe (I use PS etc) so it is a safer bet to buy the s/w on disc.
I did however learn of a way to install s/w remotely - from the excellent Apple Joint Venture crew and I should share it in case it is of help to others:
insert target s/w disc from which you want to install s/w in the PC's DVD drive
Click on the PC's 'Start' button, then 'Control Panel', then 'Harware and Sound' and then click on 'DVD/CD sharing options'
then tick box for 'Enable DVD or CD sharing' & untick box for 'Ask me before allwoing others to use my DVD drive'
Once that is done your MacBook Retina should see the device in its Finder under 'Other devices' and you can proceed to install the s/w from there. It certainly worked for me. It is like magic.
Hope I haven't missed any crucial steps but I am sure you get the drift! The main thing is that it can be done!
Now what I would like to do is to read songs off CDs placed in my PC DVD drive into iTunes on my MacBook . . . . . if only! Anyone know how???
    thanks, Sean

  • Windows 8.1 on MacBook Pro Retina late 2014 rendering

I bought a Macbook Pro with Retina Display a month ago and I decided I wanted to put windows on it. I could not find a downloadable windows 7 iso file and so I bought windows 8.1 and installed it via bootcamp. Well, I absolutely hate it. I wanted to use it to game a little but the rendering causes the games to slow down to almost unusable states. How do I fix this?

Is your rMBP a dual-GPU model, or does it only have the Intel Iris GPU?

  • Cannot install Windows 8.1 on Macbook Pro Retina Display

    Hello,
I am installing Windows 8.1 on my 15" Macbook with Retina Diaplay (I bought this in Easter) using the bootcamp.
The Windows 8.1 cannot be installed and said that the boot information cannot be changed and the Macbook hanged.
After switch off, then on again, even the OS X cannot be loaded, only a grey screen then switch off automatically.
Kindly could you please advise what is happening and what I can do?  Do I need to bring it to the Apple Shop to fix it?  Will they help me to install the Windows 8.1?
    Thanks.
    Kwong

Thanks, turbostar.  I will try that.
However, my question is I am using the 8.1 DVD to install, but how comes this does not work?  Also it stopped and saying that the boot information can't be changed.  What is happening?  I have checked that the partition is good and format for Windows, but still not working.  Sigh.

  • Can't install windows 8 on new macbook pro retina display.

I spent my afternoon trying to install Windows 8 Pro on my new Macbook Pro with retina display. I get fairly deep into the installation process using bootcamp when I get a windows message that says something to the effect that windows can't be installed because the hard drive is not formatted in NTSF format. And that is the end of the line.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It's normal. Boot Camp Assistant formats the Boot Camp volume in FAT32 because in the past it supported Windows XP and it could use FAT32. This changed with Windows Vista.
The only thing you have to do is to choose the BOOTCAMP partition in this step, and select "Drive options (advanced)". Then, press "Format" and it will be formatted into NTFS, so press Next and the installation will start.

  • Issues with installing windows on a new macbook pro retina.

    Hello,
First time using bootcamp on my new macbook and I am running into an issue.
I have read the troubleshooting guide and everything else and no matter what I do I get the same problem.
The issue is that when bootcamp restarts after partitioning my drive, windows loads and I start the install process. Its says set up is starting and then it says that a required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. I only have one usb drive connected (the one with windows on it) and nothing else. This is getting incredibly frustrating haha.

Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool  Windows  can be used with any VM
The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file on a USB flash drive or a DVD. To create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive, download the ISO file and then run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. Once this is done, you can install Windows 7 directly from the USB flash drive or DVD.

Install Windows 7 From USB Drive
Before you begin, you will require the following:
    USB Flash Drive (4GB minimum)
    Windows 7 ISO Image file
    UNetbootin
Note: If UNetbootin doesn’t work, try out the Microsoft’s official tool called Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool.
Note that resulting USB drives from UNetbootin are bootable only on PCs (not on Macs).

  • Black screen: Windows 8.1 on Macbook pro retina 2012

I've been sucessfull at installing Windows 8.1 on a USB 3 hard drive.
I can boot into Windows 8.1, but the moment I start installing the video drivers, the screen goes black (stays on, but doesn't output anything)
I've tried numerous times, each time with a different driver source:
bootcamp support software 5.0 (the one the bootcamp assistant copies to the install drive)
bootcamp support software 5.1.5621 (downloaded from the apple website)
    laptopvideo2go.com
    Windows update
    nVidia website
    Always the same problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thx
    Martijn

I should mention I installed Windows in gpt/uefi.
Therefor I believe the CSM reveals both the Intel HD4000 and the GT650M.
Both show up in the devicemanagement tool of Windows.
Maybe I have to disable the Intel GPU somehow?

  • What are the best Color "Display Settings" for both my Macbook Pro Retina and Thunderbolt Display??

I have recently purchased a Thunderbolt Display for my MBPr (early 2013) and was wondering what were the best settings for both to obtain an equal color and graphic appearance. I want to have them identical for working on graphics and illustrations.
    Thanks

I have the same laptop. There's nothing you really need to do to optimise the system. Perhaps just install the cuda drivers.
It runs premiere like a dream.

  • Best way to transfer from mid 2012 macbook pro retina to new mid 2014 macbook pro

I'm updating to a new 2014 macbook pro.  am i better off using a migration assistant from one to another, or restoring from Time Machine (with ethernet to thunderbolt adapter)?  Or some other method?

I have used the Setup Assistant during setup of OS X and I would use a current Time Machine back up to point to during Setup Assistant. I have also manually copied data and apps over from another Mac while on my network. Both take some time and both were equally successful.
So, you have a choice after backing up your current Mac:
Have both Macs on your network, run setup on your new Mac and afterwards manually copy files from the old to the new Mac.
Run setup on your new Mac and use the Setup Assistant to migrate from a Time Machine back up all your user accounts, data and settings.
Question on a similar line except I wanted to partition the drive that came on the new Mid 2014 MBPro (2.8 GHz, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM).  Migrating from the old computer b/u seems pretty straight forward, but once the drive that come with the new MBPro is partitioned an install of OS X needs to be done.  Here's what I did, I installed the Mavericks I had purchased from the App Store when it came out.  Now, from reading here in the Communities, some have indicated the shipped Mavericks version is not the same as the App Store version.  Now that the shipped Mavericks is history (after the partitioning) should I try somehow to restore that from the Recovery HD/process?  Or ???
This isn't my first rodeo, so I just went full speed ahead and did the partitioning and copied the former MBPro (early 2011) disk created by Carbon Copy Cloner over to the new boot partition.  It was suggested that an Erase and Install OS X could be done, but I don't see how that would bring the shipped Mavericks version for this new MBPro, unless the Recovery HD suite of utilities would go and grab that from Apple via Internet; which would be fairly lengthy since it would be via Internet connection.
I'll back up a bit here for a second... I"m not experiencing any problems (kernel panics, etc.) but not sure if the system now is as it should be.  Hindsight being what it is I should have made a CCC copy of the shipped volume of Mavericks; if this is an issue.
The system seems to be running fine, and some of my "issues" (for lack of a better term) could be just the way the new Mid 2014 MBPro is handling things - like memory allocation (i.e. using close to the 16 GB most of the time) and kernel_task using 1 GB of memory - more at times).  Possibly if I wasn't a regular watcher of Activity Monitor I would just be plodding along, since the system seems to be working fine.  Occasionally some apps or their processes take a longer than I feel is what should be normal to do, hence looking at the Activity Monitor to see what is going on.
Sorry for the long ramble.  Trying to see if I really have a problem that would necessitate a reinstall of Mavericks via Recovery HD; which could take up some valuable computer work time (which I'm also using posting here <grin>).
Thanks in advance for any ideas, suggesting, etc.  Also, to the person who posted to my other question on this another thanks for those suggestions.  None of which I've done - yet.
Take care all - and thank you again for  all the great minds who make these Community Boards work.

  • What hbmi cord do I need to connect my Macbook Pro retina display to a Windows desktop?

I'm trying to connect my Windows desktop to my Macbook Pro retina dispay so i can transfer CD's. ALthough I dont know what cord to get.

Your post is a little confusing. HDMI is for connecting video, like hooking your Mac to a TV. It sounds like you want to transfer files. If you have a wireless network, just share the folder with the music on your Windows machine and you should be able to copy it to your Mac.
