HT5278 1st generation ipad update

when will apple put an update out for 1st generation ipads??  Until then most apps will not work anymore etc.

Depending on what version of iOS you have there may be an update. Assuming you have iOS lower than 5 you'll need to connect your iPad to a Computer running iTuines (Can be a Mac or a Pc doesn't matter) and follow the update prompts.
You'll probably want to back up the iPad before updating though.
iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Scroll down to the section titled: Update your device using iTunes
You'll ony be able to update the iPad to a maximum of iOS 5.1.1  though if you don't already have it.
However before you do that, you may want to try and just perform a simple reset. If you haven't done this in a long time, the iPad can get stuffed up and develop minot glitches like freezing and crashing Apps.
Double click the home button to get to the Recently Used Apps Bar.  Hold down on one of the icons until it starts to wiggle, and then tap on the (x) in the corner to close them off.
Once you've closed them all, tap the home button to go back to normal mode. Then Hold down the Home and Sleep/power buttons until you see the Apple Logo. Ignore any sliders that may appear.  The iPad will perfomr the equivalent oif a reboot on a computer. This usually ehlps clears many unexplained glitches.

  • HT4623 Why can't my 1st generation iPad update to iOS 6?  Memory is not an issue.

Why can't my 1st generation iPad update to iOS 6 when memory is not an issue?

The first gen iPad has a slower processor (A4) than the iPad 2 (dual-core A5) and iPad 3 (dual-core A5X) and 4 (A6X), and it also has less memory - 256 meg, compared to the iPad 2's 512 meg and the iPad 3 and 4's 1024 meg. My first gen iPad got noticeably slower with iOS 5 than it was with iOS 4, so I doubt that it could cope with iOS 6.

  • HT5457 How do I update my 1st generation IPAD to IOS 5.1 and I do not have a software update feature on it.

I have a 1st generation IPAD and it is currently running IOS 4.3.  I would like to update it to IOS 5.1 but am having difficulty doing it.  I have followed the update software instructions in ITUNES but my IPAD will not display the update software feature under General in Setttings.  What do I need to do?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • 1st generation iPad running iOS 5.1.1 and can't seem to update the iOS.  Any ideas?

I currently have a 1st generation iPad that is running on iOS 5.1.1.  I have been unable to update the operating system.  In fact, when I look for updates under the general settings icon nothing comes up.  Shouldn't this older iPad be running on iOS 7.0.2 like my new iPad?  Also, I have 19 app updates that I can't even access.  I'm assuming this is because iOS 5.1.1 is too antiquated, thus not meeting the requirements for the other apps to update.  Thank you for any help or advice you can offer.

my ipad 1st gen when i go to update to ios 5.1.1 on itunes and run check update it says ios 4.2 is the furthest version? Please Help

  • HT4623 Can you update the 1st generation IPad to IOS 6?

Can I update my 1st generation IPad to IOS 6?

Sorry, no. iOS 5.1.1 is the highest possible for that model.

  • HT4623 Now that iOS is consistently being updated.  Will the 1st Generation IPad be stuck with IOS 5?  Eventually my IPad will be good for nothing as Apps start requiring the updated software.

The iPad 1 can only be updated to iOS 5.1.1. This is unlikely to change.
The apps you have will continue to work and there are still many apps which run on iOS 5 (or even earlier iOS levels).

  • I have an 1st generation ipad. I am unable to update the software beyond 5.1.1. Why?

I have an 1st generation ipad. I am unable to update the software beyond 5.1.1. Why? It tells me my software is up to date.

    Very possible.
You can often get the older version if you buy directly on the iPad
Go through the iTunes Store on your old iPad and purchase netflix, if you can get an older version of the app, iTunes will ask and prompt the download of older version.
Not all apps will be available.
I was able to put iBooks on my older iPod this way.

  • How do I update the operating software to current version. I have 1st generation ipad

Hi - how do I update to current operating system. I have 1st generation iPad.
    Thanks

What  version of iOS do you currently have on it : Settings > General > About > Version ? The first gen iPad only supports up to iOS 5.1.1, you can't install iOS 6 or 7 on it.
If it's on iOS 5+ but not 5.1.1 then you should be able to update to 5.1.1 directly on it via Settings > General > Software Update. If it's on iOS 4 then you can only update via your computer's iTunes. But before you do an update take a backup.
To update via a computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad via File > Devices > Back Up.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

  • HT4623 I have a 1st generation iPad &recently updated to iOS 5.1, but I can't find my AppStore app icon! Help!

I have a 1st generation iPad and recently updated to iOS 5. However, I can't find my AppStore app icon now. Like it's disappeared!
How do I get the icon back?

Do your have Restrictions turned on?  Settings>General.
If that's not it, scroll to the left until you get to the search page.  enter "App Store", does this find the app?  If so, then the icon is lost on some later page or is in some folder.

  • HT4972 How does someone who has a 1st generation iPad but no computer update to the current operating system?

How does someone who has a 1st generation iPad but no computer update to the current operating system?

You take the iPad to someone or somewhere where you can update the device using iTunes on a computer. There is no other way to do it. You must use iTunes on a computer.
Apple Stores will update the device for you. Make an appointment at an Apple Store for help.

  • Why can't I update my 1st generation ipad past iOS version 5.1.1?

My 1st generation iPad crashed all the time. I can hardly use it any longer. Someone suggested updating to a new version of iOS. My current version is 5.1.1 & it keeps saying that is the latest version. Why can't I update it??

In theory you're right that Missy8818's device will "continue work as it always has" except that more and more apps will require updates that she won't be able to do. Before long, it really won't work like it always has.
Not exactly. Just because apps have updates available, does not mean they are required. You will not be able to update apps to get the new features and looks but the version of the apps you currently have should work as they do right now even if they are no longer available in the app store. Just be sure to backup up your device and your iTunes library.
My frustration is also in the lack of options.. I have a 15 yr old Win 98 machine that I could still use if I wanted to – albeit with outdated, old,  but still functioning  software. Sure using these older versions I give up newer bells and whistles, but that is a compromise I CAN CHOOSE to make if I wish to hold on a little longer to my hardware. Apple offers no such choice with the Ipad. Their timeline for obsolescence is your time line. Take it or leave it.
As with your iPad, the 15 year old Windows 98 machine will not be able to update to the most current versions of the apps (programs) either, including Microsoft's own Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player.
