HT5313 OS 10.7.5 update has trashed my macbook air.

OS 10.7.5 update has trashed my macbook air. It now takes ages to boot and does not shut down. How can I restore my computer? Also textedit can't open files saying I don't have permission. I can cat them in Terminal fine and the permissions are OK in Get Info.

Thanks macjack and FatMac\>MacPro ,
After repaiing permissions in disc utility I couldn’t log in again, and couldn’t understand rebuilding ACL permissions as I had printed out your replies and had no access to my email to get the link.
After trying to install the update from the combo updater thing got even worse, next I did a reinstall from recovery, which spent six hour downloading then failed with no error. I did an erase of my partition and reinstall which then failed but gave me an error about encryption. So I erased the whole drive and reinstalled. This worked. I then ran the update again and it was broken the same as the first update!
After another erase and reinstall I decided not to update, so I stated the restore from time machine. After this completed it crashed with the error message saying I must power off and then on again. restarting didn’t help.
After another erase of the whole drive, and reinstall I did a partial restore from time machine and am running again.
However, I don’t want to attempt another upgrade to 10.7.5. Will Apple comeout with a statement about what went wrong? When will you fix this update?
In the mean time I suggest to any owners of MacBook Air to avoid this update.
For reference this is my model:

  • 10.4.5 update has trashed Safari

Since running the update, Safari has become unstable.
I have had a zillion unexpected quits today and it all started when I ran the updater. This always happens when attempting to play flash video content within an html page (such as in the cnet.com page I was just at) but it has happened in other random ways too.
Hare's an extract from the last crash report:

I am not using any unusual configurations and I have repared permissions. Next I will see if flash needs updating. Does anybody have any advice or is anybody in Apple listening???
Please don't just tell me not to use System Update in the future. I am naiive enough to belive that if Apple put it in the OS and it says Update Now then it should be okay to do that and I like to assume that software has been properly tested before it is inflicted on us. At least that is what I would do if I ran a computer mutinational.
Like I said, call me naiive...

I think I have cracked it. And it kind of involves eating Humble Pie.
The short answer is that Safari Enhancer had set Safari to report to websites as Internet Explorer 6 for Windows - and as soon as I set that back to Safari my problems ceased.
I really thought I had set everything back to default before deciding it was a Safari problem but evidently I had not. I suggest anybody having this problem check whether they have anything similar.
The longer story is that I realised from the crash report that flash content was always associated with the crashes. I thought maybe I should update flash but when I went to the macromdia site all I could see was Windows software, like it thought I was running a Windows machine... and then it clicked.
I have no idea if or why I set Safari to report as IE (maybe to get round some badly coded sites?) or whether the update did this to Safari Enhancer itself... or possibly why the update has rendered this feature of Safari Enhancer a liability. All I know is that all is well with my world and I am suitably chastened.
If, on the other hand, you don't have anything like Safari Enhancer installed in the first place you may still be stuffed. Perhaps you need to download Safari Enhancer to sort this out...

  • After updating Firefox on my MacBook Air (OSX 10.6.8), it has ceased to work. I open it, but it never gets beyond the Connecting... message.

I have always used Firefox on my MacBook Air. But since updating to the latest version of Firefox (7.0.1), it freezes as soon as I open it - there is a constantly running "Connecting..." message, and the little circle turns continuously, and there is a blank page. Eventually, I get an error message saying "Connection Timed Out" - and it does not matter which website I try to contact. All my other browsers (Safari, Chrome" work fine

    Hi franverdi-
It sounds like you've run into issues from the upgrade. I've found a Support article that helps with issues of not being able to connect after an upgrade:
    [[Cannot connect after upgrading Firefox]]
    I hope that helps!

  • Thunderbolt update for mid-2011 MacBook Air causes slowdowns and flickering?

So I've experienced not one problem since getting my mid-2011 MacBook Air.  After installing the Thunderbolt update that was pushed through Software Update the other day, I've noticed that when I go into Mission Control or App Expose it's more sluggish than it used to be.
Additionally, I saw my screen flicker several times - I have never seen this before.
Has anyone experienced similar problems since installing this update the other day when it came out?  I'm most concerned about the sluggishness of the screens.
    Thanks,
    BJC

I never installed it, it's popped up each time I've checked -- but today it wasn't offered in Software Update.  Odd.

  • ITunes won't launch since maverick update on late 2010 macbook air

have tried downloading and reinstalling itunes on my late 2010 macbook air, but since maverick update itunes will not lauch and has to be force quit in order to close, this happens instantly on launch??

My machine was running quite slow too, especially boot time. Repairing permissions and zapping PRAM seemed to help out a lot. Further, if you want, you can disable hibernation and delete sleep image. I realize that most that run a Mac don't expect to do any tweaking, and hopefully Apple will come out with a SP soon that 'fixes' some of the issues that many are having. I don't think having 2GB of memory is the main issue, as many with 8GB of RAM are having the same issue. I did a lot of tweaking and Lion is working as well as Snow Leopard was on my MBA 11" with 2GB of RAM. You can also successfully run monoligual on your MBA, get rid of language packs you don't need and save 1.5GB.

  • How to update iPhoto on my macbook air?

    Hi,
I bought a MacBook Air last year, which came with iLife pre- installed.
The iPhoto version is 9.1.1. It seemed a little buggy.
But for some reason I can't get auto update for it.  I tried to register it, hoping that this may solve the problem, but it requires a MPN number which I don't have.
I also tried to download the updates from Apple online download, they would not install.
Can anyone help resolving this problem? Any suggestions.
    Many thanks.
    John

    Thanks much.
Indeed after I moved back the apps, they are now updating. I guess that's  the trouble for being anal.
BTW, I think that I have rearranged other apps,  is there a way to find out which ones have been moved?  Or would it be safe just to move everthing back to the application folder?
    Thanks again.

  • "Unknown error has occurred" in MacBook Air App Store

    Hi,
When I try to log onto the App Store from my used MacBook Air, it says "unknown error has occured" and doesn't allow me to move forward. I have read that these typs of issues (I am having problems with logging into the computer with my Apple ID and FaceTime as well) can be fixed once upgrading to Mountain Lion, but I cannot upgrade if I cannot connect to the store.
So, how do I go about entering the store without making an alternate ID?
    Thanks!

    Hi rob8up,
How long ago did you speak to the techs? Have you given them (meaning Apple) enough time to rectify this issue? If not, chill out. If so, then we can't help you here. We are just users like you....
You can send feedback to Apple via this link:

  • How to uninstall java 8 update 40 from my macbook air

Using MacBook Air Mid 2012, software OS X 10.10.2.  Want to uninstall Java 8 Update 40 from my system
as it is causing some problems in reading some files.  Could someone guide me how to do that as the Java
software does not show in Applications folder and I am unable to find any other way.

    The feature is called Continuity.
And it requires an iPhone using the same  Apple ID for Messages as the Mac, and that Text Message Forwarding be enabled in Messages settings on the iPhone.
If all is set correctly, try signing out and back in of Messages on both the iPhone, and the Mac.

  • New Apple TV update & now not recognizing MacBook Air, all devices have home sharing ON.

This is getting ridiculous. I wanted to simply shoot my favorite playlist through to my TV & surround sound when a few friends stopped by. I went to turn it on using my Apple TV and wham, and had to install an update. There went 1/2 hour of waiting. Then finally done, and, nope....**** thing doesn't recognize the macbook air, or my iPhone, or my iPad. ALL have home sharing ON, including Apple TV, all are connected to the netwoork. But nope. I finally gave up after an hour of restarting all & trying to troubleshoot, find help online, but I had to get back to my guests.
These electronics are taking WAAAY too much time to update, diagnose, troubleshoot, ..... we do nothing anymore but sit on the computer.
Anyone have ANY idea how to fix this? Oh, wait, maybe I should kill two hours at a Genius Bar? Yeah, that would have been great: hey, wait a couple of hours everyone while I try to schedule an appt and get to the genisu bar so we can listen to music.

    Did you restart your router.

  • 2006-06-28 Updater has trashed 3 Nanos

The guys at the Apple store are baffled. They can update my Nano to the 1.2 version on another computer... but as soon as I connect it to mine everything locks up and the Nano is trashed. We finally figured out that only the 1.1.1 version will work with my computer. I seem to have no hope of using the latest version of the Nano software with my computer. Is there some resolution to this problem? Are other Compaq notebook computer owners having this problem? My Nano works just fine as long as I stick to the 1.1.1 version of the software (March, 2006 updater). And yes, I've tried disabling virtually everything on my computer in the way of unnecessary drivers and software before running the updater. The only solution is to restore it with the March '06 updater and then it works fine. I don't know how this post got into this category... sorry for the misfile... but I can't seem to delete it to move it to the Nano section.

I am having a similar problem since the update, but with my iBook and OS X. My iPod isn't showing up in iTunes or OS X.
I have tried to restore the iPod, but it doesn't appear in OS X, so I don't know how I can otherwise do so.

  • IPhone 4 update has killed my MacBook!

After updating my software two days ago, the administrator account on my 13" Aluminum MacBook has not worked. It works for 5-10 seconds after login and then totally freezes and doesn't recognise any change in status such as the removal of the power source or the plugin of my iPhone. I am positive that it was the update that caused this problem, as I have not updated the software on the other user account on my laptop, and that works perfectly fine.
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how can it be fixed?
I called Apple Support yesterday before I realised that my secondary account was still working, and we established that there was no problem with the hard drive, but we were unable to get into "safe mode". The only advice the tech could give me was to find my startup discs and take it to an Apple store and call back in.
Now that I have more information, and am able to actually use most of the computer, I'm starting to think there may be an easier solution?
    Thanks!

I don't suppose you have access to another Mac?
Safe Mode failing to work could be a sign of more serious troubles.
Did you get to the login window for Safe Mode?
As for getting at your data, you may be able to enable the root account and work with your other files.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1528
I've never used root in OS X, but what you could do to save your data is login to the root account, then move the data from the broken user account to the Shared folder (this is within Macintosh HD>Users). Once you've moved the data you need to the Shared folder, log out of the root account and into the other working user. From there, you can move the data out of the Shared folder and into the new user account.
I'm not absolutely certain about my steps above, so let me know if you have troubles.

  • Mavericks upgrade has trashed my MacBook

Upgraded to Mavericks a couple of weeks ago and everything going relatively ok. All maintenance and updates done.
Yesterday evening I got the hanging grey screen on login. Arghhh!
Tried to resolve issue in various ways but nothing worked, i.e. live file system repair failed, unable to boot in safe mode, unable to reinstall, etc.
Reset PRAM and lost the login screen, to be replaced by the flashing question mark folder. Double Arghhh!
Created a bootable USB today. Recovery HD partition still couldn't repair disk nor could it unencrypt it ("error -69749: Unable to unlock the Core Storage volume"). Also wouldn't allow me to reinstall Mavericks as valid password not unlocking (FileVault protected) Macintosh HD.
Similarly, I couldn't unencrypt using Terminal:
                             diskutil corestorage unlockVolume UUID -stdinpassphrase
                             diskutil corestorage revert UUID -stdinpassphrase
Naturally, I hadn't got round to making a backup of my most recent photos, etc.,
I can't believe my perfectly working MacBook is dead. Obviously I'll try a wipe and clean install but how can I retrieve my data asap, ideally tonight as I have an online tax return to do....

  • Trying to Update software on new MacBook Air

I go into update software proceed to up date software it downloads the update then follows by restarting.
All seems good I get asked to restart then it comes back corrupt files.
This all but taken me 1hour or so to get to this point.
This MacBook is straight out of box nothing done to it.
So I start again it has done it twice.
Rather fed up & my time required me to go to work then play with my new toy
What is the best way to start updating software. Should I start with program's then os. Or OS then program's

Perform the following, stopping with the first one which works:
    1. Open the Mac App Store's Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept them into your Apple ID, do so.
    2. Move them out of the Applications folder(they may need to be put into the Trash temporarily), and then see if you can download them for free from their individual product pages. If you're asked to buy them, see #3.
    3. Click here, contact Apple, and wait for a response.
    4. Buy them.
