HT5361 Searching messages in Mail

When I try to search messages in Mail, no messages appear?

Try re-indexing the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.
Reindex messages
Try re-indexing Spotlight if the above didn't work.

  • I cannot search messages in Mail... why??

My Mail downloads from my Gmail account. If I search in Mail with the To, From or Subject tabs checked, it's fine. But if I try to search the Entire Message, it never finds a thing - I don't think it even tries!
The messages are all on my HDD and I've had a good look through the Mail Preferences, but cannot work it out. I can, however, search the entire message via Spotlight - but I want my computer to work properly!
    Any help? Thanks.

joefinan, I did a test just to see what happens on mine. It might be different since I don't use Gmail. I have a Saved folder and when I did a Search in the Mail window for the word "July" (without quotes), it only came up with one email with the word "July" even though I knew there were two emails that contained the word. However, after a few minutes I tried again and the two emails came up so I'm wondering if it is indexing the emails as it searches so it won't find something that hasn't been indexed yet. Just my observation.

  • HT5361 new message in mail- it opens BEHIND the inbox

Something just changed on my Mac - now when I open a new mail message it it positioned BEHIND the inbox and I cannot read it.  How do i make it so it pops up IN FRONT OF the inbox?  (that is the way it has always worked - I don't know what changed.)

Would you post a screen shot of a message so people can see what you are seeing? Make sure you cover any personal information using Preview. Post the screen shot in a Reply using the camera icon. Copy and paste doesn't work.

  • Can not find some messages in Mail using search

I have some problems with Mail.app I can not find some messages in Mail using search, the strange thing is that sometimes mail search finds some messages, but after rebuilding spotlight index the search displays other messages with the all messages searched using same search criteria. I have also tried to delete Envelope index file from the Mail folder in usr/library and forced mail to import all mailboxes but it started to crash importing some of mailboxes - I deleted the messages from that mailboxes, imported remaining mailboxes and tried to rebuild mailbox, but everything without a successes. Any ideas how to solve it?

  • Search 'Entire Message' in Mail on network account.

    Hello -
Recently an issue has come up where my users are unable to choose the "Entire Message" option when performing a search in Mail.  "From", "To" and "Subject" all work fine.
All of my users are running latest updates of 10.6 and 10.7 and all are on network accounts.  This is not a new problem, but it's a new question that came up a few months ago and I've been scraping for an answer since then.
-I understand that for the "From, To and Subject" search options, Mail handles them separately in the Envelope Index file.
-Spotlight is responsible for the Entire Message option.
-I had to force spot light to index the user folder through terminal using mdutil and specifying "~/".  The user folders are not on local storage so Spotlight ignores them.
After forcing mdutil to index - a spotlight search will return results as I would expect - searching entire message but, Mail still does not allow for the Entire Message search option.
Please let me know if more information would help.  Thank you in advance.

Maybe I just needed to talk it out, but I think I've sorted it out on my own.
I went to the Account Prefs > Offending Mailbox and under the heading:
"Keep copies of messages offline for viewing" from "Dont Keep Any..." to "All..."
Then I went to Mailbox>Rebuild in the menubar and Bang!
    Results!
Now I'm just waiting for the rebuild to finish to see what kind of hit my HD is going to take.

  • In OS Yosemite the search function in Mail, Finder, Spotlight- does not work

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
    2,6 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
    OS Yosemite,
    Finder versión 10.10.1
    Mail Versión 8.1 (1993)
In OS Yosemite the search function in Mail, Finder, Spotlight… does not work. Messages or documents with the search criteria are there and one could find them manually, but the search function fails to find them. Following advice from Apple Support (728965377):
    1. I applied an Apple protocol for adware removal (Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac); I had none, because I had formally utilized a similar protocol that I had found in Internet, actually an app that implemented automatically Apple's adware removal protocol.
    2. I rebuild the post boxes in Mail (Mail (Yosemite): Reconstruir buzones); It took a while but it functioned properly
    3. I re-install the System (OS X Yosemite: Reinstalar OS X); It took about 4 hours but there was no problem whatsoever with the installation.
Afterwards I searched for messages in Mail, and documents in Finder and Spotlight, without any difficulty. The search function in all of them was working properly. But the next time that I needed to search messages or documents, an hour later or so, the problem reappear and a couple of new issues occurred:
    1. in app RagTime 6.5.2 (Build 1821), www.ragtime.de, the menu bar disappears (it is invisible), when one performs certain operations, e. g., calculating a value with a formula, whether it is in a spreadsheet or some other component (text, drawing, etc.). After touching with the cursor the menu bar is visible again.
    2. after reading an e-mail in Mail or copying an address, this is seeing as a floating object in the finder and over every application. There is no logical way to get rid of the floating object and neither copying or deleting or cutting it. It is not a big issue but nonetheless bothersome.
    3. In Mail, messages with Flag or in VIP contacts cannot be seen in the appropriate folders, only in the Incoming mail folder, together with other messages. It seems to me, this issue is part of same search function problem.
    4. The preview function within Mail does not show the attached documents to a message, whether it is in the IN, OUT or Draft boxes.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try again to re-index Spotlight. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Is it possible to import messages into Mail that are in .csv format?

Just in case my previous topic subject was preventing some folks from checking this out, I'lll try to ask my question in a more generic way.
I have an archive of a mailbox from another email program that I'm trying to move over to Apple Mail. My archive is saved as a .csv file. I can open the file in either Numbers, Excel, or TextEdit, and I can see that all the info is there. However, I want to be able to import these into Mail so that I can integrate these old messages with my other emails. I would want to be able to search for these messages using Mail's search tools and be able to identify messages based on who they're from, the subject line, date received, etc.
Specifically, this archive was exported out of Earthlink Total Access. My only options out of Earthlink were to export out as either .csv or a proprietary .dat file. I'm trying to figure out how to get the .csv file into Mail. I tried going through Entourage, but Entourage only imports contacts from a .csv file and not messages. I found a Unix utility that coverts a .csv to an mbox file (which Entourage would be able to import), but I'm not sure how to get it to work (I'm not that swift with Unix).
    http://membled.com/work/apps/outlooktext_tombox/
    Any brilliant ideas?

I too am trying to transfer Total Access messages into Mail and have stumbled at every attempt to use other software, such as Entourage and OE, as intermediaries. I would love to hear if you get any response to this question. I was able to transfer all the addresses, but not the messages.

  • E-Mail search misses e-mails

When using the search function in the mail app (IOS 8.1.3) within "all inboxes" using the name of the sender "Smith" the search delivers a long list of e-mails sorted by date from the newest to the oldest. It shows more results when "All Mailboxes" is active, of course less when "Current Mailbox" (I guess in this case "all inboxes") is active.
I am missing an E-mail in the search result. When I try the search in the correct folder "Archive" the search delivers that particular E-Mail.
Why is the search function when used from "all inboxes" with the radio button "All Mailboxes" not delivering that result. Does it only refer to E-Mails within all inboxes? If yes, how do I search all folders of all mailboxes? The general search from the home screen is much less helpful than the search within the mail app.
    Thank you!

I've been unable to search email "message" body ever since getting Verizon.  I can search fine by sender, subject, etc,  but when I try to search "message" I get a Verizon error message (not a browser error) stating: "We were unable to perform your request. Please try again."   I've called tech support, and they tried to say this is some sort of broswer issue. It ISN'T, because again this is a verizon message coming up, and the other searches work fine.  This has never worked in MONTHS, and I'm about ready to switch to another provider, since I need to be able to search my emails.  UGGGH......

  • Why is the search on my mail app not working?

I just bought the new iPod touch 5th generation. I synced it with my iTunes, transferring all the apps I had on my old 3rd generation iPod touch. Everything works fine, except the search on my mail app. When I type in some keyword to search, and click the "all" label, it won't actually search all my email content, only the subjects and senders. Any way to fix this?

No. From the Users Guide it only searchs mail for:
Mail—To, From, and Subject fields of all accounts (the text of messages isn’t searched)

  • Search message body returns empty

I have deleted global-messages-db.sqlite and re-indexed my mail.
    It is an imap account.
I have "Search subfolders" and "Run search on server" checked.
I get empty results when searching (Body: Contains: "my search query")
I am searching for text that I know is in the body of email messages.
I have even opened up an email, copied the text and pasted it and get no results.
    Thunderbird 24.4.0
    Windows XP

    Yes. it is synchronized.
Ctrl+Shift+F to open the Search Messages.
    Then for the criteria a I select {Body: Contains: "type in what i'm looking for"}
I have tried - Search for messages in:
root of the email account; Inbox; Sent; but I get no returns.
Again I have the "Search subfolders and Run search on server" checked
I get results returned when I do a search in the subject line
    {Subject: Contains: "type in what i'm looking for"}
After trying many message body searches, I have just gotten a partial search return, but it is only emails that are replies with the original email quoted in them. The search does not return all messages containing this text nor the original sent email.

  • Find "sent to" messages in Mail?

In Mail, I'm trying to find a single email to a guy that I send email to a at least daily.  If I could see a list of only email I'd sent just to him in the past 3 months, I think I could find it.  But when I click on the "Sent" mailbox and search for his name, I get every email that I sent him, plus group emails that he was copied on both from me and others, which multiplies the results by many times.
How can I search for only emails that were sent just by me, to just him?
    Thanks.

  • Accidentally deleted Gmail Sent Messages in Mail; how to restore in Gmail

I use Apple Mail with snow leopard (OS 10.6.3)
In trying to troubleshoot a problem (2 copies of Sent emails showing in Apple's Sent Mail folder; one from local account, one from Gmail after syncing with server), I tried setting the Apple Email pref to Delete Sent Mail on quitting Mail.
Of course, this resulted in the Gmail server deleting ALL my Sent Mail. Although that mail CAN be found through a SEARCH (search ALL mail; FROM: my name; (for some reason, it is NOT all in trash, so needed to search on ALL MAIL), I cannot figure out any simple way to put the Sent Mail back into the Sent folder on Gamil.
I tried doing a custom search, but cannot move selected mail to Sent folder (only to Inbox)
Any help would be most appreciated- thanks.

In Mail previous versions, when I deleted a message from my Gmail account, it was locally. Now all the messages deleted in Mail, goes to "Trash" in my Gmail account. Is there anyway of avoiding it? Everyday I have to restore from "trash" to folders in Gmail account to keep my saved messages with the exception of "sent" messages which I must restore to "Inbox" folder.
    Thanks for your help

  • Can you do a search in the Mail app?

As title really, is there a search feature in the default mail app? If there is I'm being really stupid because I can't see it. Any help appreciated!
    Message was edited by: BritishBeef

    You're not being stupid, BritishBeef.
It is possible to have Spotlight search only the Mail.app Inbox, but the feature is hidden by default. I discovered it by accident.
To enable the the Mail.app specific Search field in your Inbox just scroll up (meaning swipe your finger down the screen) to reveal the hidden field at the top of the screen.
    That's it.
Swiping down the screen will also reveal an app-specific Search field in Notes, and other apps as well, I suspect. Haven't checked them all…
Remember there are no stupid questions…well, maybe there's one; the one you don't ask 'cause you think it's stupid… =)
    Have fun…

  • Invisible messages in Mail?

Going through old mail, I came across a message from a friend, a reply to one I'd sent him. Curious what it was I'd sent him, I did a search for the subject, and there was the original message -- only it wasn't. In the search results the original message is listed, but the "Mailbox" field is blank, and when I click on the message listed it opens a blank window. There's a "Show in Mailbox" link in the window, but if I click on it nothing happens. There must be a message, since Mail finds it in a search; but where is it? It's not in the Sent mailbox (the logical choice).
This has actually happened several times this morning, as I've been going through old mail. In the other cases, I've viewed an old email, then done a search for its subject, then found it in the results, together with what appears to be an identical copy of the same email, but with the "Mailbox" field blank; and when I click on the copy to view it, I get a blank window. This is odd behavior, but nothing seemed to be lost; Mail just seemed to be creating a "ghost" copy of the email for some reason. But in this most recent case, it seems to have misplaced (?) an email I haven't viewed, though it can still find it in a search.
Is there a way to force Mail to re-index its data? Is it going to lose more mail if I do so?

Is there a way to force Mail to re-index its data?
Yes. The problem is that your Mail index appears to be corrupted, so you need to rebuild it like this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
    3. Restart Mail, wait for it to import your existing messages, then check to see if things are back to normal, which they should be.
Is it going to lose more mail if I do so?
You haven't lost any mail; the program just doesn't know that it still has it.
