HT5381 "first download and install Mountain Lion"?

The upgrade/migration guide says to "first download and install Mountain Lion".  Am I correct in assuming they just haven't updated it to say "Mavericks"?
Thanks,
Jascha

Which MBP do you have?  Have you looked at the list of support machines on the Tech Specs page linked to http://www.apple.com/osx to see that your computer is there?

I had iLife pre-installed on my aluminium Macbook 2009 with OSX Leopard on it. My hard drive broke but got most of the info off it and just installed snow Leopard on to a new drive and then downloaded and installed Mountain Lion over it. Now I don't have iLife anymore. How do I get it back?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X doesn't come with iLife applications, so you have to install them manually after installing Mac OS X.
Insert the Applications disc or Mac OS X Install Disc 2 DVD and install iLfe applications. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest update. If you want, you can purchase iMovie, GarageBand and iPhoto in the App Store, so you will get the most recent version

  • I just downloaded and installed mountain lion on my macbook pro but it didn't change the picture on desktop to mountain lion in is still snow leopard is that supposed to be that way.

I just downloaded and installed mountain lion but it kept snow leopard on my screen is that supposed to happen or did i miss something?

Then you're good to go.  Updating your OS doesnt change your desktop background, you can do that manually, if you wish.

  • Downloading and Installing Mountain Lion on a 2010 Macbook Pro Running OS X 10.6.8

I'm attempting to download mountain lion, but everytime I click the download button, it turns white and the just reverts back to normal. I tried restarting the computer, and I see the dock icon saying it's downloading, but again, nothing in the App Store changes. I've tried deleting the cache for the App Store, I've tried resetting the App Store, I tried creating a VPN network, but nothing worked. I'm out of idea.

    App store download problems:
    - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
    - Quit the App Store
    - In Finder - Go>Go to folder...  (or Apple-shift-G)
    - Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
    - It will take you to a folder.  Delete com.apple.appstore

  • App Store doesn't know I already purchased, downloaded and installed Mountain Lion

I've have downloaded OS 10.8 Mountain Lion from the App Store on my iMac. It's downloaded and installed, but every time I open the App Store, and look at my purchases it still says I still have to download Mountain Lion. It's a small problem, but rather annoying. It there anyway for the App Store to know Mountain Lion is installed on the iMac?

No it is NOT telling you you HAVE to redownload it. It is giving you the opportunity to Re-Download it.

After months of failed attempts, I finally got mountain lion loaded on my macbook pro. Shortly thereafter I received an email saying my id had been used to access icloud.  During the setup process, I unchecked the icloud box so I am not sure whether this is normal or has someone else using icloud with my id. I am pretty sure that I did not select iclout  for set up.

Don't worry I've sorted it! I just had to turn off Reminders as well in iCloud. Calendar then worked fine, even when I turned Calendar and Reminders back on.

  • After downloading and installing Mountain Lion my iMac 27" is nearly non-functioning.  SLOW beyond endurance on my part!  This same thing happened after downloading Lion last year.  An Apple advisor had me reload it.  Still terrible!  Help?

Has anyone had this problem?  Any solution(s) welcome!

Thanks for the info.  I'll have to check this later this evening, since I'm in my office presently.
However, I do think it is (was) indexing.

Ive just upgraded my late 2009 macbook, and things are not working properly. First of all, when I started the computer first time after installing Mountain Lion, some message advised me that some files were impossible to install. Once I wrote my password, and for now on, everytime I start the session, another window advise me that "Java SE 6" is missing, due that, the computer can't run some "CS5Service Manager". If I try to install it, the download ends with an error. If finally, you skip the istallation, you arrive to the dock, but the menu bar at the top of the screen doesn't show up.
In addition, my trackpad doesn't works either. I can move the arrow but i can't click anywhere, probably because the option of clicking by touching is disabeled and I can't performance a regular click.
I'll be very glad if someone know what the heck is happening with my computer. Anyway, I'm going to the genius bar next Saturday. Thx!

    We're sorry.

  • Can I download and use Mountain Lion without Lion downloaded first

Can i download and use Mountain Lion if I haven't downloaded Lion yet?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion from Mac OS X Snow Leopard or OS X Lion, so you can install Mountain Lion without having OS X Lion.
Just open App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion. If you aren't using Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you have to buy it. Don't forget to make a backup with Time Machine and/or Carbon Copy Cloner before upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion. Also, check if your apps are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com

    Disable anti virus software.
Apps such as Little Snitch, Net Nanny, and Hands Off can prevent apps from downloading including Mountain Lion as well as third party download managers.
Keep in mind, for downloading Mountain Lion from the App Store, a high speed (broadband) internet connection is strongly recommended by Apple as noted here > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
If you need to reinstall OS X or repair the the startup disk using Mountain Lion Recovery, that requires broadband access to the internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the internet form Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation.

  • How can i download and install OSX LION on my old black macbook from 2009?

how can i download and install OSX LION on my old black macbook from 2009?

Click here, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, install it, and run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo updater. You can then either buy Mountain Lion 10.8 from the Mac App Store or phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

  • Want to erase HD and install Mountain Lion

I have a mid-2009 macbook pro with osx lion.  I just downloaded mountain lion and made a boot disk.  I'd like to erase HD and install Mountain lion.  I wanted to test the boot disk before proceeding, so I put it in, restarted holding "option".  The options of selecting the HD, Recovery Drive, or the Boot Disk were presented.  I selected the boot disk and nothing happens.  I get the pale screen with progress circle in the middle and it goes on and on forever.  However when I'm on the desktop, the boot disk opens just fine, and I can install from there.  Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?  I'd like to erase the HD but I'm afraid the boot disk won't load if I do, and I won't be able to install mountain lion (or anything for that matter).

It's the OS X Mountail Lion.app file.  I was told I could create a bootable flashdrive with the InstallESD.dmg file. But I'm guessing that still leaves me with installing from internet.
    Thanks for all your help.
Yes, you can use the InstallESD.dmg file from that and create a bootable USB thumb drive which you can boot from and install ML from that thumb drive.
Do you know how to extract the InstallESD.dmg file from that and use Disk Utility to Restore it to a USB thumb drive? You should be able to from within Mavericks.
Or you might be able to download DiskMaker X 3.0.3 and use that app along with an 8GB USB thumb drive to create your ML installer drive. You would point DiskMaker X to your OS X Mountain Lion.app file and follow the prompts.

Yes. Open the Mac App Store and click the Purchases icon in the toolbar while holding down the Option key. The "installed" button will change to "install" and you'll be able to download the installer again.

I just bought and installed mountain lion, and I can't get to sign in to hotmail after several trials. I need help please. Thanks.

so its in a forum, which I didn't stumble upon because it wasn't anywhere in the adobe troubleshooting steps for Windows 8 that automatically came up for me when I clicked that I couldn't see the test flash movie on their site. I guess if I spent another half a day googling I might have found it.
BTW, unchecking Active X filtering in IE10, was NOT the fix. I had to go into the security tab, and change the custom active X setting I listed above. So this link you provided which mentions unchecking Active X filtering was not the fix that worked in my scenario.
