  • HELP - iPod Update Problem

Just joined the Forum after reading some of the posts here - you guys seem to know alot more about this than me so any help is greatly appreciated.
My 30Gb 5th Gen iPod has software version 1.2.3. iTunes tells me there is a version 1.3 available but when I try to update it I get an unknown error message (1417).
I've been through the support pages and have done the 5 R's as recommended but my iPod won't restore - not even to the early version. I get an unknown error message (1418) when I try to restore.
On trying to just synch the iPod without updating the software iTunes tells me that my PC is not authorised to play over 100 tracks and it has now removed them from my iPod even after I have signed in to authorise my computer over 30 times when the messages appear!!
This is the only computer I have used to update my iTunes and iPod for over 2 years now and it is running fine. I've had no problems until now and usually update every 2 - 3 months.
I need help to get my iPod updated to the latest software and to get my iPod / iTunes to recognise that my computer is authorised to play the music.
Help please - I've been trying to get this thing to work for hours!!
    Cheers, Al

Thanks Jeff but I've been through these steps on two or three occasions before I joined the forum and they haven't done any good.
The other reply tells me to re-format the iPod.
Is this a good idea or would I just be left with a (semi) useless portable drive?
If I were to consider this would I do it through "My Computer" and format the drive or explore the drive and just delete all the content?
I don't want to do anything that'll be un-recoverable. Let's face it I am still able to use the iPod at the moment and although I've lost access to 100 songs I still have over 3000 songs to keep me going! All I really want to do is update the software and keep it updated.
Another thread suggested the removal of iTunes and iPod updater software from the PC and then re-installation. Any views on that solution?

  • I think I found out what the iTunes + iPod update problem is

    All,
I spent some more time trying to figure out what exactly this iPod update/iTunes problem is and I think I discovered something interesting.
I can manually sync my MP3's but not my AAC files. When I sync MP3's - iTunes and the iPod are fine. However, as soon as I attempt to sync even one Protected AAC file, iTunes bombs.
I'd be interested in seeing if others try this and get the same results. If this is the core problem, syncing protected or AAC files, then we may be able figure out the exact component that has botched everything up here.
    Chris

RE: manual sync - I mean manual copying through iTunes. That is - not selecting to update the songs automatically. I drag them from my library to the iPod within iTunes so I have control what goes there.
Bummer - I thought I was on to something. All I can say is that I can sync anything but the Protected AAC's. When I let it automatically sync my iPod, iTunes bombed. When I selected manual syncing and moved a playlist, it bombed after a few songs. I tried to look into why it would stop on certain songs, and noticed that it was bombing on the protected AAC's. So, I copied over 1000 MP3's including songs and podcasts, and they copied successfully. I selected one AAC and immediately it bombed.
Maybe our problems are not the same?

  • THIS WILL SOLVE YOUR IPOD UPDATE PROBLEM (HOPEFULLY...)

I checked this out, did what he said, and it worked perfectly.
GKE, "Ipod update freeze, firewire problem, possible fix for many.", 10:46am Oct 9, 2005 CDT

Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick for me - a few more songs copied then previously, but then I got the 'Attempting to copy to the disk "xxx" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to' ....

  • Solution to iPod Updater problems

Anyone experiencing problems with their iPods only downloading a handful of tunes - here is a solution:
The problem is due to your old iPod being incompatible with the new Updater and/or iTunes v.6.
Apple don't appear to be too worried so the best solution is to roll back your versions of the Updater and iTunes to a pairing that works.
If you have your original CD then you could use that, but my trusty Pod is so old it came with Musicmatch Jukebox, not iTunes.
So, first use Add/Remove Programmes utility to remove all iPod updaters from your PC.
Then go to Download.com and search for iPod updaters. I've used iPod Updater 2005-06-26 which is on there.
    Download this and install it.
Plug in your iPod and open the Updater.
    Run the Restore function.
Then open iTunes and check which version you are running (Help menu, About iTunes). If you are running the latest version (6) then you may be in trouble as I could not get it to work with this release. You'll need to track down an earlier version. Unfortunately Apple do not allow you to download any of the previous releases.
So, if your original CD has iTunes you can use this, otherwise find a friend who has bought an iPod recently and use their CD. I recently got my wife a Nano so used this disk which has iTunes 4 on it.
Once this has been installed plug in your iPod and it will go through the naming and registering bit, as if you are using it for the first time.
You should then be able to Sync away as normal.
So - in brief, the configuration you are after is:
    iPod Updater 2005-06-26 & iTunes 4
I hope this works for you. It's taken me about 30 hrs of frustration to finally solve!

I just downloaded the new update for iTunes 6. and it fixed all the problems I had with updating from iTunes 4. to iTunes 6. Update came out 2005.10.20

  • Ipod update problem

Problem in attempting to put the latest version of 7.02 software onto ipod to synch songs.
    Update is greyed out.
    Restore gives the following:
    Error message:
There was a problem downloading the ipod software to the ipod "iPod" The requested resource was not found.

I too am recieving this message:
"There was a problem downloading the ipod software to
the ipod "iPod" The requested resource was not found."
and cannot get my ipod to work at all. Any feedback would be great.

  • Ipod updating problems

I am having trouble updating my ipod. when i plug it into the computer nothing shows up. i thought it might be a problem with itunes but when i plugged in my friends nano to check to see if his showed up, it showed up on the side of itunes, so obviously its not a problem with itunes.
    any suggestions?

Update: After again repeating the 5Rs (instead of re-install, downloaded latest version of iTunes which prompted for "repair" rather than "install"), a message asking me if I wanted to update my iPod software came up. I accepted, and following the install was able to sync without the "corrupted" message. Of course when the sync was finished, I tried to play my iPod and noticed that there was no music on it (so in fact the sync hadn't really worked). Since then, all I get when connecting the iPod is the "corrupted" message, even after another reset.
    Suggestions?

  • IPod Updating problem update . . .

Well its been about a month and a half since I've posted on my very popular problem among other mini users....
That Windows does not recognise the unit, charging is possible, but no updating what so ever ! ! It has been VERY frustrating... wasted a lot of time on here mainly, trying to find answers, clues - anything that could help me really, and so I went threw a long process (like a lot of you have/are going threw.
Well unfortuneately its STILL not over for me, after completely formatting my computer - uninstalling/reinstalling all iTunes/Quick Time/iPod - changing USB ports/cables..... EVERYTHING thats been suggested I've done. I stopped wasting my time asking Apple for a hand, they really had nothing for me, of course unless I was willing to cough up an extra $60 on top of the $300 I've already spent for my mini to begin with . . . I dunno I really had high expectations with Apple - Well anyways.... yesterday I hooked my mini to my dads lap top with a NEW USB cable - New software - NEW everything - and Still same problem. I've finally admitted that my MINI is the problem, not my computer which I have been putting all the blame on this whole time. My computer is fine, my iPod mini is the one with the defect.
I've given up - and Im sending it to apple - maybe they'll give me a hand and help me out a little!

As far as I know it must be connected to a wall charger to complete the update. I'm not sure if you can continue without doing that. Can you get to an Apple Store or electronic store that might even let you plug in your iPod to complete the update?

  • IPod update problems

itunes shows my ipod as continuously updating and it won't stop. the message in the itunes window says "updating ipod. do not disconnect." and it doesn't seem to be updating anything because that message doesn't switch to the status message that shows progress.
is this a glitch or something ? i have a 5G 60 GB and the latest version of itunes.

    Hi all,
I'm having the same problems as everyone else (updated to 5.0, and now my iPod is on the fritz). I tried the apple solution Gopha mentioned above, but to no avail. I have the (!)/folder icon appearing, so when I plug into the USB port on my PC, iTunes does not automatically start up. When I manually open it, the program freezes. I have tried plugging the iPod in in the "Disk mode", but that does nothing either. When I try to update to the new iPod software (9/6/05), I get "iPod service error". I can not look at the iPod as a disk in My Computer.
I tried reloading iTunes/iPod software, and that didn't help either. I have everything backed up on my PC (Dell Inspiron 1150, Pentium 4, Windows XP Home), so I have no problem "restoring" the iPod. But as I mentioned, I get the service error message when I try.
I feel that Apple must have picked up on this problem by now with all the posts on this topic I've seen. Does anyone have any advice/help???!!!
Few more things: I cannot listen to music on the iPod when its by itself, or when plugged into the computer (!/folder icon on the iPod screen). iPod is 20G, click wheel. I have about 1,000 songs on it currently (so plenty of room left)
    Much Thanks
    Just saw on another post:
    http://news.com.com/iTunesupgrade+has+usersgriping/2100-1046_3-5863637.html
Looks like they're aware of the "BUG".

  • Iphone/Ipad/ipod update problems

Ever since I bought my first Ipod about 6 years ago I have had trouble updating also with my Ipad and two 3gs phones . Whenever I try to update them they always get stuck in recovery mode and an error 1604 comes up which means that their is something that apple doesnt like about my usb connection so I then spend the next few nights trouble shooting and retrying until all of a sudden it works.
All my other phones Ive had all updated perfectly through the same usbs, Samsung,Motorola.
So today I got an Iphone 5 (the wifes choice not mine) and got home and plugged it in to sync contacts etc and got the "update for your device available" notification. Foolishly I clicked on update and have now spent the last 5 or so hours with a phone in recovery mode trying all the usual things I do to get it to work including updating to latest I tunes which seems to freeze up almost as much as the phone, but thats another issue.
Ive tried different usb ports and the one thing that worked on my other devices which was to wait until the restore had begun and then kill Itunes with the task manager then restart Itunes then sometimes the update would complete.
I also had error message 2002 at one stage.
So I went to my neighbours house across the road and after 2 hours of restoring I got "error message 1" which I havent seen before .
So how do I fix this problem? Do I have to go to an apple store every time i want to update? Do I buy a new computer and hope that the usb configuration is one that apple products might work with or do I take the phone back and get a Droid???
    Thanks for your help.
Ps. Sorry about the long-winded question/rant.

So I just gave it one last try. This time I waited for the restore to begin, then I killed itunes with the task manager and unplugged the phone at the phone  not the usb end. Then I plugged the  phone back in then restarted itunes and did the restore and hey presto it worked.
Still alot of ballsing around for something that should be easy.
Just gave myself 10 points , now I feel all warm and fuzzy.

  • 1.2.1 Ipod Update Problem and AC Adapter

I have a 30GB Ipod Photo, I plugged into my PC at work, ran Itunes and it said I should update my Ipod. I ran the updater, and it updated my Ipod.
BIG Problem: It said I had to have an AC Adapter to "Flash" my Ipod. I'm at work, dont have an AC Adapter, so the entire day can't use the ipod, can't restart it, nothing works. Get home, can't find the AC Adapter. So what, basically I can't use my Ipod until I get an AC Adapter?
Anyone at Apple test this update?? How about a warning BEFORE you install that says you need an AC adapter to complete. I've done several updates to my Ipod and never got this message.

    hi elgoom!
I did this update and then my iPod told me to plug it into an AC adapter. I did, however, nothing happened... It still displays the "plug it into an AC adapter" icon.
i just did the 2006-01-10 update with attractive beast earlier today. what you should be seeing is the adapter icon replaced with the Apple icon. then a little progress bar shows up under the Apple. when it completes you get your standard display back.
... let's try checking on some simple things first. have you tried plugging the AC adapter into a different wall socket and seeing if the flash will go through then?
do you have a different AC adapter available? if so, will the flash complete if you plug the ipod into that one?
    keep us posted.
    love, b

  • Lastest video ipod update - Problem

I have updated my 60g video ipod with the latest update and now my video ipod is not acting right. And will not see any videos that I have placed on my ipod from my library, meaning not bought from itunes, although those show up fine.
The video do show up, but as songs and not as videos.
Can I downgrade back to the prior version or do I have to wipe the ipod and reinstall? Not a happy choice...
Any one else have this issue? Not happy with this intrusive update by apple at all. This update show have come with more information than was presented.

You shouldn't have to downgrade. You're not providing much information here. You said that videos show up as songs, but not videos. I'm assuming you have these videos labeled as Music Videos, and not Movies. Right click on your non-Music Video videos, and choose Get Info. Choose the Options tab, and change the Video Kind to Movie.
    (Video Out doesn't exist.)

  • HT204266 iPod update problems

My iPod shows I have 7 updates.  When I click on update, a message pops up and says "Can not connect to iTunes Store".  I have it plugged in to my computer with iTunes opened.

Plug the iPod into a FireWire port on your computer, or an unit such as the iPod Hi-Fi, or try the instructions on this page, or take it to a retail Apple Store if one is nearby.

  • IPod Updater Code problem? iTunes not connecting with iPod.

There may be a problem with the iPod updater.
    I have a 15 GB iPod (JQ418QZLQQF)
Updated iTunes to 5.0.1.4. Connected iPod.
Got a window...told me to downloaded iPod Updater 9/23/05. Did it.
Updated iPod. iTunes would start writing and then quit. Got a window; told me to restore iPod.
Tried restore 7 times. Failed. When iTunes tried to load it stalled, then McAfee Antivirus program hung up, then got messages that it could no longer communicate with iPod ... got (-36) errors.
Got FAQ sheets. Did everything. Unplugged from internet, disabled antivirus program. No luck.
Unloaded every non-related program in RAM. No luck.
Tried iTunes and iPod in SAFE mode. No luck.
Last error message was "Attempting to copy to the disk "IPOD" failed. An unknown error occurred (-53)"
Bought 5th generation 20 GB iPod Color. Plugged it in.
Reformatted it with the 9/23/05 ipod updater. ... iTunes could not connect to it.
Tried the 9/6/05 updater. Still didn't work.
Opened the CD that it came with and installed the 6/5/05 ipod updater software. iTunes immediately recognized the new ipod and loaded songs without failure.

I ran into this on a client system yesterday. Same issue re: new songs with a dock ipod running ver 2.2.
I tried to update on three separate g4 based macs, each running 10.3.9. On one, the ipod failed to mount. On the other two, the updater gave the message {approx} "the firmware for the update is not present" when the Update button was clicked.
For no good reason, I tried using the "Update" in the Options menu instead of the button. I immediately got an administer confirmation box, gave the password, and the update proceded correctly. Monkey behavior triumphs. Got to be an installer bug. Try it and let us know if this works for you.
