HT5494 So is Apple still providing Java updates or not?

When I go to Oracle, they want to update to Java 7. This was true even before Apple was still releasing this and previous Java 6. Which one do we use? If I load the plug-in as Java 7, is Apple going to come out with another Java 6 update, like they did last time?
Somebody at Apple needs to decide if they are going to do these updates or not. Either everything should come from Oracle, or nothing.

Apple has not said one way or the other, but I suspect they will continue to update Java 6 as long as Oracle continues to update it. Of course, they've seriously reduced the functionality of Java 6 by removing the web applet plugin and the Java Preferences app. So in the future, you probably want to use Java 7 from Oracle. Just be aware that Java has proven itself very insecure lately, so you should enable it in your web browser with extreme caution only! See:

  • Will Apple still provide security updates\patches to iOS 5.1.1?

Can someone please confirm if will Apple still provide security updates and patches to iOS 5 (5.1.1)?
I really really hope the answer is YES because iOS 5 was released less then a year ago (October 12, 2011)... So I truly hope Apple is not throwing us under the bus here? I mean even Microsoft provides OS security patch support for 10 years so please NO fanboys or Apple defenders... just be real.

iOS 6 works perfectly fine for me.
    Regarding your maps issue,
Apple is constantly working on improving their new Maps service, but until it reaches the level of finesse necessary to be usable, take a look at some alternatives.
If you would like to send a suggestion to Apple, please go to http://www.apple.com/feedback or you can Report a Problem via the Maps app by tapping the bottom right.
Bing Maps offers a very good maps service with Bird's Eye, a feature similar to Flyover. It's arguably better than Google Maps.

  • HT5242 I keep getting an error, and the Java Update will not install. What can I do?

I keep getting an error, and the Java Update will not install. What can I do?

Never mind. I kept trying, and finally when I opened "About This Mac" and clicked the software update from there (as opposed to the "Software Update" just below), the Java update finally worked.

  • Java Update does not install latest build

Kind of an odd bug I suppose: Java Update only installs up to build 6, even though build 7 is listed on the site. It's possible that the latest build hasn't been placed on the update servers yet, though personally I think there's a problem with Java update itself. It doesn't seem to need to sequentially install the builds either (though, what developer does that anymore?) as after updating to build 6, Java Update stated that it was the latest version.

A month is too long to have failed updates, ellencav. I know you mentioned you have a Samsung Galaxy 3. Can you clarify if you have the Note 3 or galaxy S 3? Was a warranty replacement offered through Verizon tech support? This way, as long as you met the terms of the warranty, a replacement would be shipped to you and the defective device would be shipped back.

  • Apple ID for app updates does not match new Apple ID cannot get updates

Can someone tell me how to get the Apple ID for app updates to match new changed Apple ID?
I can get new apps with new ID but not updates....old ID shows up and will not accept password.

Your advice is to change my Apple ID again?
No I gave you a link to try to get a new password to work with the old Apple ID.
And are you saying that I will not be able to access any updates for apps that were acquired under the original Apple ID and password?
I am saying that the only way to update apps acquired with the old Apple ID is with the old Apple ID. You cannot update them with a new Apple ID.

  • Copying and Enabling Selected Updates from Apple Still Copies ALL Updates

    Hello,
On the attempt to become a bit more independent from outside servers (e.g. e-mail, web, file sharing), I bought Mac OS X 10.6 Server.
Being new to server and while my current Internet setup does not allow me to do much from the outside, I at least played a bit around to see how things are to work and also came across the Software Update service. As it is stated, this service is to preserve bandwidth by downloading the updates available from Apple.
Now, according to the built-in help one can select to disable "Copy all (new) update from Apple" in order to only enable selected updates. However, this still downloads ALL available updates on my hard drive including stuff for items I do not own, possess or have access to (e.g. Xsan, Mac OS X 10.4.11 update).
How is that preserving bandwidth then?!?
What is the "Copy all (new) update from Apple" feature for, if when disabled it still downloads everything once you click the "Copy Now" button?!? Once downloaded, I do not mind if unnecessary items are enabled or not in the end, but I do mind the bandwidth and storage usage for such items in the first place.
Is there a way to only download certain, selected updates? I can enable them manually, if I have to.
Thanks to anyone trying to help!

Hacking an iPhone to unlock it or for any other reason is against Apple's license agreement for the iPhone, is not supported by Apple directly or indirectly via these discussions, and voids the warranty.
Installing a firmware update on an iPhone that has been hacked to be unlocked re-locks the iPhone to the carrier the iPhone was sold as carrier locked with - in this case with AT&T. If the hack that was used to unlock your iPhone has not been updated to be compatible with firmware update 3.0, which also changes the baseband, you are in trouble.
No one here will be able to provide you any help since as I already provided, hacking an iPhone is against Apple's license agreement for the iPhone and these discussions are provided and moderated by Apple.

  • Does apple still let you update to 6.0

because 5.1.1 will not work.. i get 3194 error.
    thank you.

Apple only supports updat/restoring the latest iOS for your model device.
For an iPhone 3G and later that is iOS 6.1.3. You can't go to 6.0.

  • If your phone has been flashed to Boost mobile, does Apple still provide care or does that void out the warranty?

I have to leave the plan I am on so I thought about just switching carriers, but a friend suggested that I flash my phone to Boost mobile. However, I am not sure I want to do that because I am not 100% sure that I'd be able to walk into an Apple store and receive help.

Changing the carrier to which your iPhone is assigned, without the carrier's approval, is not only a violation of your contract with the carrier, which may have civil liability penalties, it also is an unauthorized modification of your iPhone, which voids any and all support from Apple, for anything related to your iPhone.

  • Newest Java update does not support Tiger?

I am running Tiger 10.4.11 on a MacBook Pro. I needed to install the latest update to Java (Java for Mac10.4 Release 9) to run a within browser internet calling service. After I installed the update, I still could not login to the website, and it still asked me to update Java. When I wrote the support for the website they indicated to me:
"I've tried myself and it seems that the latest java is not supporting 10.4.11 Tiger anymore, but you need the latest java for running FriendCaller. For 10.4.11 their is no support."
Is this accurate? What can I do about this problem if it is indeed the case?
    Thanks,
    Chuleta

  • Latest Java update will not work in Firefox but does in IE

I have followed all the trouble shooting instructions in Firefox and on the Java site but no applications believe that Java is installed in firefox.

hello phillbatts, the java plugin and javascript are two very different things: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Javascript_is_not_Java
if websites report that javascript is disabled, try the following: enter '''about:config''' into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named '''javascript.enabled'''. make sure that it is set to '''true''' and else double-click it in order to change its value.
if this doesn't help, please also make sure that you don't have any extensions (like noscript) installed, that might block the execution of javascript or other active content...

  • Does Apple Still Support FCP7 Software Updates?

I'm selling a Mac Pro and after wiping it clean of my identity, I want to install FCP7 from the original disks. Does Apple still support software updates, or do they reside somewhere?

Use the Software Update and you can find it.  Or...

  • HT1338 Software Update is not finding latest release (April 3) of Java 2012 001 Update for Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 on iMac mid-2007 that downloaded automatically on iMac mid-2011

Software Update is not finding latest release (April 3) of Java 2012 001 Update on my iMac mid-2007, but it downloaded it automatically on my iMac mid-2011 yesterday. Both are running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3. When I try to download the update manually from Apple on my older iMac, it downloads okay, but when I try to open the dmg file, I get a warning message saying that opening this update may make your computer LESS secure. Do you want to proceed? (I did not).
Why would Software Update find this update and install it automatically on one iMac and not the other, if they are both running the same version of Mac OS X Lion? I checked the installed software list on my old iMac and the Java update does not appear there. Why would this update make my old iMac less secure?

Recall that Java is not installed as part of Lion.
You have to install it (and are asked if you want to) when you first try to run some java stuff.
Is it possible that the iMac 2007 does not have Java yet?
Try this: open Terminal (from Utilities) and type java -version (exactly like that, with the space before the hyphen).
    What do you get?
Consistent with this theory is that the dmg thing gave you the warning - installing java might make your machine less secure because java is a means for bad guys to try to do bad things to your computer.

In this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/20074533 three different solutions were used, all of which would seem to be rather complicated. Hopefully a simple solution will show up soon.
