HT5503 What is a kernel?
I am very curios on what a kernel is showed up several updates and curios to what it is
A kernel panic is an unrecoverable problem in Mac OS that causes it to stop working. It's like the BSOD. Read this guide

[solved] What monitors the kernel?
I'm trying to understand how my computer works.
The kernel manages how CPU cycles are time-shared between running applications. To do this, it has to be 'running', therefore using up cycles itself. But then every system call has to go through the kernel... so the kernel must have a big 'share' of the cpu time. What kind of sharing goes on? Does it slice very tiny slices, running in every other slice? How does it do it? How does the kernel manage itself?
Last edited by peets (2008-01-16 23:11:16)Well, I'm a CS major and have begun touching on low-level hardware and kernels, so I will try to describe it to the best of my abilities.
The Kernel is just a program like any other. It is written very low level, C and Assembly for linux and then compiled specifically to the hardware on which it runs. X86, Sparc, PPC, etc.
Writing low level like that can give you precise control over the instruction set architecture, and thus give you access to all that the hardware has made available. The Kernel will run in what is considered "supervisor mode" as described above. This is physically wired into processors, and gives the program in supervisor mode access to the hardware directly. Other programs executed (user-level programs) will be run with user-level permissions and will not have direct access to hardware level Interrupt Requests and peripheals etc.
Now, this supervisor/user-level coded in the hardware is not to be confused with root permissions in linux. Root permissions in linux provides access to parts of the file system otherwise not available.. But this is a much higher level and further abstracted idea, as this is all within the kernel program, not the hardware of the computer.
So the kernel is running in supervisor mode, and has direct access and control over all the hardware the computer has available. This means that if another program... say Open Office (running in user-mode) needs to print than it must make the request to print through the kernel. Such operations are called TRAP requests. It's when a user-level program makes a System Call to the operating system/kernel to take care of any needs of the hardware. These system calls are available to all user-level programs, some of which in linux will require root level privileges. NOTE: This is a security decision made by the programmers of the kernel. All OS's do this is some fashion or another.
In addition to managing peripherals and what not, the kernel has precise control over both the memory and the CPU. Keep in mind that the CPU is simply doing simple instructions one after another at a rate of say... 1 billion instructions per second (1 Ghz). Each of these instructions as said is usually fairly simple, but doing so many so quickly can give the illusion of complexity. On the memory side of things, the Kernel will manage it's own location in memory, making it off-limits to user-level programs. This prevents programs from inserting their own code into off-limit locations in memory. The only kernel instructions that user-level programs are able to Jump to are those TRAP Vectors (System Calls) as mentioned above.
As far as the rest of the memory goes, the kernel will have very sophisticated memory management that decides where in memory to place any user-executed programs and will also manage shared memories (such as the clipboard). It will attempt to keep the memory as de-fragmented as possible, which in itself could be discussed in an entirely different post. It will initially give programs a small amount of memory, but one of the TRAP requests a user-program can make is for access to more memory. This is if the HEAP in the running program has become too small for the data they are trying allocate.
Another issue to touch on is the STACK. This is another memory ideology that could require it's own post, but it is important to not that there is both a user-stack (each running program has one) and a system stack (used by the kernel).
Well, I know I just barely touched on memory, but as I said it can be a long discussion in and of itself. Best practices are constantly debated and changed (same goes for process management). One thing i personally have not learned about yet is pipelining/multithreading. I understand how to code for it, but not how the hardware handles it yet. We've only been learning the concepts i discussed above on a simple single-procedure processor, the LC-3.
So erm... I hope this helps, I haven't even re-read this so I suspect i'll be making edits. If it's unclear feel free to ask for clarification.
Regards,
Shane

What causes my kernel panic?
Several times a week my Mac crashes. I have not been able to provoke a crash; they seem random. The latest report and the result of Etrecheck follows:

Avast is also installed and must be removed if you expect your Mac to function normally. Uninstall it using the uninstaller program included with its downloaded installation package, which will remove it completely.
In addition, that Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file
Update OS X. Version 10.10.3 is the latest release. To learn how to update OS X read Update OS X and App Store apps on your Mac - Apple Support.
The recovery procedure that follows will obviate the need to correct all those separate problems and is likely to require the least amount of your time and interaction.
It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.
There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device. -
What does my Kernel Panic mean?? Please help!!1
My 12" PowerBook is having some problems and gets the kernel panic message pretty often. Can anyone help me decipher this kernel log message?:

Thanks for any help that anyone has!
-mikeI don't know what Kernel means
The kernel of an operating system (regardless which one: Unix (OS X), Windows, OS/2, etc.) represents its innermost level. It is the base software anything else is built on (drivers, system utilities and finally the graphical user interface and all applications you work with).
So a kernel panic isn't coverable by any security mechanism. If one of your applications fails, the operating system gives an error message to you and in an ideal case, just closes the erroneous applications while you can still work with your computer.
A kernel panic however affects the foundation of the operating system, and this is the reason why you have no other choice than rebooting. And since all system services are stopping immediately in such a case, you may lose data (that has not be written to disk already) and even sometimes destroy files (that have been accessed at the time the kernel panic occurred). -
I haven't yet had a chance to call Apple Support about my restart problems (G5 dual just restarts on its own sometimes, like someone pulled the plug).
It just happened again, when I was watching a video online, and in my system log, I had this:
KernelEventAgent[42]: tid 00000000 received unknown event
anyone know what that means? BTW, I was reading about kernel panics, and I have no kernel panic log anywhere.
Thanks,
JuliIt's possible the power going to your Mac isn't as good as it should be.
You could have to many devices on one "line" coming from your circuit breaker, you could have a lose or wet power wire outside that's giving your Mac little "brownouts". It could be your UPS or your surge protector going out.
I surely hope your not using one of those flimsy extension cords that have no grounding wire.
Then it could also be a short somewhere in the house that current is going into "ground" and the Mac is reacting to that.
What you can do is run a three prong heavy duty extension cord directly from a outlet that's a "dedicated circuit" meaning it's a line directly from your circuit breaker to your Mac without anything in between.
In new home wiring, a dedicated outlet looks like any other with three prongs, but the left top one has a little horizontal notch. Refrigerators, garbage disposals, and air conditioners usually have this dedicated outlet because when they turn on they draw so much current at one time that it can cause a fire it the circuit is overloaded.
So I would do this and see if the problems continue, then I would see if I could take the computer elsewhere, like another newer house or office to eliminate the possibility of bad power source.
If that doesn't resolve the problems, then the next course of action is to clone your boot drive to a external and reinstall Mac OS X Tiger fresh, update and install all apps from fresh sources, files from the clone.
How to clone instructions here
This way you eliminate a software problem.
If the problems continue after that, your looking at a hardware problem which Apple will need to take a look at your machine if it's stock.
If you added RAM yourself Apple doesn't cover it, but you might get it checked out with everything else.
If your Mac is new you might want to try hold option and booting from Tiger Install disk #1, which you'll get a AHT (Apple Hardware Test) to boot from, run the extended tests overnight.
(AHT gets updated with Mac OS X and firmware updates, unfortunately not the one on your disk as it's write protected. So it is possible AHT will report a error when there is not, it's a firmware or OS change responsible. So check the AHT version is compatible with your machine and OS level before dragging it in for repair.)
Write down any errors you see to tell Apple Support.
Make sure you clone your boot drive and backup files often and before sending the machine to Apple then erase the internal drive.
If you remove your hard drive and it's been the cause of the problems, then Apple won't know and won't replace it. So it's best just to give them a empty drive and keep a clone at home. When the Mac and drive is returned you can option boot from the clone and reverse clone to the internal. -
What kind of Kernel Panic is this?
30 minutes ago my Macbook suddenly restarted and showed the "Your computer restarted because of a problem..." screen. However, didn't appear any alert or message report after the crash. So I couldn't check what did cause the problem. So I am in the Console application right now, but my question is from where I should copy the log text so you could tell me what created the problem?.
3 facts that maybe apply to this, or not:
1- 4 hours ago before the crash I upgraded my Macbook Pro ram from 4GB to 8GB.
2- I was using XCode and iPhone simulator while this happened.
3- 4 days ago my macbook showed a little GPU glitch on the left side, before typing my password on the login screen. But after that was perfectly fine.Process: com.apple.AmbientDisplayAgent [266]

What is the kernel exactly?
I know the kernel is the main part of the OS, but can you point to a file or files and say "that is the kernel"? Or is it more of an abstract concept?
It's an abstract concept.
A Unix kernel — the core or key components of the operating system — consists of many kernel subsystems like process management, memory management, file management, device management and network management.
There is certainly a subset of files (RAM and ROM) that comprise the kernel in Darwin. You probably could find more information by querying Apple's Darwin Mailing List or consulting the Wikipedia entry.
However, none of this directly answers your question whether the (Darwin's) kernel is a single file. Apple's Developer Site has some info, namely this
The Mac OS X kernel is the fundamental layer of the Mac OS X operating system. This environment includes the I/O Kit, the Mach kernel, and a BSD personality layer. Apple discourages developers from programming in the kernel, because kernel bugs can reduce the stability of the entire system. Many device drivers can be written entirely in user space and should be, where possible.
which leads me to believe that the OS X kernel is not a single file. But what do I know?
Beyond this, it's all "Here Be Dragons" to me. -
What are the kernel option required for udev in 2.6.28 kernel
Hi All,
I just want to know the exact options that we need to enable in the
kernel configuration for the latest udev. Some options specified in
http://webpages.charter.net/decibelshel … rimer.html is
not available ( or changed position ) in the 2.6.28 kernel.
I know that copying the existing config file from linux distro will do
it. But want to know about the exact kenel modules/support needed for
udev to get everything working. Please help.B wrote:
OK I was definitely not qualified to answer that question .
May I ask what you are trying to do exactly?
If you are rebuilding your own kernel you might as well check the documentation in the kernel building utilities (gconfig, qconfig, xconfig, ...). Granted, it takes longer, but you get to know your way around. Also, I don't think those options are specific to 2.6.28 either - it would surprise me if they get altered so frequently you'd need to inquire about a specific kernel version.
I am using the kernel 2.6.28. Thats why I specified the kernel version as 2.6.28. Yes, those options are generic to latest version of 2.6 kernel. But things were changed from 2.6.13 kernel and again as per the comment from kay sievers, it again going to change in next version.
Yeah, SIGNALFD only in the next, the to be released version
http://www.spinics.net/lists/hotplug/msg02162.html
I am just searching to find out the kernel configuration options to get the udev working. The udev primer is for 2.6.13 and I know there are lots of changes in newer version of kernel/udev. I know how to build kernel and I like menuconfig than the GUI utilities.
Thanks for all the answers/comments. -
HT5503 Whats the best way to free up space on the iphone 3gs
I can't update my iphone with the 6.0 because I don't have enough memory. Whats the best way to free up space? I have already deleted some pictures and music..
Delete whatever files you don't need anymore and transfer data to an external hard drive. You can download and run OmniDiskSweeper. This application shows you all the files on your harddrive and what files are taking up the most space, just open the application and run it on your hardrive.

Excellent user tip > Viruses, Trojans, Malware - and other aspects of Internet Security: Apple Support Communities
Having one anti virus software installed is not necessary, two is overkill.
If your Mac contintues to generate kernel panics after uninstalling Symantec and Avast, the uninstallers do not always delete all the associated files.
Backup your important data then reformat the drive and reinstall OS X using OS X Recovery -

What does this Kernel Panic report mean? What can I do?
Hi,
I've had my MacBook (Late 2013 Retina 15" MacBook Pro) crash a few times, resulting in a kernel panic. I know a fair share about software, programming, website but I know absolutely nothing about crashing, etc.. All I know is that it crashed very suddenly, resulting in a grey screen talling me a Kernel Panic had occurred.
I was hoping someone could make anything out from this? I saw current thread was 'Skype' but I wasn't using it at the time, it was just in the background. This has happened before and I may not have been using it then. (It's not set to open at boot.) I was using a weather app ("Living Earth") at the moment it crashed but I only installed that yesterday and it's crashed before then.
Here's the Kernel Panic Report from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

As I say, it's happened a few times before (twice recently but also a while ago).
I'd be really thankful if anyone could share some light on this.I have noticed this. One time it crashed when using a video app such as VLC, and another time when changing desktops between an app playing a video and say Skype or Google Chrome (I can't be sure which).
Here's some more information about my Mac if it helps:
Operating System: OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks) 13C64
Model: Apple Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro 15"
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1024MB
I've noticed that my case is similar to some people's in this thread. -
HT1305 What does the kernel sign mean
My computer starts up and the monitor shows a
White screen with circle and a line thru the
Circle What does this mean? That one means it cannot boot from the drive it thinks it's supposed to boot from.
Hold the Option/alt key at powerup, what shows for boot choices? -
Can anyone help my diagnose what is causing this kernel panic?
Tried to learn how to read these from a website, but no luck. Could someone smarter than me figure this out? It's happening weekly. Thanks!
