    As long as it's not an Apple Store gift card (they can only be used in Apple's bricks-and-mortar stores and their online store) then you should be able to redeem it onto your account as per the instructions on the HT1574 page that you posted from e.g. via the Redeem button under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home on your computer's iTunes, or via the Featured tab in the App Store app (or the Music app in the iTunes store app) on your iOS device

    You can view the balance of your iTunes account : on my iPad it shows at the bottom of, for example, the Featured tab in the App Store app under my account id (or you can view your account via Settings > iTunes & App Store and it should show on the screen that you are taken to). If your balance is zero then it might not show.

    You can not merge accounts.
    Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.
