If you are planning on using iCloud to store files, forget about iCloud and use a cloud storage service like SkyDrive or Dropbox. iCloud is focused on information sync between the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac and PC instead of storing files like MobileMe. It's not worth using iCloud for this.
If you still want to set up iCloud, open Settings > iCloud, log in with your Apple ID and follow its steps

When I bought my iPad and set up iCloud I started using iMessage but when I type a note and hit send the picture that comes up is not me but some one else that I know. I don,t even have this picture in my iPhoto's so don't know where it came from. My ID picture on my MacBook pro is correct. I went to settings, then messages but did not see a place to change the picture. Any ideas?

You set the picture in Contacts.
Open Contacts, select the person then tap Edit.
Tap the photo to change it.

Recovery mode is Command & R keys after depressing and releasing the Power button for a normal startup.

My kindle does not want to open on my iPad. When I touch it - a grey screen
with kindle written in the middle appear for a few seconds. Then goes away.
I have restarted the iPad - still the same? What else can I do?

Judging by the reviews of the current version of the Kindle app you aren't the only one haveing problems with it - it looks like Amazon need to fix something with the app.
Have you tried closing the Kindle app via the iPad's multitasking bar and seeing if it works when you re-open it ? Double-click the home button to open the taskbar, and then swipe or drag the Kindle app's screen from there up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
You could also try deleting the app and redownloading it via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on it (you will then need to redownload your books in the app, assuming that it opens).

You need to set up an iCloud account before you can back it up. And you back it up directly from the device - iCloud.com has nothing to do with it. Follow the instructions in the link below to set up your iCloud account and to set up Automatic Backups:

Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content & Settings. This will bring you back to the initial setup screens, and allow you to choose Restore from iCloud Backup (see image below). Be sure you are connected to wifi and your charger as restoring may take some time to finish.

Just out of curiosity, why did you elect to use a different id?. That seems to always make things difficult. If you have not had the pad for long, or have not bought a lot of stuff Nader the new id, you might want to think about erasing all content, turn off find my phone, wiping the pad and starting over.
You can sync 2 different ids ( at least move pictures, books and music back and forth) if you are syncing through I tunes on your computer, but I don't think you can cross feed I cloud streams.

It directs me to either "Cancel" or go to "Settings" but the screen is frozen and it won't let me do either. I have removed a lot of pictures and video that I had downloaded. Then tried to reconnect it to the computer to see if another attempt would prompt a back up with less need, but that did not help.
Does anyone have any quick fix ideas?

I followed the iCloud instructions and turned on Macbook Pros' system prefs to "find my mac", turned on iPhone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. In the "Find my iphone" tab of my new iCloud account (on my Macbook Pro) my iPhone4s still won't show—but my macbook does show. I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. I can send a "sound" message to my Mac (and the Mac recieves it) but unable to see the iPhone4s from my Mac, let alone send any message. Any suggestions to get the iPhone4s device to appear in iCloud?

OK, I figured it out...I deleted the iCloud account off my iPhone (Settings, iCloud, Delete Account), and then added iCloud back in (Settings, iCloud, SignIn)....and then my email (iCloud) and "Find my phone" features worked! Nice!!!!

They will be backed up only until you backup again. iCloud is not a storage drive in the sky, it is a backup service only. If you delete the photos and videos from the camera roll, and then you backup the iPad with iCloud, you will overwrite that backup and the photos will be gone.
Import the photos to your computer if they are that important to you. iCloud is for backup only, not a storage place that you can download your photos from again once you overwrite that backup.
