How do I find out what features are not useful in my Classifier?
How do I find out what features are not useful in my Classifier? I am trying to trim down the number of features to speed up the training of my data, I have about 3700 features. I have found the Filter Based Feature Selection Module and have not been successful
in using it. I have looked through all the examples and have not been able to find any examples using the module. Will the Filter Based Feature Selection Module help me to trim features. If so how do I use it?One way to do this would be is to use a random forest classifier. Feature/variable importance can be obtained relatively easily with random forests.
Here is how you may do it in R.
> install.packages('randomForest') #install randomForest package in R if it is not already there
> library(randomForest) # reference the library
> data(mtcars) # load motor cars data that ships with
#train a random forest
> mtcars.rf <- randomForest(mpg ~ ., data=mtcars, ntree=1000,keep.forest=FALSE, importance=TRUE)
> importance(mtcars.rf)
> importance(mtcars.rf)
#You will see an output like below
%IncMSE IncNodePurity
cyl 16.168645 169.96741
disp 18.672188 260.08722
hp 17.584375 184.95007
drat 6.948743 63.54528
wt 17.818509 254.30347
qsec 4.772889 33.25546
vs 5.303058 24.39064
am 5.210181 17.36626
gear 4.619161 21.55450
carb 8.577037 28.46715
# or plot the importance as follows
> varImpPlot(mtcars.rf)
What this tells you is how important predictors/features/variables like horsepower(hp), weight(wt), no. of cylinders (cyl) is in predicting miles per gallon (mpg).
If you are wondering how the data looks like. Try this
head(mtcars) # gives first few lines of the data set.
mpg cyl disp hp drat wt ...
Mazda RX4 21.0 6 160 110 3.90 2.62 ...
Mazda RX4 Wag 21.0 6 160 110 3.90 2.88 ...
Datsun 710 22.8 4 108 93 3.85 2.32 ...
. Try this

How to deal with the rule that do not use "object" class to declear a class
I run my flex project in sonar. And there is a rule "Do not use Object class ".
I just want to know how to deal with this problem.
I mean, when I try to write a base class, I don't know which kind of class will be transfered in by reference, which type I can declear instead of "object"?Check out this example:
The moment I put in the code >> box1.addItem("hello"); << and run the application, the BusNameListener is fired. Hope this makes sense.
import java.awt.*;
import javax.swing.*;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
public class JFrameExample {
private JComboBox box1;
public JFrameExample() {
box1 = new JComboBox();
box1 .setMinimumSize(new Dimension(300, 24));
box1 .setPreferredSize(new Dimension(300, 24));
box1.addActionListener(new BusNameListener());
box1.addItem("hello");
JFrame f = new JFrame("This is a test");
f.setSize(400, 150);
Container content = f.getContentPane();
// content.setBackground(Color.white);
content.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
content.add(box1);
f.setVisible(true);
class BusNameListener implements ActionListener {
public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
JComboBox cb = (JComboBox) e.getSource();
String item = (String) cb.getSelectedItem();
if (item != null) {
JOptionPane.showInputDialog(null,
"Specify...", "File Import",
JOptionPane.OK_CANCEL_OPTION);

How do you close iPhone apps that don't seem to have a close button?
How do I ensure that an application is fully closed out?
IM+ is an example but I would like to know in general. IM plus somehow runs in the background but sometimes I want to disable it completely I"m not sure how. Same goes for facebook or safari even. My concern is that I thnk the phone slows down when too many things have been opened. Is there a way to fully force all applications closed short of rebooting?
Thanks.3rd party apps do not run in the background on the iPhone. Apps like IM+ that 'seem' to run in the background do not - your chat account is kept active by the server (not the phone) and/or push notifications via Apple's push notification server are used to alert you that there is server-side activity for the app.
So, you would just need to exit the app, and if you want to turn off notifications, use Settings > Notifications.
Also, note that you can force-quit an app - press and hold the sleep/wake button until you see the power-off slider, then release the sleep/wake button and immediately press and hold the home button for ~6 seconds, until you're returned to the home screen. -
HT201365 How do I close off apps that I have open?
Help I don't want my battery to waste away!
They changed it a bit, but you can still close apps. Double click the Home button to pull up the currently running apps. Side scroll over to the app you want to close, then swipe up on the app *window* (not the icon at the bottom). Now most of the time, unless the app is stuck and running crazy, it shouldn't hurt your battery too much to have apps open; the OS is smart enough to only allocate resources to the active apps.

How do I delete an App that did not fully install and Will Not delete in the usual fashion?
Has anyone experienced this situation: you download an App; supposedly completed it shows up on my home screen with an icon that says "loading". It cannot be opened or deleted. I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of it. It happened to be the Costco mobile app.
Hi,
If you have the Download (or .dmg) then go to System Preferences > Security an Unlock the Padlock for the General tab.
You may need to set the bottom option "Anywhere" to allow Apps not from the App Store to be installed.

I currently have QB for Mac 2011 loaded on another computer that I am trying to stop using. I have tried downloading QB 2011 from the intuit site but when I open it up on the new MBA the message is that I can't open it because it was not downloaded from the App Store. Fair enough... but I can't find it in the App Store. Any help?
I don't want to purchase another copy of it; I just want to transfer the program from one puter to the other, enter the registration code and discontinue it on the original one.
