HT5639 When will I be able to install Windows 8 on a Flash Drive and not in my HDD?

I want to install Windows 8 on a flash drive instead of my HDD, I hope this could be possible in the future.

Ask Microsoft. It's their software. Windows does not boot from external drives.

  • Can I install Windows ON a flash drive or on flash memory?

All over the internet I see questions from people wanting to install Windows from a USB flash drive with varying results, but my question is different.  I want to install Windows ON removable flash memory.  I would like to purchase a MacBook Air, but would like to also continue making use of Boot Camp without taking up too much of my limited hard drive space.  I've found fast 3.0 USB sticks and flash cards that would be nice, but can they be treated as a partition in order to install and run Windows?

Ignoring the fact that Windows doesn't really support booting from removable media (you might be able to force it if you are willing to build a custom installer), I can think of another reason you wouldn'r want to consider this.  Windows is notorious for heavy usage of the swap file, and I believe I recall reading one report where someone had managed to install Windows to a flash drive, and within 30-60 minutes, the OS had written to the swap file so much that the flash memory was beginning to fail.  Remember that each time you write to flash memory, it cases a small amount of damage to the memory, and after a significant number of writed, it will fail.  Regretfully, the Woindows swap file will cause this threshhold to be reached very quickly, and then you start getting write errors...

  • If I use a USB stick for time machine, will I be able to install Windows (using bootcamp) from the same USB?

I have a 64GB USB Stick, and I am interested in usign it with time machine. My question is, firstly, is this possible? And secondly, if I do do this, would it be possible to install windows using bootcamp from the same USB. My mother refuses to let me install windows without a backup of Mac OS X, so I really need to know if this is possible???

You need to use a drive that is larger than your Mac's internal drive for Time Machine, so a USB stick will not work.  You need to buy an external hard drive.  It's worth it. Time machine is a fantastic backup system, keeping not just a single backup, but multiple versions of your files as well (hence the need for a larger drive).

  • How to install Windows 8 from flash drive

So I want to install Windows 8 via a flash drive .  But I don't know how to do it because when I go through the bootcamp setup it asks for a disk. So is there some software to trick my computer into thinking that my flashdrive is actually a disk?

Okay.  Is it possible—if I don't have a large enough DVD—to use multiple smaller DVDs to store it?
The smallest DVD is large enough to hold the Windows installation iso.
It will cost less than $1
    Here's a pack of 50, for $15.00

  • I was using bootcamp assistant to install windows 7 via flash drive, i followed the steps, the Windows installation image was installed successfully and the boot camp partition was made andy mac restarted then i got this message "no bootable device insert

"..no bootable device insert boot disk and press any key", i restarted my mac and held options and managed to log in to my OS x again but my windows wasn't installed and when i held options while my mac was starting the usb flash drive wasn't there, what should i do? Also can i restore my usb flash drive to use it as a regular flash drive again?

    Hi Michael!
Yep, I did get this running. Not in a normal way (meaning the easy way). What I did, is that I just created the BOOTCAMP partition in OS X. Just let it format and create the partition where you would install BOOTCAMP.
After that I discovered that via a ISO program (WinClone) you can directly restore a previously created OS X boot image to your current computer. So, I installed a blank Windows 7 to my macbook pro, didint install any drivers and just let it work up then. Then I went back to os X (in macbook pro) and made a bootimage for the BOOTCAMP partition. After that I saved it to my external harddrive and wired it to my iMac. In iMac I just downloaded the same boot-image program and restored the bootimage that I made in Macbook Pro to iMac. After that I made an restart and the bootcamp section with windows worked well with my iMac. Install the bootcamp soft and you can do everything and everything works. FYI, you get the windows working via those steps, BUT if you either delete or do anything to make your bootcamp partition unworkable then you will have to repeat those steps again. But it´s fast non-the-less, so it shouldn´t be a problem for you.
If you didin´t understand anything or something doesen´t add up, send me a letter or a notification.
    Hope this helps.
    Indrek.

  • Can I install windows onto a flash drive in my ExpressCard/34 slot?

I want to buy a ExpressCard/34 SSD and install it into my MacBookPro. Then using Boot Camp, I would like to install Windows onto it. Is this possible?
Also, when installed, will the SSD Express Card be discrete and flush with the side of the MacBook Pro?

    Hi,
Windows can not be installed onto external disks. Microsoft hasn't built this feature into Windows.
Although it seems to be possible to install Windows onto an USB-connected harddisk with some tricks, and ExpressCard connected HD (SSD or not) would simply not work, sincce the needed driver to access the ExpressCard slot is not present at installation and later on not present at bootup.
    Sorry

  • Is it possible to use bootcamp to install windows on a flash drive (rather than an HD partition)?

I would like to run windows on my Mac preferably from a flash drive, or an external drive. I don't want to install it locally because I don't have enough HD space. I've found a few sites and videos that show you how to do this from a PC (like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh-F6dcXmsE) but I don't have a PC and I'd like to know if it's possible to use bootcamp to accomplish this.
Thanks very much for any help! Would be greatly appreciated.

If you have Windows-to-Go, it can be installed on an external disk, otherwise Windows licensing restricts it. Bootcamp has additional checks to enforce such licensing.
You can always install it on an internal drive first and then put the drive in a USB enclosure.

  • Install Windows 7 on external drive and boot iMac from it?

    Hi everyone,
I want to use Windows 7 on my iMac, I would like to install Windows 7 on an external drive and boot my iMac from this external drive. Is this possible? If yes, any good tutorials?
(I am aware of virtual machines, but am wondering if I can do the above).
    Thank you.

Forget trying to use Windows 7 that way.
Add another internal drive to your iMac.
Not knowing which iMac whether you have dual SATA internal like the 2011s.
Those were not "tutorials" but just whatever Google would come up with (a good start but not tutorials or dealing with 7 or hope of success, yes?)
Why? to avoid what you forsee as complications? Not "dirty" or interfere?
Windows tools exist for Windows to import and image and deploy.
You can run Mac OS on any bootable external.

  • Cannot install windows 7 as cd drive does not reganise disc

    Nudge1

    Hi
The CD/DVD driver is part of the Microsoft system and also available on the Windows 7 installation disk.
Therefore there are no special CD/DVD drivers available.
I read about this theme in different forums and also on Microsoft support forum and mostly this issue appear if the Windows system disk is faulty/damage.
I dont know from where you got this disk but I recommend you to download an Windows iso file from Microsoft server as mentioned here:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=73726
Then you could create own Windows installation disk or USB flash memory stick
The serial key which you got with the Windows disk could be used for activation.

  • When I format hard disk while installing windows it shows an error?

When I format hard disk while installing windows it shows an error and says that windows can't be installed to this hard disk, but I have installed windows before. How can I install windows?

You are getting this message because you are trying to create an iCloud account on a PC by signing with your Apple ID.  You can only sign into an existing account on a PC.  You first have to create iCloud account on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) running iOS 5 or higher, or on a Mac running OS X Lion (10.7.5) or higher.  After creating your account on one of these devices you will then be able to sign into the account using this ID on your PC.

  • Deleting Boot Camp Partition to make a new larger one- Will I be able to reinstall Windows 7 on it?

This may be more of a Windows question, but I'll ask it here. Right now, I have a Boot Camp partition on my iMac with Windows 7 installed on it. I want to dedicate more harddrive space to the partition, but can't make it larger. So, I need to delete the old one and make a whole new one. If I do that, will I be able to install Windows 7 on the new partition, or is the licence used up from when I originally installed it?
    Thanks

Since you reinstall the same Windows 7 license onto the same computer it should be no problem.
Worst case would be that you have to call Microsoft to activate the new Windows 7 installation, but telling them that it is a reinstall should be enough.
Make sure to use the BootCamp Assistant for deleting the current BootCamp partition and for making the new one.

  • Cant install windows with 2 hard drives attached

i have an sata drive that i use for boot drive and ata for back up. i can not install windows on the sata drive if the ata drive is hooked up. windows only sees the ata drive. it will not give me a choice to install on the sata. if i unhook the ata i can install just fine on the sata. does anyone have any ideas why?
it's like when i have windows installed on the sata drive, then the windows xp pro cd does see it and lets me install on that drive only, it won't let me choose sata or ata. but if there is no OS installed on anything it only goes to the ata drive. i only want to install windows on the sata drive and do not want to keep unhooking my ata drive constantly when i reinstall windows on the sata.
    can someone please help?

Danny you don't have to stay out, I just already said stuff and you told me to do something i already said i did.
Here is my current settings to get it to show my ata drive in windows and i boot from the sata cus windows is on it. currently when i install windows if no OS is on either drive it will auto install on the ata and i don't want that. i want to have a choice what drive and where to install on which means i would always install on the sata drive. but it just installs on the ata not giving me a choice. if windows is installed on the sata already then it will offer me that drive only and not allow me to select the ata. when i do a complete reformat reinstall i must unhook the ata drive and then it will work on the sata drive.
on chip ata mode - legacy
    ata config- sata only
sata keep enabled - yes - greyed out. i had to mess with other native or something mode and change it to yes in order to get it like this and work for me. why?
pata keep enabled - yes- adjustable
    pata channel selection - both
combined mode option - pata 1st channel - greyed out
sata ports definition - p0-1st./p1-2nd. adjustable
config sata as raid - no, greyed out.
is this a weird set up? and exactly how do i get it so i never have to unhook my ata drive again?
each drive they are all on their own channels. ata by itself, dvdrw by itself and sata by itself. all master.

  • Can I install windows on another hard drive?

So, I just purchased a 1TB hard drive and was wondering if I could install windows on to the new hard drive and leave my mac hard drive (128GB) just OS X. Is there any way to do this through Boot Camp?

Installing Windows on an external drive is not supported.
Neither of MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013) - Technical Specifications or MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013) - Technical Specifications have a built-in Optical drive, so you will need to use a USB2 disk, Bootcamp Assistant and a Windows ISO to create a USB installer and install it on the internal disk.
