it is winter 2014 now, i am planning to buy a mid 2012 macbook pro 15 in. do you think i can still buy applecare for it? I cant check if my mac is eligible yet because i don't have the serial number. I ordered it from amazon.

Best way to check is with the serial number. If it is a NEW computer, then you should be able to. If it is a USED computer, then chances are slim.
My recommendation: Call AppleCare once you get your computer and give them the serial number. Make sure you have your confirmation of Purchase as well.

Is there anyway to either trade in your old Macbook Pro for a new version, or get a new power cord when the old one has been damaged?

You can always get a price on what an Apple affiliate would give you for your old MacBook Pro by going to http://www.apple.com/recycling/gift-card/faq.html and reading the instruction for the reuse program. Or you can sell your old one on eBay (that's what I did - you'll get more for it). Apple doesn't do a simple trade-in.
Your cheapest route is just to buy a new adapter. If you don't know which adapter to get, call Apple and they can tell you, or visit your local Apple Store. They're about $80.

Hi, I'm wondering if I can download OS X Lion for my old Macbook Pro? I don't understand enough about the spec requirements.
I have the Intel Core Duo, not the Intel Core 2 Duo. My guess is that I can't, but just checking with people who know much better than I.

Your Core Duo processor is only capable of running 32-bit applications. Lion requires that the processor is capable of 64-bit operations. If you're running Snow Leopard that's as far as you can go I'm afraid.

"old" MacBook Pro VS. "new" MacBook Pro

I can't seems to find the specs. for the "old" MacBook Pro. My local Mac dealer has a $200 discount on the "older" ones. Just wondering what's different? Just the processor?

i dont think the difference on the new macbook pros and the old ones is the kind of memory or hardrive...if u order one right now u can still get the 100gb hd and 2x512mb sticks... i think the only difference now is that u can choose between glossy screen and non-reflective screen...and of course not heat or whine....

I killed my computer with coffee. It's out of waranty and applecare has run out. It's a 4 year old Macbook Pro. Any idea whether it makes sense to try and fix it?

Nothing works at all. When I spilled the coffee I shut it down, unplugged everything, turned it over and put paper towels beneath it to drain. Made the mistake of turning it back on after a couple of hours. It worked but emitted strange noises from the internal speakers. Turned it back off, but have not been able to turn it back on since. I disassembled the entire macbook yesterday, found coffee stains on the keyboard components. Tried to turn it on and get nothing. The only sign of life is the battery indicator. When I press the button the series of green lights come on, but that's it. Thanks for your responses. Jaylloyd

I used migration assistant for old MacBook Pro to New MacBook Pro

Today, after being on the phone to applecare I uses migration assistant to copy files, applications etc from my old macbook pro to my new one using firewire, but only somethings copied for example, none of my photos, or music came over and also a lot of the software is asking for verification and codes etc. When the applecare person asked me to restart the old macbook pro holding down the "t" key, when it restarts all it shows is a firewire icon bouncing around on the screen like a screen saver, giving me no access to the old mac and therefore having to choose the transfer "from a time machine back up or other disk" option instead of the "from another mac" option, could that be the problem? Has anyone else experiamced this?

I did choose "other disk" cause it wouldn't let me choose the "from another mac" option. I'm thinking this is why not all of my stuff transfered? Also is it strange that the old mac just had the firwire icon bouncing around on the screen the whole time?

I discovered how to enter the track titles onto my newer MacBook Pro, and was so pleased! But when I tried to do the same with the other laptop, it failed.
What I did, basically, was what the Apple Help suggested--choose iTunes General Preferences, etc.etc. And yes, I did upgrade the old laptop to the newest iTunes version.
Am I just wasting my time here? Is there some reason why an older Mac Pro will not do what the newer one will, with regard to iTunes?
My older laptop is a 2.6 GHz Core Duo; it has 36 GB of "memory available." The newer one a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7. It has 284 GB of memory available.

The files copied fine, but when I tell iTunes on the Air to look at the external drive for the library, it doesn't find anything. What I copied was the entire iTunes Media folder. So, how do I move the necessary iTunes files from my old Pro to a external drive so I can access them from my new Air? Whew!

After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

How can I find out the serial number for my FCE 4.0 that came with my old MacBook Pro?

When I try and open my old FCE projects on my new MacBook Pro, a dialog box pops up and asks me to input the serial number for my Final Cut Express program. The software came pre-loaded on my old MacBook Pro which died. Luckily, my local Apple store was able to transfer the fcp files to my new MacBook Pro, which came with FCP X installed. I just can't open those files without the serial number of the FCE 4.0 program.

It is almost impossible to transfer FCE as there are so many essential hidden files that workers in an Apple Store will know nothing about. The app needs to be installed from the original DVD.
Other than buying another copy your only chance (very remote) is to contact the Apple Store and see if they are able to get a replacement number from Apple.

Old Black Macbook for a New Macbook Pro?

about 5 or 6 months i got a black macbook and i have 3 years of warranty but the motherboard crashed on me out of the random so im just wondering can take my old black macbook for a new macbook pro and pay the difference?

Apple will typically allow a return within 14 days of your purchase... which is basically what you would need to do if you wanted to make an exchange. You would basically return your old one and buy the new one. As the previous poster mentioned, at this point, you won't be able to achieve this working directly with Apple. As your machine is 5-6 months old, there is wear to consider... it is basically no longer a new machine. Apple stores are not equipped to "appraise" used machines.

HT1296 I just bought a new MacBook Pro and moved data over from my old MacBook Pro. Everything seemed fine at first but Outlook 2011 for Mac will not run. It just flashes the Outlook logo briefly and then closes. Help!

Everything seemed to work fine after moving everything over from my old MacBook Pro at first but I cannot run Outlook 2011 for Mac. The logo displays briefly and then the app closes. It never really even gets anything loaded other than the little logo.

Try removing and reinstalling Outlook
