I am running software update for iTunes 11.0.3 but it's taking forever to complete the last step "writing files"
Anyone know why? should I stop it and start again?

Could it be settings that need to be adjusted somewhere? I'm using osx lion 10.8.3 and google chrome.

Do you mean web pages, or documents created with teh Apple word processing app Pages. Makes a huge difference in troubleshooting suggestions.

It's been a few days since the original post. If you use Software Update again now, do you still have this problem?
Also, what is the name and version number of the update? If you can't get Software Update to do it for some reason, you can search for that update on Apple Support, then download and install it manually.
Before you do that, run Disk Utility (which is on Applications/Utilities). Select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and go to the First Aid tab. Click Verify Disk. This will check to make sure there is nothing is wrong with your startup disk. If there is a problem reported, that may be causing the problem with Software Update.

Why has this update been installed without my knowledge? Why wasn't I given the opportunity to refuse the update? Isn't this update meant to stop this unauthorised access to my computer? Has this given back door access for ASIO, NSC, MI6 to my computer?

So what are your preferences set as regarding updates?
And, are you running ML as shown in your profile?
And, I downloaded and installed this update because there was a possible security issue; however, I have all automatic software update checks and downloads turned off, so i downloaded it manually as it was critical to install it as long as you are using the internet.
Has this given back door access for ASIO, NSC, MI6 to my computer?
Why would you suspect that?

If you turn off Java in all your browsers and make absolutely sure you don't download and run any standalone Java apps, then the update probably isn't essential, but otherwise it is, since at least some exploits do exist in the wild; they're not just theoretical.

Have you reset you iPad,or tried deleting the apps that are crashing and then opening them again. Or closing them and reopening them. Also clear Safari and see it that helps. There have been a few other posts like yours , and I can't figure out why it happens to some ipads and not others. I have not even seen what happens with a "crash" occurs and I use mine all the time. Every time Firefox opened

I had this problem once before, And now again.
The only thing I did different, was Instead of shutting down my computer, I click on Log off User.
Ever since then I have noticed windows XP is taking longer to load, and so is Firefox.
