HT5824 Merging all my contacts on my iphone and those in iCloud seems impossible, I'm i doing something wrong here?

I am having difficulty merging all my contacts: some on my phone, and others in my iCloud account. is there a way to do this?

Have you tried turning contact syncing off (settings > iCloud), choosing keep on phone when prompted then re-enabling cotact syncing and choosing merge when prompted.

I have my Outlook set up with 4 sets of contacts. The main one that I use at my desktop everyday is just called Contacts, but I have 3 other groups with different names. What they share is that I rarely need to use them. They are either specific to a topic/activity, or they are in a file of "Seldom Used" because I just don't really need them at my fingertips any longer. My iPhone, though, mergers all of them into one big, fat contact list on my phone. Is there a way to only sync with my current, active Contacts file and ignore the others? Thank you for answering my question, now I know that only iCloud contacts are synced with iCloud. Going forward, how can I make sure that when I create a new contact that it is included in the iCloud group.
My iphone is backed up (synced) to PC at work so all my contacts are saved in that PC. Can you help me understand what you mean by "If your iOS device can be synced with your PC, sync all your contacts to your contact application and move them between groups there." Can you tell me how I can move the contacts between the groups? Sorry this is all so new to me and I am so lost!! I dont know what the contact application is.... I must sound so dumb. I'm really not in other areas in my life - LOL.

make an album titled whatever you want and then go to photos. select the photos you want and click the arrow ponting up on the left habnd corner. move them to the album you created and once your finished navigate to albums. once in your album go to the top right and click slideshow. Go to Settings>iCloud, sign in with your Apple ID to create your account if you haven't already done so, turn Contacts on and choose Merge with iCloud when prompted. If you are syncing contacts from an external account (Gmail, Yahoo, exchange, etc.) you will need to take additional steps to add them. Let me know if that's the case.

If you log into Icloud.com, are all your contacts correct there? If the answer is Yes, I would then turn contacts OFF on your phone, and then turn them back on. Do not merge, but replace with Icloud content.
This is usually the quickest way to edit a bunch of contacts, through the web interface.

If you deleted the account by going to Settings>icloud, scrolled to bottom of page and tapped Delete Account, then all you have to do is go to the same page an sign in using the same ID; be sure Contacts is turned on.

When I purchased my iphone 4S, I had all my old phone's information transfer over to my new phone.
I organized my address book on my mac powerbook and then hoped to sync my computer's address book to my phone - in hopes of erasing all the junky contacts on my iphone and only having the my address book contacts on my phone.
I did all I could trying to make this happen (through iTunes) but it hasn't erased/replaced all of the contacts on my phone - I believe since my phone is synced to icloud. So I'm stuck with a very unorgaized contacts list on my phone...
How can I make it so I only have the contacts from my address book on my phone?

Also, I just noticed that syncing my phone effected my calendar in that all my events now repeat. So instead of having one event schedule on a day, I have two of the same events scheduled for the same time.
It seems as if I can't sync my phone to my computer through iTunes and iCloud.

Unless as part of a backup, or stored somewhere else, they are gone.
Your son needs his own Apple ID for iCloud, FaceTime & iMessage. He can continue to use yours for iTunes content, but for everything else, he needs his own.
When you did what you did, as far as iCloud knows, this is the same person with multiple devices, and that's they way things are supposed to work: keep everything in sync.

If your contacts are synced to your computer then they are in the supported app you are syncing with.
When you set up syncing of contacts on your device, which application did you select?

If the contacts are still in Address Book on your computer, but just not on the phone, you can tell iTunes to force replace the contacts on your phone with those from your computer. You can do this by going into the Info tab when your iPhone is connected, and checking the Contacts box under the Advanced section at the bottom of the page.
You may also want to backup your Address Book information as well. It's a good idea to make periodic backups of your contact and calendar information in case information accidentally gets deleted or changed. You can find out how to backup your Address Book data here:

I have deleted the iCloud account under my name on their iPads and replaced with their ones. Apple support said yesterday I needed to click the small 'I' by each name as it came up in the TO box and remove it. After doing rid for each contact under each letter of the alphabet it should remove them from latest contacts. Having done this, although I could not remove groups I had sent, I am not convinced they will not return once I have written a few texts, any ideas?

On the old phone go into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Are there any email accounts listed here? Such as Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc?
If so, tap on each of them and check the 'Contacts' option. If it is turned on, this means that contact syncing is enabled for that account and that your contacts may already be synced to that mail account.
Also check Settings > iCloud and look for the 'Contacts' option. Is it enabled? If so, then it is possible that some contacts could be synced to your iCloud account as well. You can check to see which contacts are in which account by going to the Contacts app on your old phone and pressing the 'Groups' button in the top left corner. You may see several groups here. Uncheck all groups and then check each group one at a time to check and see how many contacts are synced to each account. You may need to add the same mail accounts to your new phone and enable contact syncing to have the contacts from the mail servers sync down to the new phone.
