HT5860 constant beeps like a key is stuck down constantly, made the noise since new

I have a MacBook Air and ever since I have had the computer (6 months) it makes a constant beeping noise like a key is stuck on.  There is no reason for it, it happens at random and I can see no pattern to it. Tonight it happened everytime I opened downloads, this afternoon it was when I open my e-mails, no pattern whatsoever.  Anybody giv me some advice?

Beeps can be an indication there's a problem with the RAM (memory)

  • Shift key is "stuck down"

    So I first had a problem with this over a week ago - when I switched my laptop on it went to a grey screen with the option of me or guest. I clicked on me, but it wouldn't accept my password. I clicked on guest, and got a message about restarting in Safari only mode or something. Tried this a few times but each time it came back to the same screen with the same options.
    Eventually I managed to get on as normal by holding down the right hand command key whilst switching on (doesn't work with the other command key). From there I tried various things and worked out that everything was acting as if I had a shift key held down, and I used the keyboard viewer to work out that it was the right hand shift key causing the problem.Obviously this was why my password wasn't being accepted.
    It corrected itself after a couple of hours but the problem came and went last week. I tried blasting air under the key, thinking there might be something under there, but it didn't have any effect.
    I should mention at this point that I'm from the UK but currently living in Madagascar so though my MacBook is only 8 months old I can't take it anywhere for help.
    My dad called Apple for me who advised to try reinstalling Lion (by holding down CMD + R whilst switching on). I first tried this on Friday afternoon last week but couldn't do it because it required logging in to the app store, and I couldn't type my password in as the shift key was doing it's thing. It stopped doing it a while later, but by that time our internet was down so once again couldn't do it. I used a spare laptop (as I am doing again now) and tried to change my app store password, but it won't let me change it to an all caps password.
    On Monday it became more of a problem - it's now constant rather than intermittant. Also, if I leave it for 5 minutes or so the mouse starts to work normally, but as soon as I type the entire problem returns.
    Last night I left software updates downloading overnight (internet here is sloooooooow) but this morning someone had unplugged my power cable so I assumed they wouldn't have worked. I tried doing a normal switch on and it went to the grey screen, then when I tired switching it off got a message saying there were updates to install. Only took 5 minutes to install these but when I switched on again I still had exactly the same problem. When I tried holding CMD down the grey screen persisted 4 or 5 times, but then decided to work. So I've got it switched on but still have the problem.
    I did a software update again and it says there are still 2 updates which are 1.34GB - which seems weird as yesterday there were 5 updates and it was 1.34GB. I can't try downloading these during the day, would have to leave it overnight again.
    I'm going to try calling Apple from Skype in a couple of hours but just wondered if there's anything else I can try. If they can change my password to all caps I can try reinstalling Lion. This morning we took the key off and cleaned it, but made no difference at all (didn't really expect it to). The only options I've come up with are downloading a key remapping programme to try and disable that shift key, or using an external keyboard - we don't have one here so would have to wait a few weeks for someone to bring one from the UK and I could do with knowing whether this would even work before trying to arrange it.
    Could really do with fixing this as I am not making the best first impression at my new job due to being able to do very little work! I'm not planning to return to the UK until at least November and flights would cost more than buying a new laptop - so some kind of solution is needed!
    So... any thoughts much appreciated. Sorry for the lengthy explanation! Many thanks in advance.

    It should be the simplest of matters to connect an external keyboard -- any USB KB will do -- and see whether it works. If you need to be able to travel with a functional MBP, though, that won't be a very practical workaround.
    I don't know whether the Shift key can be remapped successfully. The fact that it's one of two keys that both have the same function may be a complication: you won't want the left Shift key remapped too.
    The computer doesn't have to go back to the UK for service -- there may be a closer option, and your warranty is good worldwide.

  • Mac acting as if the apple key is stuck down+ pram reset not working

    My Mac pro has started acting as if the apple key is held down! Menus and cursers are all wrong or not working at all. Rebooting cures it for a few hours but sometimes only a few minutes, I've tried swapping keyboards ( twice ) and using diffrent usb sockets without any joy so I'm starting to think it's a system problem. One suggestion I read was to reset the pram but even that won't work. Holding down the command / option / P / R combo at start up doesn't do anything.
    HELP!  PLEASE

    Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some Discs have it inexplicably on Disc #2. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.

  • I'm having problems with my keyboard since the 8.3 update. It's like the keys get stuck, I keep touching the keys, then it adds a period. I tried the soft reset, I turn my phone off every night. Help?

    MY keyboard has been giving me trouble since I updated the iOS 8.3. It stutter stops while I'm texting, if I keep trying to type it may eventually catch up, but also drops a period if I keep hitting the space bar because the cursor isn't moving. Yet another problem with an update. This has been the worst year to own an apple product!

    You mentioned that you tried connecting to other types of routers - was that successful?
    Have you tried resetting your Network settings within your phone?
    I Tried everything you mentioned before, and still havin" the problem, Im gonna try these un-official solutions  --> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4909703?start=240&tstart=0
    Do you think that by upgrading to iOS 7 can solve this problem?

  • Left shift key is stuck down

    My daughters MacBook left shift key is stuckndown.  The computer is constantly on "safe boot".
    What's a mom to do?

    Did you double check to make sure you replaced the shift key correctly?

  • My Apple TV gets stuck on continue at the what's new screen

    Has there been an update that fixes this screen or at least a work around to get past the screen?

    MANY people are reporting they've had to try multiple micro USB cables to find one that works. I got one that worked from a neighbor.
    Some people have also reported they've had to try the Restore process more than once.
    1. Unplug Apple TV and move it to your computer running latest version of iTunes.
    2. Quit iTunes if running.
    3. Plug micro USB cable to the back of the Apple TV.
    4. Power the Apple TV using  the AC cable.
    5. iTunes shoud either launch itself (a good indication that the micro USB cable you're using is compatible), or launch iTunes.
    6. Click Restore. Software will download and install (big file).

  • Sat SP10-804: XP Home thinks Control Key stuck down (XP SP2)

    Satellite SP10-804
    XP home as installed plus SP2
    Occasionally XP thinks that the Ctrl key is stuck down. So it is impossible to log on, Word wants to start in 'Safe Mode' C is always Ctrl-C etc and the only solution I have found so far is a reboot.
    The Ctrl key is not actually stuck down. I have a keyboard utility that indicates when a key (including the ctrl key) is pressed. When this problem is present, the utility does not indicate that the key is pressed.
    So something in Windows has got upset. Right now it is a real pain because I have some serious calculations going on that will take another 8 or 9 hours to finish so I cannot reboot the PC.
    I rather think I must press a combination of keys accidently to cause this problem to happen but I have no idea which keys. Does anyone know
    1) Why this problem occurs
    2) How to fix the problem once it has occurred
    3) How to stop the problem from recurring

    Hi
    I dont know what you mean with Did reinstall. It is really not be easy to say what the problem can be. Maybe some virus or anything else can have influence on to this.
    Unfortunately I have really no answer to this. In my opinion you should back up your data or save all them on second partition if you have one and reinstall the OS using recovery media. Only on this way the unit will be clean preinstalled and you can check if the problem still persists.

  • Enter key to act like tab key in JTable

    I have programmed a JTable application. I want that if I press 'Enter' key in the JTable cell, the cell at right side may be selected after validating input. Similarly, when I press 'Enter' in the right most cell, the first cell of the next row may be selected after validating input.
    In other words, I like 'Enter' key to behave as forward navigational key in JTable cells like 'Tab' key, however, after validating input.
    The following is the piece of code which is not working for me. Though, it changes selection border to the next cell on pressing enter, but the focus is not shifted and editing remains in the current cell.
    //voucherTable is a JTable object with three columns.
    Action moveForward = new AbstractAction() {
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
    int r=voucherTable.getSelectedRow();
    int c=voucherTable.getSelectedColumn();
    if(c==2){
    c=-1;
    r+=1;
    voucherTable.changeSelection(r,c+1,false,false);
    voucherTable.getInputMap().put(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke
    (KeyEvent.VK_ENTER,0),"moveForward");
    voucherTable.getActionMap().put("moveForward",
    moveForward);
    Kindly advise me to solve the problem.
    Thanks.
    Mujjahid

    KeyStroke tab = KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_TAB, 0);
    KeyStroke enter = KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_ENTER, 0);
    InputMap im = table.getInputMap(JTable.WHEN_ANCESTOR_OF_FOCUSED_COMPONENT);
    im.put(enter, im.get(tab));

    Then it's time for a new keyboard.  If you are still under warranty, call AppleCare.

  • Tecra M1: boots to Toshiba splash screen - then constant beep!

    when 'switching on', the Toshiba splash screen appears, then nothing else happens. Any key pressed after that, just makes a constant beep. I purchased the machine from a dealer, 2nd hand (500) with XP Pro pre loaded, all updated etc, everthing worked fine till switching it on yesterday. This is my first laptop, and first time using this forum, 'be gentle please'

    Hi Alan
    I think what Nicky said might not apply to the M1. The trick probably works for Phoenix bios machines, but the M1 has Toshiba BIOS and will only enter the BIOS settings when ESC is pressed at a certain timewindow.
    Back to your problem, you say the Toshiba logo is shown then othing else happens.
    Most common is that the machine stops (but is still listening to keystrokes) when there is a problem to establish contact with the IDE-devices. The devices have a certain amount of time to respond correctly before the BIOS times out and gives you an error message.
    Did you try to leave the machine like this for say 1-2 minutes? Did you look at it the whole time?
    If not, please do. It is possible (although not certain) that you have a problem with either the HDD or optical device. Try removing the optical device from the Selectable bay. Any change to the problem? If yes, then there is either a problem with the optical drive or the IDE channel #1 (number 2 in human language). That means motherboardproblems.
    So to clear it up and summarize: most probably you have a problem with either the HDD or the CD/DVD or the IDE channels on the motherboard.
    The best way to check this is to look at the machine and wait some time and see if there is a timeout error message from the BIOS.
    Good luck
    Tom

  • Mac Book Pro with a separate apple keyboard (wired) randomly the keyboard will make a thudding noise like a key is depressed and then freezes

    Hi I'm using a Mac Book Pro with a separate apple keyboard (wired).  Randomly the keyboard will make a thudding noise like a key is depressed and stuck (which it isn't) which then stops when the keyboard is unplugged.  I've tried rebooting, plugging it into another port and unplugging  my mouse from it and it hasn't solved the issue.  I also can't pin point when it does it, it seems to be random so sometimes, like now it's fine and then others it does it every few minutes.  I'm reluctant to throw the keyboard out if there is a chance it can be fixed.  Any ideas?

    You cannot use any additional devices on the keyboard's USB ports when used in this fashion (except perhaps ONE low power Apple mouse). Anything more draws too much power and may make the keyboard malfunction. In general, keyboards do not tend to complain about low power, they just stop working properly.

  • My Ipad is delete key is stuck

    my ipad seems like the delete key is stuck.  When every try to type any text, it just deletes it.  The cursor keeps on blinking.
    If I reposition the cursor further down in an existing document, then it starts deleting the document from there backwards.  What's the problem?

    Restart your iPad. Press and hold the sleep/wake button until you see the red slider then swipe to power off. Then press and hold the sleep / wake button until you see the Apple logo.

  • Keys getting stuck (not physically)

    Hi,
    Today I realized that my ctrl key gets stuck. If I try and press ctrl + 1 nothing happens, but if I after that press just 1 it behaves as i pressed ctrl + 1 and it won't stop behaving like that until I press just ctrl to "deactivate" it.
    The only way to solve it temporarily is to restart the computer
    This started after the following changes to the computer was done:
    Used the software updater (not used since buying the computer in may/june or so)
    Installed USB Overdrive
    Installed WoW
    Any ideas on how this could be solved?

    Try resetting the SMC and if that doesn't handle it try resetting the PRAM. Here are instructions if you aren't familiar with these:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected. Disconnect all peripherals.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

    My handset is Nokia 5800XM, firmware version 31. If I screen any contact or a group of contact in profile for not ringing or if I press silent key while calling a person, there is a BEEP like sound after disconnecting/end of silent ringing. That means I have to heard a sound/BEEP which I do not want to hear in silent mode/ or call screening. How can I prevent this? Do you have any idea? Please help me. Thanks in advance.

    Go to profiles>Silent>Personalize and check if the warning tones and Keypad tones are set to off.
