I am trying to watch netflix. i have not been able to do so since the 1st ios update. now whtn updating the 2nd update ios7.0.2 now says update failed an error occured downloading ios 7.0.2. How in the heck do i fix it and be able to watch my netflix?

This would almost certainly be a setting that is being enforced by your company. You'll need to talk to them about this.

Start with your finger at the bottom of the screen (about even with the home button) and swipe in an upward motion. There should be a row of icons at the top of a grey field. if the quarter-moon icon is bright white, tap it. If it was (and still is) dark, take the iPhone in to be evaluated by a qualified technician.

If the airline doesn't offer WiFi (or doesn't allow streaming over the WiFi they offer), then you can't. You'll need to rent or purchase a movie from another source so that you can download it onto your device ahead of time.

If not, what happens if you remove the Apple ID on the iPad and then set it in Airplane Mode (allow a couple of minutes at this point) followed by re-adding the Apple ID ?
What, if any error messages are appearing on the Mac when you try to launch the App or Login to the iMessages server ?
Is the Apple ID linked to an iCloud account ?
In Messages 7 (Mountain Lion) this did not seem to be important but it seems it is in Mavericks/Messages 8

I have done several "attempted downloads, and see the full file download, typically taking 30 minutes to complete, and then something goes wrong.
I am happy to suspend AV and FW software, but would like to know if it is a good fix or not first?

As far as I know there is no US cell carrier that allows pay as you go with an iPhone. You can purchase an unlocked iPhone 4S at an Apple Store and try it with a non-supported carrier.

If you are having problems downloading the apps that you bought, you will need to explain the issue in detail if you wish someone to help you.

I tried the suggested procedures. Took out cartridges, replaced them in proper order. Shut off machine. Unplugged machine for more than 10 minutes.
After plugging in machine & turning on, the same error message appeared. It is constant and the machine will not perform in any way including for scanning.
The suggested procedure did not eliminate the error. Your message suggested I go through the "contact us" screen but I've done that twice already.
Not willing to play that dumb game again.

May be your carrier but try a reset:
Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears

If you changed your Apple ID, you will not be able to update any of the content that you used in the past. The worse case scenario here would have been to change the password. Really all you needed to do was go on the Apple site and change the password, unless you provided them with information. This will make it difficult for you to deal with turning off Find My iPhone and other Apple ID related steps. All you really needed to do was delete the email.
