My son registered a gift card he received for $15 on my itunes account. He wants to use this money to make in-app purchases for one of his games. He was purchasing coins or something, but the process went to my account, but didn't take money from the balance of the card. I am guessing I need to change a setting, but it didn't give an option to do so. How do I go about using the gift card? The balance shows on my computer when the account is open, so I know he did it correctly, we just don't know how to spend it!

No, in-app purchase can only be done using the app.

I don't believe Apple is setup for tax exempt purchases. It's strictly comsumer oriented.
Are you making a profit on your book sale? If so just up the price to cover the tax and you purchase it and deliver to the school. If not then reimburse the school for the tax and write it off as a deduction.

What happens when you try to do an in-app purchase, does the 'buy' button not work, do you get any error messages ...

No idea, but it seems like you should be able to. You can give it a try, but will have to figure out some way around the automatic 1-click ordering that the App Store now does by default.

I run all my apps through configurator at my school. I have set it up to allow in-app purchasing. I figured I would just add an itunes gift card and do the in-app purchase. I tried to add the gift card via the iPad but it won't let me sign in to iTunes. I was thinking about going to itunes store on the computer and redeem it there but wanted to see if anyone else had tried that before - I would hate to lose my money.

In app purchases payment type - gift card, loaded in itunes but not found in app

So I just bought two $50 gift cards and loaded successfully. But when trying to purchase in-app, it wont accept payment type (credit card is maxed, hence the gift card in the first place). And so I changed the payment type to "none" in settings, but now it says insufficient funds. How do I spend the gift card monies in the app ?

Charged twice for an In App purchase - debited from gift card balance and credit card.

A couple of days ago, I redeemed a gift card to my account. My son bought an in app purchase - and it has deducted the amount from both my Visa card and from the balance of the gift card.
Can anyone advise how a) I prevent this happening again and b) who I contact for a refund?

Click here and ask the iTunes Store staff for a refund. You can also contact the credit card's issuer and dispute it.

How can I pay my auto renewal without using my gift card balance

My auto renewal is up in about 2 weeks. However, I don't want it to pull from my current gift card balance. Is there a way to pay for it seperately?

Unfortunately no. About the only thing to do is buy another gift card for the service amount and redeem that.
