HT6027 What the heck is switch control for and why would I use it?

This doesn't begin to explain what this function is or why I would want to use it. What would it do for me exactly? "Switch Control helps you navigate your Mac using switches to enter text, interact with various items on the screen, play games, and ..."

Switch Control is a feature that enables users with fine motor impairments to access their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad through the use of one or more switches. Switch Control highlights items and item groups one by one on the device screen. To make a selection, the user activates a switch when the desired item or item group is highlighted.

  • What does the "i" in "iPod" stand for and why is lowercase?

What does the "i" in "iPod" stand for and why is it lowercase?

I dont know, I think that was pretty funny.
The i first appeared as a prefix for the iMac. As this was the first one to be equipped with the internet it's a pretty safe bet to assume that it stood for 'internet'.
After that it became a bit of a signature for apple and a kind of unofficial trademark and gets used on everything cos apple think it looks trendy.
Although to be fair the iPod does play tunes that you download using the internet, so there is a link i suppose.
I think this is right but will no doubt get some Mac nerd disagreeing.

  • What the heck is a "Kernal panic" and how can I fix this?

Lately, several of my partitions (external firewire) running OS 10.3.9 have crashed and are no longer bootable. one partition crashed upon being turned on, and said that there was 'no driver for powerbook 6, 5' and 'kernal stopping here...' I started up from a different partition, and installed the latest security update, and that repaired my kernal, but now for some reason, I am not an 'administrator,' but I am the only user of this computer. any suggestions?
someone had this happen in class, and I found out that the problem that I was experiencing was called a 'kernal panic,' and now I want to know why this happens, how to prevent this from happening, and the best software tool to check the health of my system folder. anyone got any suggestions?
I'm considering installing a clean version of OS 10.3.3, and updating to 10.3.9, but if there is a faster way to fix this, then I'm all ears! thanks!

    Patddfan:
From your description of what is happening it does not sound like a kernel panic. See What’s a kernel panic. In terms of what to do see: Resolving Kernel Panics
I suspect that your HDD is in serious need of maintenance. Here's what I would do:
    1. Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. In the left panel select your HDD (manufacturer ID), and in the main panel select the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    2. Boot from your install disk. Go to the Installer menu and launch Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left panel and First Aid in main panel. Click Repair Disk. If DU reports disk needs no repair quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors, click Repair again, and again until DU reports the disk is repaired. If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    3. Download MacJanitor and run all the procedures, the follow regular schedule.
    4. Take a look at Gulliver's article Mac OS X System Maintenance and implement procedures.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • HT4859 What and where is the Camera Roll that Apple keeps referring to?  What is it for?  How and why would I use it?

    I haven't a clue.  I asked the question.

Thanks.  I understand the initial concept that pictures I take are not on my device but on the camera roll.  Or in your language, they are on the device.  But after talking with able it seems I can roll the pictures around, from all the strange places that pictures might be sent to and returned from, including to the camera roll.  So at the moment i figure that it is a place where I can save pictures, return pictures, and save pictures.  Not albums, not photo stream, not recently recovered, not recently downloaded, just llike a camera, but I understand that I can return pictures to the camera if I want to save them or show them to anyone if my device is off line.  Thanks for trying to help.  It's way beyond my ken.

  • UGH, What the heck did I do wrong and how do I fix it?

Okay, so here is the background information you may need:
    1) One laptop
    2) Two iPods (Touch and Classic)
    3) Had all my Classic info (songs, video's, etc)
    4) Got a Touch
    5) Tried to sync with iTunes
    6) User error occurred and have lost all info from Classic
    7) Husband tried to fix it (by going into My music on Windows and restoring, but it's all the Touch information and no Classic)
    8) He said you're screwed
Help? Before you chastise me, I've heard the lecture of backing up my stuff from now on three times today. Is there a way to recoup my Classic information? Thank you so much in advance for your help.

    *Recover media from iPod*
See this post from Zevoneer for options on moving your iPod data back to your computer.

Some of the tools linked to will only work if the iPod has a valid (non-empty) library which yours hasn't got. Others can scan the drive independently and some may even be able to rebuild a damaged library. The manual method towards the end should be able to recover your media regardless of the state of the library, provided the media hasn't actually been deleted from the drive yet. If it has then you need to find a free file & folder undelete tool first...

  • What the heck is up with my macbook pro

I just got it back from being repaired by apple because my mbp would not charge. It came back from the repairs with full battery life so i have been using that and now im down to 15 % and i go to plug it in and it won't charge. The charger is brand new as my other one melted and had to be replaced. The computer was just "fixed". brand new charger and supposedly repaired macbook pro that won't charge. any ideas as to what the heck is wrong with it, and will apple keep sending it back for repairs or will they give me a new one?

well it turned out it wasn't the computer, the charger that i had when i received my repaired laptop had been shorted out somehow when i plugged into the laptop before i had it repaired, so apple gave me another charger and it's all good now

  • Ubd activity - what is it, and why is it using 87% of my processors, and killing my battery?

I have only seen two threads that have the term ubd and battery.  I've shut off my bluetooth, my wifi, and all of my apps, and ubd still fluctuates between 7% and 87% with no explanation.  I have a new MPB (non-retina), and my battery lasts perhaps 1 hour doing emails and internet.  I can't go unplugged at all and expect to do photoshop or any other processor-intensive app.  I'm on 10.8.3, and I've got 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB 7200RPM internal hard drive.  My wife's 13" mbp is 3 years old, and she is on 10.7, and she gets 4 hours of usage in lightroom and photoshop, so what the heck is going on?
Also, I don't use antivirus or other firewall apps, in case you're wondering.  I like to keep background stuff to a minimum.
It would be great if the mac support folks could chime in, and thanks in advance for anyone who might be able to help.
    Thanks!

  • HT1947 "Up next" feature makes a mess out of controlling what the heck is played using the iOS remote app.

Tell me if I am wrong, but it seems to me that the "Up next" feature makes a mess out of controlling what the heck is played through the Apple TV using the iOS remote app.  The whole thing seem uber-anti-intuitive.  I am a long time user (as much and anyone is long time for any of this stuff) of the iOS remote app, and ATV to play music though a stereo system.  Up to a couple of weeks ago, I could sit in my chair, start the iPhone remote app, pick a playlist and either start from the beginning, or if the first track didn't grab me at that moment, go ahead and switch to, say, track 6 -- the whole playlist would "sit there" and be available for further browsing.  With the new system, if I hit a playlist the songs will go into "Up Next".  If as I described in the last sentence, the first song is not getting it for me, and I switch to track 6 , the "Up Next" list is lopped off and only tracks 7 onward will be shown.  I can't go back and browse the first 5 tracks (6 actually) -- they're vaporized.  The idea of browsing your own music has been killed; I guess this "Up Next" concept is for folks who like maybe a couple of dozen songs that are picked from different places and want to play them in different orders of something -- it just seems like a crummy idea.  If under the scenario I described I want to go back and play that first (or second through fifth) song on the original playlist, I have to go out and fish it out of the library somehow and just keep messing around and around.  There have been times when I didn't know what the heck was going to come out of the speakers.  It seems like the remote user has not been considered in the "dramatically improved" iTunes 11", with the "cleaner user interface" .  To me it is "dramatically akin to dog-doo", which, of course is not cleaner than much of anything.  If I can't get this working decently, then I'm really thinking of investigating some other type of system like DLNA.  Any suggestions?

Same problem here.  I have so many problems with this remote app.  Is there an iTunes API? I would like to write my own remote app that actually works.

OK... so now I can pin a tab so it will always be there... so what the heck happen to all my tabs that were pinned? Worked fine for awhile so now what...???????

App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data [1] in the file sessionstore.js [2] in the Firefox profile folder [3].
Make sure that you do not use "Clear Recent History" to clear the "Browsing History" when Firefox is closed because that prevails and prevents Firefox from opening tabs from the previous session.

It is also possible to use:
    * [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences Firefox/Tools > Options] > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"
If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then make sure that Session is unchecked in the settings for the Firefox application.

  • What happened to the pull down picture control for desktop pictures?

What happened to the pull down picture control for desktop pictures? Today as I was changing my desktop picture I saw the control that allows you to adjust the picture vannish!
Where did it go and how do I get it back?

Solved my own problem. From the finder I opened a picture that I wanted to use for my desktop with Firefox and from there I opened the Desktop and Screensaver preferences and the missing pulldown was back.
My theory of the problem is that I had selected the "Change Picture" box and that eliminated the picture adjustment pull-down menu and it didn't come back after deselecting the "Change Picture" box.

  • Since I signed up for iTunes match, I've got about 150 songs that I never bought, or want. Also, I am missing a bunch of songs that I used to have on my computer. What the heck happened?

Since I signed up for iTunes match, I've got about 150 songs that I Never bought, or want. Also, I'm missing a bunch of songs that I had on my computer before iTunes match. What the heck happened?

No, I'm the only one with access to my computer. I deleted all the unwanted songs and I hope they stay deleted. I found all my original songs in another folder. How they got there, I'll never know. It took a while, but I got all my songs back in the iTunes music library where they were before I got tangled up in this iTunes Match boondoggle. Apple has a ways to go before I'll mess with it again. By the way, you have to watch out for sisters.

  • I was using my old iPhone 4 as an iPod for 4  months when one day I got this error message saying "phone is deactivated visit your local to reactive" ... what the heck??? now the freakin thing won't even charge!!!

I was using my old iPhone 4 as an iPod for 4  months when one day I got this error message saying "phone is deactivated visit your local to reactive" ... what the heck??? now the freakin thing won't even charge!!!

Nope. I've already turned off cellular data. It happens regardless, as soon as it is done powering on.
I suspect it might just be built into the phone's firmware to do that... and I have to hit "ignore" whenever it happens, but I just wanted confirmation of that...

I didn't even have time to cancel the preorder as that processed a couple minutes before the bundle was posted.
Pre-orders are apparently not worth my time ever again.

    Go here:
