HT6093 Thunderbolt Display Update fail

I continue to get notices of a Thunderbolt Display update but it fails each time before loading. What should I do?

Same.
I have three thunderbolt displays connected to a Mac Pro. I got the error message, then read that no more than two displays could be connected during the update. I disconnected one of them and restarted. Then connected the other and disconnected the first and restarted again.
I'm not sure any of that worked and have no "active" notification that they were updated. I checked the firmware version following that update per the instructions and they match the version, but I'm still getting the random flicker.

• Thunderbolt display update 1.2 causes unresponsive display

After running the thunderbolt display update 1.2 my display now displays the very thing the update was designed was supposed to correct - a black unresponsive screen (which I have ironically never suffered fro at all ever - grrrr).
I cannot get the thunderbolt display to come back to life although the mac can see it and thinks it is there and is extending the desktop to it.
Anyone else have this issue or ideas to solve?

..and solved. The secret seemed to be to follow these steps. Have no idea if they are all necessary but it worked for me.
In Display preferences hit gather window to bring the thunderbolt display preferences onto the mac screen
Uncheck Adjust brightness automatically and save
disconnect the display from the mac.
Restart the mac
Power down the display and leave for a few minutes
Power up the display
Reconnect the display to the mac
The screen returned to life. Let's see if it stays that way, I will report if it doesn't.

• Stuck on White Screen on Thunderbolt Display Update - Lion

Anyone else have this problem? After the Thunderbolt display update, I get a white screen at the login after I restart my MacBook Pro. I either have to unplug my laptop so I can see the screen again to login, or I can hit enter and then blindly put in my password while he screen is blank and then it will pop back up again. It's annoying.
I didn't have this problem running Snow Leopard and I reset the PRAM and SMC already. This is also a clean install of Lion.

I've actually just posted a similar post on the Thunderbolt thread. Is there anyway to rollback the firmware? This is so frutrating to have to wait so long before actually getting to the login screen.
If the Thunderbold display is unplugged then the MacBook has no problems and instantly goes into the login screen - on the other hand having the Thunderbolt display connected to the MacBook - same as you describe - Power on Macbook - white screen for about 1-3 minutes before the Apple logo appears and proceeds to the login screen
Hope someone can read and sort thins out soon.

• Thunderbolt firmware update failed!

My config: Early 2011 MB Pro 13" 2.7 GHz i7 / OSX 10.7.1 Build 11B26
Last week I installed "Thunderbold Firmware Update version 1.0" on my brand new MB Pro.
It was connected to power, the update started, rebooted and showed the progress dialog while installing. So far so good. Almost at 100%, the progressbar stoped moving for at least an hour!!
At that point i discovered that a mobile HD was still connected to my MB (stupid off course during FW updates) and I disconnected it in the hope it would solve the pause. I waited again for at least half an hour and finally decided (was forced, against all advise) to reboot my MB.
The next boot, was a scary one :-). While everything seemed to work at first glace, I discoverd that my external displays did not work anymore. When using my minidisplay->VGA converter, no displays are detected. When using my minidisplay->HDMI displays are detected but giving "no signal". I've tried at three diverent screens that are all working on my (older) mac mini using the same adapters + cables.
Anybody experienced the same problem so far? I called with Apple Care but they "only" could advise me the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM resets. None of them helped. I also tried to install the thunderbolt fw-update by hand but a "Your computer's thunderbold port does not need this update" message is shown. The software updater shows that the system is fully up to date.
When looking at my system report the following is shown for my thunderbolt:
====
MacBook Pro:
Vendor Name: Apple, Inc.
Device Name: MacBook Pro
UID: 0x0001000A1B402220
Firmware Version: 22.1
Port:
Status: No devices connected
Link Status: 7
Port Micro Firmware Version: FFFF.FF.FF
====
The FFFF.FF.FF worries me a bit. Anyone knows what is shown after a successful update? Any known tricks maybe to force the FW-update again or skip back to the previous version?
I desperately need my external big screen again for software-dev.
Thanks in advance.
Kind regards, David (Netherlands)

I did it on my 2011 MBPro on Aug. 24.
It normally causes no problems to run a FW update if you check first, that there are NO external devices connected during FW update and the charger is connected and powered.
If it fails under this circumstances, it's mostly a hardware fault causing that. For that do it while your system is still under warranty.
Anyway, you can also try to roll back a failed firmware update.
See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
Sooner or later you must have it as a precondition for a upgrade or to get different hardware to work.
Note also that the next Thunderbolt FW update is rolled out now.

• Thunderbolt Ethernet update fail to boot?

Curious if anyone else applied todays updates to Thunderbolt and are now frozen at the gray boot screen with the apple logo and swirly circle?
I'm on an early 2011 MBP running Lion with all the latest patches/software except for the Thunderbolt update. The laptop has an SSD with whole disk encryption enabled.
I installed the patch, came back a few minutes later, there was an error saying it wasn't able to apply it.. and the machine was frozen at that point, nothin else to do. I hard rebooted, and it's in thise frozen state since.
Safe boot does not boot.
Clearing PRAM does not help.
Booting safe with verbose (shift-command-v after apple boot tone) ends with:
AppleThunderboltNHI::enablePower - turn power off, status = 0x0, result_value = 0x0
Have let it sit for 45 minutes and no change in the logs.
There is a mention a few lines prior about IOKit framework not loading due to "image not found", but unclear if that's related at all. 3 lines prior Thunderbolt mention it also says "The System bootstrapper has crashed: Trace/BPT trap: 5

The new adapter is only compatible with MacBook Air with Thunderbolt (mid-2011 onwards) and the new Retina MacBook Pro, so why have you all installed the update on your MBPs?
See Compatibility section: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD463ZM/A
I've installed the update on my mid-2011 13" MBA and have had no problems at all.
Because it came up in Software Update, so we all assumed it applied to our version of OS X running on our hardware platform - nowhere did it say that it only applied to MBAs and new MBPs. If you're right about that, and I dare say you are, then I guess there's an erroneous record in an Apple database somewhere that says also apply it to systems that are not supported and that it shouldn't be applied to.

• Thunderbolt display update

No matter how many times I accept this update it comes back. What is wrong?

Failure of a firmware update can be caused by some Thunderbolt or FireWire peripherals. Disconnect all such devices and try again.

• MacBook Pro fans running when plugged into Thunderbolt displays

I just got a sweet setup at work - a new MacBook Pro and 2 Thunderbolt displays. However, immediately upon setup I noticed the fans on the Mac Book operating constantly, even when I was just surfing the net or working in one Microsoft program.
I just spent a few hours working on the laptop - not plugged in to the Thunderbolt displays - and the fans did not go on at all. Within minutes of plugging it in to the displays, the fans started up again. So I think it may have something to do with the Mac Book being plugged into the Thunderbolt displays.
Can anyone help?
Mac Book Pro, Version 10.7.2, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Hello,
I'm so sorry for the slow response! I ended up calling Apple because I was still mystified and no one was responding here.
The nice gentleman at Apple told me the following. The MacBook Pro can handle two Thunderbolts max. If the CPU is constantly running hot, then it could be an issue in the long term.
We went through the software update process for the Thunderbolt displays again, and it turns out that the software was NOT updating!!! It's not the usual "click install and the computer takes care of it all" sort of update - unfortunately I don't remember exactly what we did, but you have to go to the Applications folder and actually install something.
You'll know if you haven't followed these steps if, when you go back to check for updates, the Thunderbolt display update keeps popping up.
Since installing that firmware update, I have been using my MacBook with only one display. In the next week, I will probably plug it in to the second display and see if there are fan issues. If so, then Apple told me to call them back and see about further troubleshooting.
I hope this was somewhat helpful. If you are still unclear, I'd say call Apple! They were really helpful! Good luck!

• Thunderbolt Display firmware update 1.2 failed

Thunderbolt Display firmware update 1.2 fails to complete. I have made four attempts to load this software update. The odd thing is that the software list shows that the update has been installed. But every time I check for updates, Thunderbolt Display firmware 1.2 is listed as a needed update.

Strange. The downloaded dmg file package said that the upgrade was successfully installed, but the App Store still says I need to update. I haven't tried it with my MBP cover open but I'll give that a shot.

• HT6093 Updating two Thunderbolt display firmwares

I have two Thunderbolt displays, one at work and one at home. I updated the firmware of the work one, and want to update the firmware of the home one.
With the Macbook Air clamshell open and the display plugged in, the App Store at home says that the update has already been applied.
Suggestions?

Yes, the firmware is the old firmware, because the update never ran on the home display.

• Thunderbolt display firmware update 1.2 won't install correctly

On Friday 11/13/2014, I received a Software Update notification in OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 that there was an update available for "Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2". I tried installing this several times, but every time it tells me "The Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update could not complete." Now I have 6 failed install attempts showing in Software Update, plus still the still to be installed update itself.
If I click on the "More info" button in the failed installation message, it takes me to this page: About Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2 - Apple Support
On that page it suggest to check the "About this Mac" info for Thunderbolt Display, where "The Firmware Version should be 26.2 and the Port Micro Firmware Version should be 2.0.7 after the update."
My Thunderbolt Display is currently on Firmware Version 22.2, with Port Micro Firmware Version 0.0.21. Why won't this update install?

I had a similar problem: The "Thunderbolt display firmware update 1.2" kept reappearing in AppStore, even though the uppdate seemed successful.
According to Apple[1] the update was successful when the the Firmware Version is 26.2 and the Port Micro Firmware Version is 2.0.7 (visible in About this Mac -> SystemReport).
Above versions were correct in my case, but the update still kept appering in AppStore... (probably I did download and install the update manually after the first failure, but I don't remember ...)
To get rid of the annoying update in AppStore I used the softwareupdate command[2] on the commandline:
softwareupdate --ignore TBdisplayFWUpdate1.2

• Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) and two thunderbolt displays. I recently started getting notified there was an update available, Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2 and App Store kept prompting me to download and install.
I tried multiple times, and each time it states it failed to update. According to this KB article About Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update 1.2 - Apple Support it states Firmware Version should be 26.2 and the Port Micro Firmware Version should be 2.0.7 after the update.
I checked and my Mac is in fact reporting the updates were applied. See information from the system report below. I am prompted every day, multiple times to download and apply this update again, over and over. I don't understand why.
I contacted Apple Support and the rep I worked with was pretty much useless. In fact, I am fairly sure I know more and *NIX than he does. Anyway, does anyone have a suggestion on howe to remedy this?

• 27 inch thunderbolt display blacks out after Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2

Bought 2 new 27 inch TB displays for two different machines and after a couple of days the Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2 appears on my Mac Pro with one of the displays installed. So I install the firmware update. Now my display blacks out periodically and I keep getting Graphic Display Errors with a request to sent the errors to Apple. Running a 32 GB Mac Pro (late 2013 circular style) I have three monitors connected (two 20 inch cinema displays and the new 27 inch display). This machine is supposed to be able to handle three 4k monitors or 6 standard TB displays. I've seen the posts about the blacking out with this monitor but I didn't have any problems before the firmware update and now I've got them pretty regularly. I had the blacking out problem on an earlier monitor and took one of the monitors back and Apple gave me another one and this is the replacement. Same problem, but this one only started after the update. I'm hoping someone from Apple reads these messages and can let me know what's up.
BTW, I also have an older 27 inch Apple monitor that ran perfectly on this machine so I'm disappointed that I spent all this money and now get the blacking out issue.
Mac Pro (Late 2013)
Processor 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
Memory 32 BG
Graphics AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB

I have my Thunderbolt display connected to my MacBook Pro and have been experiencing the same issue, getting worse over time. The folks at my local Apple store did not know what to do about it. So, I looked around and tried different thing.
The one thing that seems to be working is to System Preferences > Build-in Display > uncheck “Automatically adjust brightness.”
I hope this helps.
