My OS is 10.4.11 can I update to Maverick ?

If would depend on which Mac you have. If your Mac is capable of running Mavericks, then you would have to upgrade to 10.6.8 first. See OS X Mavericks: System Requirements

Your MBP qualifies for the upgrade to OS X Mavericks.
It would be very prudent and highly advisable that you create a viable backup of your entire system and all your important data before embarking on a major systems upgrade.
Backup your entire system using an externally connected hard drive using a data cloning app such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to create an identical and bootable  copy (clone) of your entire Mac's system to an external hard drive.
This needs to be done in the event something unforeseen goes bad with the install or you simply do not like the new OS.
Failure to backup means a much more tedious, longer and arduous task and process to restore your Mac to its previous system and health if you decide there are too many issues that may or may not occur during the install or during general operation.
    Good Luck!

  • Can't update to Maverick when everything is updated

I just updated to Snow Leopard but, can't update to Maverick.  I got my macbook in May of 2008.  I have the space on my hard drive for the update so I'm not sure what else to look for in my computer to make sure it's ready for the update.  I double checked for more softward updates for my computer after the Snow Leopard installation and updated whatever that was suggested to me.  That still didn't allow me to get Maverick to install.

I just found that it was in my launchpad (little rocket icon on dock) on page 2 (who knew there were more pages!) and it was paused.  Problem solved!

  • Have a MBP mid 2009, had mavericks, changed hard drive and now have 10.6.8 and can't update to mavericks again. Any help?

    Hi,
I Have a MBP mid 2009, 8 Gb RAM, had mavericks, changed hard drive to get more space (500Gb) and couldn't restart from time machine so had to install Snow Leopard, now have OS 10.6.8 and can't update to mavericks again. Any help?

You did not contact us. This is just a user to user forum where we try to help each other out. No one here works for Apple and as far as we know Apple do not even come here. Ring back the number you originally called on and ask for an explanation.

  • I have a MacBook Air 11" OS MAC X 10.7.5 can I update to Maverick?

I purchased a MacBook AIr Nov. 2011 11" and current OS X 10.7.5.  I read that I needed to update to Snow Leopard before I can update to Maverick, just got the upgrade disk and now says I can't do it without another update so I am frustrated.  When researching everything indicated I could use Maverick as long as I did the "simpe" Snow Lion upgrade.  Help!  I also have a Ipad 3, iPhone 5 and an iPad Mini purchased in Jan 2013

Whatever you read was incorrect. You can upgrade directly to Mavericks. It is in the App Store and is free.
Snow Leopard predates the operating system you already have. That's the reason it will not install on your MacBook Air. You spent $20 needlessly for it, but it's yours to resell if you wish.

  • Can I update to Mavericks and keep GarageBand 5.1?

I'm hoping to update to Mavericks (I'm currently at version 10.6.8) so I can also update Final Cut Pro X to the newest version. I need to work on a project from home since the office is closed due to rough weather.
However, I'm afraid in doing so that I will lose GarageBand 5.1 and tons and tons of projects started. I know that I can download 5.1 (here: GarageBand 5.1), but I don't know if it will work properly within Mavericks. I also don't even know if Mavericks will automatically update GarageBand? I'm pretty clueless, so any help would be much appreciated!

Unless you downloaded the full Mavericks installer from the Mac App Store before Yosemite came out, it's no longer available. The updaters you found aren't it.
    Your Mac can run Yosemite.

Disconnect all external devices except the mouse and keyboard then restaert your Mac and see if you can update your software.
If that doesn't help, reindex Spotlight. Instructions here >  Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes
    Then try again.
If that doesn't help, uninstall Remote Buddy >   http://www.iospirit.com/support/faqs/remotebuddy/category/6/General/entry/188/Ho w-do-I-uninstall-Remote-Buddy/

  • How can I update to Mavericks from 10.7.5?

I am running 10.7.5 on an iMac 3.06 Intel. I have downloaded the dmg for 10.9.5 (from three different locations), and the install won't proceed. It stops and I get a message that says I need 10.9 before I can install. I would rather not try Yosemite just yet, because I'm reading scary things. Not even sure I'd be able to do Yosemite either-
    Thanks in advance!

Unless you downloaded the full Mavericks installer from the Mac App Store before Yosemite came out, it's no longer available. The updaters you found aren't it.
    Your Mac can run Yosemite.

  • HT1229 With iphoto version 7.1.5 can I  update to Mavericks or Yosemite without losing photos?

I have OS X 10.8.6 Snow Leopard and want to update to Mavericks or Yosemite, but I have heard that many have had problems with iphoto in doing so. I have a particularly old version of iphoto (2008) and do not want to lose my photos of which there are relatively few--about 80.
Does putting the photos on disk ahead of time get around the issue of saving them before doing any upgrade?

If you want to continue to use iPhoto after upgrading to Yosemite buy an upgrade to iPhoto 9.6, once you have installed Yosemite. Then run the iPhoto Library Upgrader. see:  iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
If you do not want to keep using iPhoto, since your library is not large, export your photos from iPhoto to a folder on your Desktop, before you upgrade:
Select all photos in iPhoto and use "File > Export".
Don't upgrade to a new system without making a full backup of your computer.  You will need this backup, if you want to revert to your original system.  Before upgrading from Snow Leopard to Yosemite check all your important applications and device drivers, if they are Intel versions or universal versions. The newer MacOS X versions since Lion  do no longer support the Roseta environment, that is required to run Power PC  apps. If you do not upgrade these older apps while still running Snowleopard, you may not be able to upgrade them at all.  See this User Tip:
Classic, Rosetta, and 32/64 bit revisited.

  • Can't update to Mavericks, says my hard drive is backup

When trying to update to Mavericks, the system won't do it and only says that the selected drive is used for time machine backups. This is my hard drive, and I don't use it for time machine backups.

You have got the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive, and this is the folder used by Time Machine to create backups. Because of that, the OS X Mavericks installer thinks your hard drive is being used by Time Machine.
To fix this, you need to remove the folder:
    1. Open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
    2. Delete "Backups.backupdb", and if there was nothing in it, empty the Trash.
    3. Run the Mavericks installer and follow the steps

  • I'm working mostly with CS6 Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and Acrobat Pro X. Can I update from 10.6.8 to Mavericks without any problems?

Can I update to Mavericks without any problems for CS6 Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and Acrobat Pro X?

I can't guarantee it, but I think it's very likely you'll have no problems. Mavericks is now up to 10.9.3, and it's extremely stable.

  • My MacBook Pro is still running the OS X 10.5.8, can I install the Mavericks directly? Or could you advise which latest system is able to be installed for my notebook?

Hello, my MacBook Pro is still running the OS X 10.5.8, can I install the Mavericks directly? Or could you advise which latest system is able to be installed for my notebook?

First up, we don't know what kind of MacBook you have so we can't tell you what OS you can run.  You can use this instruction to identify which MacBook model you have:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1635.  Alternatively, from the Apple menu open "About this Mac".  From the window that pops up, click "More Info".  This will open the system profiler.  Click "Hardware" and locate the model identifier, there.
Next, you need to determine if your system can even run Mavericks before you can go about installing it.  These are the requirements:
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
Lastly, as you'll note from the above, you can't update to Mavericks (or Mountain Lion or Lion) from 10.5.8.  Mavericks is only available in the App Store.  You need to be running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) in order to download and install any OS from Lion (10.7) and up.  You can buy Snow Leopard here:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

  • I have older iMac.  No longer getting security updates.  Can't upgrade to Maverick.  Do I need anti-virus software?

Hi.  I am not very computer literate so bear with me.  I have an old iMac:
    iMac 8, 1
10.6.8, think I installed Snow Leopard
2.4 gz, Intel Cored 2 Duo
    1GB, 800 mhz ddr 2 sdram
I no longer get security updates from Apple.  Can't update to Maverick because I don't have enough memory.  Bought my Mac in part because of no need for antivirus software but have been told I need it now.  Is this true?  Do I just pick something to download or install?  Is there something appropriate at the Apple Store?

If you have an iMac model 8.1, you can upgrade as far as Mavericks if you upgrade your RAM. I have the same model, with RAM upgraded to 6 GB and Mavericks does fine.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

I kept a Snow Leopard partition for older games and so forth, but mainly use Mavericks.
